In 2014, the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the USGA announced the formation of the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) in an effort to further develop amateur golf throughout this region, and specifically in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The LAAC follows a model established by the Masters and The R&A when, in 2009, the organizations created the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) for the purpose of advancing the sport in that part of the world and creating heroes that other aspiring golfers would emulate.

The 108-player field is comprised annually of the top male amateurs in Latin America representing the 29 IOC-recognized countries and territories from this region that are current members of the International Golf Federation.

The champion receives an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament, an exemption into The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible. Both the champion and runner(s)-up receive an exemption into The Open Qualifying Series – Final Qualifying for The Open and sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.

In 2015, Matias Dominguez, of Chile, won the inaugural championship by one stroke at Pilar Golf in Argentina. Paul Chaplet of Costa Rica won the second edition in 2016 at Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog course in the Dominican Republic. Toto Gana triumphed in 2017 at Club de Golf de Panama, marking the first time the LAAC was decided in a play-off and the championship’s second winner from Chile. The next year Joaquin Niemann, then the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur, continued Chile’s dominance at the LAAC when he won in his hometown of Santiago at Prince of Wales Country Club. In his fifth and final appearance in the LAAC in 2019, Mexico’s Alvaro Ortiz, who had three previous top-three finishes in the event, captured a two-stroke victory at Casa De Campo in the Dominican Republic.

En 2014, el Masters Tournament, The R&A y la USGA anunciaron la creación del Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) en un esfuerzo que tiene el propósito de promover el crecimiento del golf y de inspirar aún mayor interés en este deporte en Sudamérica, Centroamérica, México y el Caribe.

El LAAC sigue un modelo establecido por el Masters y The R&A. En 2009 estas organizaciones crearon el Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) con el propósito de impulsar este deporte en esa parte del mundo y el objetivo de crear a los héroes del futuro que muchos aspirantes a golfistas querrán imitar.

El evento contará con la participación de los mejores 108 jugadores amateurs de América Latina que representarán a los 29 países y territorios reconocidos por el COI de esta región que actualmente son miembros de la Federación Internacional de Golf.

El campeón del LAAC será invitado a competir en el Masters Tournament. Además, el ganador y el jugador o jugadores que finalicen en el segundo lugar entrarán en forma directa a las fases finales de clasificación para The Open y el U.S. Open. Por último, el campeón recibirá exenciones completas para disputar The Amateur Championship, el U.S. Amateur Championship, y todo otro campeonato amateur de la USGA para el cual sea elegible.

En 2015, el chileno Matías Domínguez ganó el evento inaugural por un golpe en Pilar Golf. En 2016, el costarricense Paul Chaplet triunfó en la segunda edición del LAAC en Teeth of The Dog en Casa de Campo, República Dominicana. El triunfo de Toto Gana en 2017 en el Club de Golf de Panamá marcó la primera definición a través de un playoff. El año siguiente, Joaquín Niemann, entonces el número uno en el ranking mundial amateur, continuó el dominio de Chile en el LAAC cuando ganó por cinco golpes en su ciudad natal de Santiago en el Prince of Wales Country Club. En su quinta y última aparición en el LAAC en 2019, el mexicano Álvaro Ortiz, quien había logrado tres top-3 en el evento, obtuvo una victoria de dos golpes en Casa De Campo en República Dominicana.

QualificationThe 108-player field comprises the top male amateurs in Latin America. Invitations for the championship are sent to the leading players from the 29 IOC-recognized countries and territories from this region that are current members of the International Golf Federation. Each country is automatically provided with two positions, which are to be filled by their best-ranked players from the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®). If there is only one player or there are no players from the country in WAGR®, a federation is able to nominate one or two players accordingly, provided the player(s) have a handicap of 5.4 or less. The host country can nominate enough players, if needed, to fill up to six positions. The remainder of the field is filled by taking the next best-ranked players from WAGR®.

