Fr. Bob’s Briefs This Sunday, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. It’s hard to believe that 43 days have passed already since we celebrated the Resurrection of Christ at Easter. The passage of time and the progression of Paschal time have seemed to go by too fast. The same feeling can be repeated by many people during this time of year, by both students and parents alike. At his time in May and June, many people will be graduating either elementary school, junior high, high school, college and university, and other post graduate levels, such as master’s and doctorate degrees. Every one of us probably knows somebody who will be graduating this year. When we look at our graduates, especially through the eyes of parents, it’s hard for us believe how fast time has gone by. For many parents, it seems just like yesterday that they led their little boy or girl by the hand to kindergarten. Now, nine

years later, we see them walking down the aisle as young women and men. It’s difficult to fathom that just recently they finished high school, and now they are college graduates. Graduation is a time of celebration.

It is the end of study and one period in life, and the beginning of another, new period in life. Often, graduation is a bittersweet time. It is sad and hard to leave behind kind and caring teachers and professors, who have helped us to learn and grow, instilled their knowledge, and passed on their experience and wisdom. At graduation ceremony itself, someone will give a speech to the graduates, offering them words of encouragement and final lessons, as they prepare to embark on the new phase of their life.

As we experience this time of graduation, it is helpful for us to see the Ascension of Jesus as a graduation. On one level, the Ascension can be seen as the graduation of Jesus. Jesus has finished His time and mission on earth. Having completed everything that His Heavenly Father had asked Him to accomplish on earth, Jesus is ready to return back to His Father in heaven. One period in Jesus’ life is finishing, and the commencement of another moment in His life is beginning (for all eternity) as He ascends back to heaven.

However, on another level, the Ascension of Jesus can be seen as the graduation ceremony of the Apostles. For three years, the Apostles have been living closely with Jesus. They have listened to Jesus teach, tell parables, and preach. They have learned from Him. They have been instructed by Jesus, both before and after the Resurrection. Now, as Jesus’ time on earth come to a close, and He leaves earth ascending back to His Father, the Apostles find themselves beginning a new and different period of their life. The Ascension of Jesus was probably a bittersweet time for them too. They were sad to say goodbye to their Teacher and Friend. They were probably scared to leave the security of Jesus’ presence and to go out into the world alone. However, before Jesus ascends back to heaven, He leaves the Apostles one final speech, offering them His final words of lesson and encouragement on their “graduation” ceremony. As we hear in the Gospel of Mark today, Jesus tells the Apostles, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover." After Jesus ascends back to heaven, the Apostles began a new period in their life. They “went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it.” As we celebrate the Ascension of Christ, let us, like the Apostles, the first followers of Jesus, listen to His final words of encouragement and instruction, and be His witnesses in the world today!

On May 16, Archbishop Cupich will ordain 14 men to the priesthood for Archdiocese of Chicago. During this time of May, pray to the Blessed Mother for all priests, living and deceased, and for vocations to the priesthood. May our Good Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care, and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

St. Joseph School: A Community of Faith, Knowledge and Service. 708-458-2927

One of the highlights of our seventh and eighth grade trip to Springfield on May 7th was meeting Senator Sandoval. He spent time with our children inviting them into his office and taking a group picture, (above). While visiting the House of Representatives we observed a ceremony honoring fallen Police Officers, It was very touching listening as a number of the representatives telling their stories and giving their honors to those who protect us. In all it was a good trip. Ribbon Day – Our eighth graders received their preliminary Graduation Ribbons Wednesday, May 13th at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. As Father Bob said during his talk, the ribbons in our school color represent the faith development that we have hoped has been instilled in our graduates. We congratulate them in this first step toward graduation and pray their faith will be strong as they leave St. Joseph. Remember you are always a KNIGHT! Registration 2015 – 2016 – Our open registration has begun. If you are interested in a Catholic Education for your children, please contact me at the school office, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss our school program. One of the Programs the Archdiocese offers to new families is the Caritas Scholars Program. This program provides needs based scholarship money to help offset the cost of tuition. The amount of the award can be as much as 55% of the stated tuition. If you have thought about a Catholic Education for your child this is an opportunity to take a look at St. Joseph and see what our program has to offer. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. Have a great week! God Bless. Lawrence Manetti, Principal

świadectwa i dyplomy odbierają młodzi, niezależni ludzie. Całkiem niedawno chodzili oni do liceum, a tu już kończą college. Graduacja to czas radosnego świętowania. Słuchali Jego nauk i widzieli cuda, jakich dokonywał. Uczyli się od Niego. Teraz, kiedy Syn powraca do Ojca, zaczyna się zupełnie nowy rozdział w życiu Apostołów. Ze smutkiem żegnają Swojego Przyjaciela i Nauczyciela. Boją się ruszyć w świat bez Niego. Przed Swoim odejściem, Pan przekazuje uczniom ostatnią lekcję. Mówi im bowiem: „Idźcie na cały świat i głoście Ewangelię wszelkiemu stworzeniu! Kto uwierzy i przyjmie chrzest, będzie zbawiony; a kto nie uwierzy, będzie potępiony. Tym zaś, którzy uwierzą, te znaki towarzyszyć będą: w imię moje złe duchy będą wyrzucać, nowymi językami mówić będą; węże brać będą do rąk, i jeśliby co zatrutego wypili, nie będzie im szkodzić. Na chorych ręce kłaść będą, i ci odzyskają zdrowie” (Ewangelia według św. Marka 16:15-18). Mesjasz powrócił do Nieba, zaś Apostołowie „poszli i głosili Ewangelię wszędzie, a Pan współdziałał z nimi i potwierdził naukę znakami, które jej towarzyszyły” (Mk 16:19). Vivat Jesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
