As a psychology major fromStockton University, Morgan Bar-nett saw no better opportunitythan to help at a school in a heavi-ly impoverished area of Mexico.

“These kids all needed somesort of psychological treatmentwith everything they had alreadybeen through at such a youngage,” Barnett said.

The Seneca High School gradu-ate was surprised by how openthe children acted around her, being she was a total stranger.

She noticed one of the studentscrying one day while the classwas trying to tell Barnett stories,so she quickly brought a transla-tor over to see what the problemwas. The young girl had recentlylost her mother right beforeChristmas and was crying be-cause Barnett reminded her so

much of her mom.“I hugged her so closely, I never

wanted to put her down again,”Barnett said.

She was given the opportunityto connect with these childrenand hear about their experiencesthrough a mission trip arrangedby her local church, MedfordUnited Methodist. Morgan wasone of six young adults who ac-companied Pastor Kathleen Stolz

to Rio Bravo, Mexico, a town lo-cated in the state of Tamaulipas, about 15 minutes over the Texasborder.

Stolz joined Medford UnitedMethodist Church as associate

pastor in 2013. Before coming toSouth Jersey, she enjoyed a longand varied career as a Christianambassador. But in all the placesshe has lived and people she hasserved, it is children and youthwho most touch her heart.

“It is young adults who can andwill make a difference in thisworld,” Stolz said. “The connec-tions they make so easily withothers allow us as leaders to ad-

mire the ability as we work along-side them to forge new relation-ships.”

“We live in a time when people, especially young people, want toknow how the church can make a

difference, and Kathleen is greatat translating the teachings of thegospel into tangible action. I'm sohappy to be in ministry alongwith her,” Senior Pastor Joe Mon-ahan said.

For years, the Medford UnitedMethodist Church had been put-ting together trips for older adultsand younger kids, but there wasnot much opportunity for youngadults.

Barnett put her head togetherwith Stoltz to brainstorm someideas and was looking at possiblygoing to North Carolina or Haitibefore getting in contact with As-sociate Pastor Tom Lank of the

    Haddonfield United MethodistChurch.

Lank had been making the tripto Rio Bravo with members of hischurch for years and was lookingto fill spots for this year’s trip.

“We hopped on board reallyquickly,” Barnett said. “Just theidea of going to a different coun-try was really appealing. I love totravel and appreciated the au-thentic experience of going

through the border that the mis-sion trip offered.”

The MUMC group was respon-sible for its transportation toLake Whitney Airport in Texas, and the Manos Juntas Volunteers

in Mission Group would take thereins from there.

Rio Bravo is home to ManosJuntas VIM Mexico, A.C., a min-istry of the Methodist Church of Mexico.

The group originally began asa conversation among friends sit-ting in a Piney bar.

“How could we bring like-minded people together to cele-brate and maintain the culturalrichness of the New Jersey Pine

Barrens?” said Linda Stanton, founder and president of the It's aSign of the Pines organization.

Eleven years ago, the firstweekend gathering brought to-gether authors and historianswhose work reflected upon or wasinfluenced by the Pines.

They decided to make the gath-ering an annual get together, andit has become a much-anticipated

networking opportunity for pre-senters and for local communitymembers who attend by the hun-dreds.

toric and environmental groupsof the New Jersey Pine Barrensto showcase their talents, selltheir products and share informa-tion.”

The historically well-attendedevent is gaining a reputation forhaving a laundry list of talent onsite. This year’s Line on the Pines

will have 80 different artists, au-thors, musicians, crafters andgroups.

One of these groups that has

made the prestigious invite list isthe Medford Historical Society, and one of the top artists featuredthis year will be its vice presi-dent, Holly Doyle.

However, Doyle isn’t known forwhat you would consider “nor-mal” art; she is a recycling artist.

The six-year veteran of theLines on the Pines collects every-thing from pinecones to drift-wood to antique buttons. She usesthese seemingly useless items to

create signs, necklaces or whatev-er she can think of with her cre-ative mind.

“If it’s sitting still long enough,I paint on it!” Doyle said.

She enjoys the opportunity tospeak with guests about her workand about the importance of recy-cling when it comes to the preser-vation of the Pinelands.

    Another Medford group attend-

ing the event will be the Dr. JamesStill Historic Office Site and Edu-cation Center. The group got in-volved back in 2012 and takes

great pride in speaking with PineBarrens residents about theirfamily story.

“The history of Dr. James Stilland his family is very importantto the story of the Pinelands. Hislife was an integral part of histo-ry, the families and culture of thePinelands in the 1800s,” descen-dant of Dr. James Still Sam Stillsaid.

The event also features a num-ber of faces from all over the re-

gion that continue to come backeach year after witnessing the ex-travaganza.

“Lines on the Pines was and isa great program to keep up inter-est in the Pine Barrens, and theyare to be thanked for continuingit,” John E. Pearce of the Heart of the Pines group said.

“The event is more like a re-union than an exposition! The at-

mosphere sings out!” America’sOld Time Country Music Hall of Fame representative Jim Murphysaid.

“I can’t thank them enough fortheir generosity in giving me avenue to honor my mother's writ-ing and passion for the Pines,”Anita Marie Lopez said.

The event has found a newhome this year the organizationbelieves will help the traditionflourish. The historic RenaultWinery located at 72 N. BremenAve. in Egg Harbor City is in themiddle of a vast untouched area, nestled in the Pine Barrens.

“It has charm and history, lotsof history,” Stanton said. “Andplenty of parking!”

Throughout the day-long event, the musical trio "CranberryJam," led by Lines on the Pinessupporter Joe Jones, will be play-ing traditional Appalachian folksongs.

Guests are encouraged to bringbooks from home to be signed bythe authors or purchase books onsite as well as handcrafted soaps, baskets, photographs, jewelry,

metal works, crafted beer, carniv-orous plants, decoys, hand-spunarticles, paintings, candles, PineBarrens Diamonds, sculpturesand CDs – all related to the NewJersey Pine Barrens.

The event is sponsored by theAtlantiCare Healing Arts Pro-gram, Stockton University Schoolof Arts and Humanities, theSouth Jersey Culture & HistoryCenter at Stockton, AtlanticCounty Utilities Authority, PlexusPublishing, Inc. and others.

“Remember when in our beau-tiful Pine Barrens, only leave be-hind your footprints in the sugarsand and only take home photos.Lasting memories are guaran-teed!” Stanton said.