A cada organización se le concede automáticamente dos lugares para los jugadores mejor ubicados en el World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®). Si hay sólo uno o ninguno de los jugadores del país en el ranking, la organización puede nombrar a uno o dos jugadores en consecuencia siempre que el jugador/es tengan handicap de 5,4 o menos. De ser necesario, el país anfitrión puede nombrar una cantidad suficiente de jugadores para llenar hasta seis cupos. El resto del cupo de los jugadores participantes se llenará tomando los de mejor ubicación en el WAGR®.

In its short history, the Latin America Amateur Championship has given rise to impressive champions who have gone on to play in the Masters Tournament, as well as runners-up who competed in the U.S. Open, The Open Qualifying Series and sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open. The following pages recap the excitement of each championship as we celebrate the creation of some of the game’s future heroes.

Mexico’s Alvaro Ortiz dazzled on the second nine of his fifth and final appearance at the Latin America Amateur Championship to seal a two-stroke victory at the Teeth of the Dog course at Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic.

With his victory, the Guadalajara native earned an invitation to compete in the 2019 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, as well as full exemptions into The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he was eligible. In addition, he earned an exemption into the final stages of qualifying for The 148th Open at Royal Portrush and the 2019 U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach.

“When I was a freshman, I remember seeing maybe a couple of guys from Chile, from Argentina, a couple from Brazil and Mexico,” Ortiz stated. “When I was a senior, it just stunned me that every single tournament you go to, there’s at least five to six Latin American players. It just shows you how much this tournament has helped grow the game and how much people are interested in now going to seek the best competition there is.”

With three previous top-three finishes in the event, Ortiz found himself trailing by two strokes with just 10 holes to play in Sunday’s final round. His subsequent bogey-free second nine included three birdies and an eagle, highlighted by a near hole out of his approach from the 17th fairway, leading him to a final-round six-under-par 66 for a championship total 14-under-par 274.

Ortiz, who turned professional after competing in the 2019 Masters Tournament, finished as the Low Amateur Runner-Up at Augusta National, shooting a two-under-par 286. He became just the second amateur golfer from Mexico to compete in the Masters Tournament, and the first Masters invitee from Mexico in 40 years.

Designed by Pete Dye, Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo features seven holes along the Atlantic Ocean and is routinely ranked one of the best courses throughout Latin America. Casa de Campo also served as the host of the 2016 Latin America Amateur Championship, won by Paul Chaplet, of Costa Rica. Weather Conditions

No weather delays occurred during the championship with partly sunny conditions throughout the week. One quarter of an inch of rainfall fell on Thursday. High temperatures ranged from 29-30 degrees Celsius. Light winds prevailed throughout the week, with gusts up to 20 miles per hour.

Álvaro Ortiz de México deslumbró en los segundos nueve hoyos finales en su quinta y última aparición en el Latin America Amateur Championship para sellar una victoria de dos golpes en Teeth of the Dog en Casa De Campo, República Dominicana.

Con su victoria, el nativo de Guadalajara obtuvo una invitación para competir en el Masters 2019 en Augusta National Golf Club, así como exenciones completas jugar The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur, y cualquier otro campeonato amateur de la USGA para el que fuera elegible. Además, obtuvo una exención para disputar las etapas finales de clasificación para The 148º Open en Royal Portrush y el U.S. Open 2019 en Pebble Beach.

"Cuando era estudiante de primer año, recuerdo haber visto quizás algún que otro chico de Chile, Argentina, Brasil y México. Luego, cuando llegué a senior en la universidad, me sorprendió que en cada torneo donde participaba, había al menos cinco o seis jugadores latinoamericanos. Eso simplemente te muestra cuánto ha ayudado este certamen a hacer crecer el juego y cuánta gente está interesada ahora en buscar la mejor competencia que existe", destacó Ortiz.

Con tres top-3 en su historial en este campeonato, Ortiz se encontró dos golpes detrás del líder con solo diez hoyos por jugar en la ronda final del domingo. Sus siguientes nueve hoyos libre de bogeys incluyeron tres birdies y un águila, y un approach que casi se mete desde el fairway del 17, lo que lo llevó a una vuelta final de 6 bajo par (66) para un total de 274 golpes (-14).

