What we do

The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) supports a strong research enterprise that’s recognized worldwide for innovative discoveries that improve health and save lives.

We invite like-minded organizations to join us in co-funding initiatives to build BC’s health research capacity. Together, we can help make a difference in the lives of British Columbians through health research.

What is theMichael Smith Foundationfor Health Research

MSFHR is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Michael Smith, a pre-eminent BC scientist with a long- standing commitment to support researchers throughout their careers.

MSFHR works with the BC Ministry of Health and other partners on initiatives designed to target gaps in health research, evaluation and learning. We tackle specific health system problems identified by health-care practitioners and decision-makers and work with these groups to improve care for British Columbians.

MSFHR Scholar Awards attract and foster the development of outstanding health researchers in BC. Our scholar awards allow researchers to initiate an independent research career, build a leading research program, make significant contributions to their field of research and attract additional funding to advance knowledge on the full range of critical health issues. An MSFHR Scholar Award provides up to eight years of salary support.

Since 2001, we have granted 341 scholar awards worth nearly $110 million.

MSFHR Trainee Awards support highly qualified masters, PhD and post-doctoral trainees as they prepare for careers as independent health researchers. While “training on the job,” these exceptional students significantly increase the productivity of the research programs with which they are affiliated. By funding their training, BC is well positioned to retain them as future leaders in health research. All awards consist of an annual stipend and a research and travel allowance.

Since 2001, we have granted 1,153 trainee awards worth nearly $38 million.

Individual research awards

As BC’s health research agency, MSFHR is well placed to help close the significant gaps that exist between what is known to improve health and what is done to improve health. We do this through knowledge translation — the process of partnering with the health research community to use health research evidence to improve our health and our health-care system.

Donor engagement: When you partner to fund research with MSFHR, you have access to valuable resources you can share with your donors and other stakeholders to show them how you are putting their money to work.

Working with MSFHR to fund Dr. Stuart Cain’s award enabled us to profile his research to our donors and supporters. Dr. Cain wrote and was featured in our print and online publications, and was a speaker in our annual Speaking of Epilepsy lecture series. His contributions through his research and involvement with our organization was very valuable to our stakeholders.