Ortiz, que se convirtió en profesional después de competir en el Masters Tournament de 2019, en donde terminó como segundo mejor aficionado en Augusta National, al finalizar con 286 golpes (-2). Álvaro Se convirtió en el segundo golfista amateur de México en competir en el Masters Tournament y el primer invitado mexicano al Masters en 40 años.

Joaquin Niemann of Chile, the No. 1-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, played a blazing stretch of seven holes in seven under par midway through the final round to seize the fourth LAAC at Prince of Wales Country Club.

With his win, the 19-year-old earned an invitation to compete in the 2018 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, as well as full exemptions into The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he was eligible. In addition, he earned an exemption into the final stages of qualifying for The 147th Open at Carnoustie and the 2018 U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills.

Niemann became the third player from his home country to win the LAAC in four years, and he did it before hundreds of excited fans in his hometown of Santiago. His final round of eight-under-par 63 broke the championship record and helped him finish at 11-under-par 273 for the week as he overcame a one-stroke deficit to Alvaro Ortiz of Mexico entering the final round.

Niemann drove the green on the 313-yard, par-4 eighth hole thanks to a fortuitous bounce off a tree, then sank the eagle putt to start his winning run. He reeled off four consecutive birdies on holes 9-12, and after a par on the 13th, he added a two-putt birdie on the par-5 14th.

“After I made that eagle on the eighth hole and I birdied 9, 10, 11 and 12, I didn't watch the leaderboard until the 14th hole,” said Niemann. “I realized at that moment that I had a huge advantage over the other players, so I thought maybe this was going to be my tournament.”

Chile's Toto Gana, who defeated Niemann and Ortiz in a playoff to win the 2017 championship, and was tied with Niemann at three under to start the final round on Tuesday, closed with a one-over 72 and finished in a tie for seventh place.

El chileno Joaquín Niemann, el número 1 del Ranking Mundial Amateur de Golf, dio una verdadera cátedra de golf y se lució durante la ronda final para quedarse con la cuarta edición del Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) en el Prince of Wales Country Club.

Con esta victoria, el joven de 19 años consiguió una invitación para competir en el Masters 2018 en Augusta National Golf Club, así como exenciones completas jugar The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur, y cualquier otro campeonato amateur de la USGA para el que fuera elegible. También consiguió un lugar en la etapa final de clasificación para The 147th Open en Carnoustie y para el U.S. Open 2018 en Shinnecock Hills.

Niemann se convirtió en el tercer jugador de Chile en ganar el LAAC en cuatro ediciones, y lo hizo en su ciudad natal de Santiago ante cientos de fanáticos locales. Su última ronda de 63 golpes (8 bajo par) rompió el récord del campeonato y lo ayudó a terminar con un total de 273 golpes (-11) para la semana. Niemann arrancó la ronda final un golpe detrás del mexicano Álvaro Ortiz.

Con un espectacular golpe en el par 4 del hoyo 8 de 313 yardas, Niemann puso la pelota en el green con el driver, gracias a un rebote fortuito contra un árbol, y luego logró embocar el putt para águila. "Después de hacer ese águila en el ocho y birdies en el 9, 10, 11 y 12, no miré la tabla de posiciones hasta el hoyo 14", dijo Niemann. "En ese momento me di cuenta que tenía una gran ventaja sobre los otros jugadores y ahí pensé que se me podía dar".

En tanto Toto Gana (CHI), defensor del título, quien derrotó a Niemann y Ortiz en un desempate en 2017, salió a jugar la ronda final del martes empatado con Niemann con tres bajo par y cerró con 72 golpes (+1), para terminar compartiendo el séptimo lugar.

Tomas “Toto” Gana, of Chile, captured a dramatic win in the third Latin America Amateur Championship with the tournament’s first-ever playoff. The 19-year-old calmly holed a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to become the LAAC’s second Chilean champion.

With the victory, Gana earned an invitation to the 2017 Masters Tournament, as well as exemptions into The Amateur Championship (conducted by The R&A) and the U.S. Amateur Championship (conducted by the USGA). He also earned spots in final qualifying for The 146th Open and the 2017 U.S. Open.

Playing in the final group of the day with fellow countryman Joaquin Niemann and Mexico’s Alvaro Ortiz, Gana used a birdie on the par-4 15th hole to open a two-stroke lead over his playing partners.

Gana staggered down the stretch, saving pars with a pair of putts on Nos. 16 and 17 and then bogeying the 18th as Niemann and Ortiz used birdies on the 17th to tie him after 72 holes at one-under-par 279. Gana made a gutsy up-and-down on the first playoff hole to save par and tie his fellow two competitors to extend their head-to-head battle.

On the second playoff hole, the 386-yard, par-4 No. 10, Niemann bunkered his approach and Ortiz found the green, but left himself with a long, difficult putt. Hitting last from 99 yards, Gana used his 52-degree wedge and sent the ball two feet from the hole to set up an easy birdie putt.

“I hit the best shot I’ve hit in my whole life, at the best time,” said Gana, 19, who entered the LAAC at No. 285 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. “I’ve never felt this feeling in my body before.”

Ortiz and Niemann carded a par and bogey, respectively, to finish as joint runners-up. Despite his close call, Niemann was happy for his close friend’s victory.

“I believe he deserves it 100 percent, with all the sacrifice he makes,” said Niemann. “I am very happy for him and I’m waiting for next year so I can have my chance.”

Founded in 1922, Club de Golf de Panama opened its current location in 1977, which is now 15 minutes from Panama City following the construction of a new highway. Jay Riviere and Charles Schaeffer designed the 18-hole course under the watchful eye of club member Carlos Arosemena Lacayo. Gana salió a jugar el domingo en el grupo final junto a su compatriota Joaquín Niemann y el mexicano Álvaro Ortiz. Al terminar el par 4 del hoyo 15, Toto pudo sacar una ventaja de dos golpes luego de convertir su birdie.

Pero no pudo cerrarlo completamente tras hacer dos pares (16 y 17) y un bogey en el 18. En tanto, Niemann y Ortiz lograban un birdie en el 17 que en definitiva dejaba a los tres jugadores empatados con un total de 279 golpes luego de jugados los 72 hoyos del torneo.

En el primer hoyo de desempate (18), Gana salvó maravillosamente su par al igual que Niemann y Ortiz, para extender la definición un hoyo más.

En el segundo hoyo del playoff (10), un par 4 de 386 yardas, Niemann dejó su segundo tiro en el búnker y Ortiz encontró el green, pero lejos del hoyo. Mientras que Gana ejecutó un extraordinario tiro con su wedge de 52° desde solo 99 yardas para dejarla prácticamente dada.

"Pegué el mejor tiro de mi vida, en el mejor momento", comentó Toto sobre lo que fue el golpe del torneo. "Nunca me he sentido de esta manera, es una sensación única", finalizó el chileno de 19 años que había llegado al LAAC como número 285 en el Ranking Mundial Amateur.

Finalmente, Niemann y Ortiz quedaron empatados en el segundo lugar. A pesar de haber estado tan cerca, Niemann se mostró feliz por la victoria de su mejor amigo. "Lo merece completamente, con todo el sacrificio que hace día a día. Estoy muy feliz por él y espero poder tener mi chance el año que viene", manifestó el subcampeón chileno.

Paul Chaplet, of Costa Rica, executed a delicate chip shot that led to a tap-in birdie on the 485-yard, par-5 14th to take a one-stroke lead, then outdueled a tightly bunched group of players down the stretch to capture a one-stroke victory, winning the Latin America Amateur Championship with a three-under-par total of 285.

With the victory, Chaplet earned an invitation to the 2016 Masters Tournament, as well as exemptions into The Amateur Championship (conducted by The R&A) and the U.S. Amateur Championship (conducted by the USGA). He also earned spots in final qualifying for The 145th Open and the 2016 U.S. Open.

After two pars to start his day, Chaplet made a tap-in birdie on the 534-yard, par-5 third hole. He added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, but made his first bogey of the day on the difficult par-3 13th hole, which had as many bogeys (21) as pars for the day.

On No. 14, the least difficult hole of the day with a 4.54 stroke average, Chaplet was determined to get the stroke back. His second shot on the par 5 went over the green and left him with a slightly downhill chip to a green that sloped away. He executed it with perfect touch, and later called it the crucial shot of the day.

“It was not an easy chip shot, and I knew I needed to make something good there,” said Chaplet. “That shot gave me momentum to keep going, and really gave me a positive attitude on the holes that came after.”

The closing four holes of Casa de Campo played an average of two strokes over par for the 50-player field on Sunday, so Chaplet’s bogey after missing the green to the left on the par-3 16th was not unexpected. He made a pair of solid pars on Nos. 17 and 18.

Jorge Garcia, of Venezuela, who was tied with Chaplet as he played the par-4 17th hole, hit his approach shot into a fronting bunker and made bogey. Garcia played a brilliant approach shot to the final green, but missed a 10-foot birdie putt that would have forced a playoff and finished at two-under 286.

“I feel like with the way I hit the ball, I had more than enough chances to win this championship,” said Garcia. “It’s something that gives me a lot of confidence, and I’ll just work harder next year.”

Después de dos pares para comenzar el día, Chaplet la dejó dada para birdie en el hoyo 3, un par 5 de 534 yardas. Agregó dos birdies más en los hoyos 7 y 8, pero hizo su primer bogey del día en el difícil par 3 del hoyo 13, que tuvo tantos bogeys (21) como pares en el día.

Los últimos hoyos de Casa de Campo jugaron a un promedio de dos golpes sobre par para los 50 jugadores del domingo, así que el bogey de Chaplet en el par 3 del hoyo 16 no fue inesperado. Pero se mantufo firme con dos pares sólidos en los hoyos 17 y 18.

Por otro lado Jorge García, de Venezuela, quien estaba empatado con Chaplet en el par 4 del hoyo 17, jugó su approach y la dejó en el bunker, donde anotó un bogey. García jugó un tiro brillante al último green, pero falló un putt para birdie de 3 metros que lo hubiera llevado a un playoff, y terminó con dos bajo par (286).

“Siento que de la manera en que le he pegado a la pelota, me dejé más que suficientes oportunidades para ganar este campeonato”, dijo García. “Es algo que me deja tranquilo y me da mucha confianza para el año que viene. Voy a trabajar más duro que nunca".

Matias Dominguez, of Chile, holed a short bogey putt on the 72nd hole to hold off Alejandro Tosti, of Argentina, by one stroke and capture the inaugural Latin America Amateur Championship with an 11-under-par total of 277 at Pilar Golf outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Dominguez earned an exemption into the 2015 Masters Tournament, as well as exemptions into The Amateur Championship (conducted by The R&A) and the U.S. Amateur Championship (conducted by the USGA). He also earned spots in final qualifying for The 144th Open and the 2015 U.S. Open.

Dominguez, 22, the third-round leader by one stroke over Tosti, carded a final-round 71 as the championship came down to a near match-play situation between the two competitors. Dominguez led by three strokes after nine holes, but the lead was whittled to one when Tosti birdied the 303-yard, par-4 15th after driving the green and Dominguez bogeyed the next hole, the par-4 16th.

The 178-yard, par-3 17th proved pivotal. Tosti hit his tee shot to 20 feet, inside Dominguez, who was on the fringe. But Dominguez putted up to tap-in range, and Tosti knocked his birdie shot four feet past the hole, then missed his par putt to restore Dominguez’s margin to two strokes with one hole to play.

Dominguez played conservatively on the par-4 18th, which features water on the right and in front of the green, and tapped in for bogey from two feet to earn the victory after Tosti made him earn it by saving his own par from five feet.

“It was going well until probably the 13th hole,” said Dominguez, who won the tournament as a senior at Texas Tech University. “The crowd made it really hard for me to focus. It’s almost impossible to keep calm in that position, but I tried to do my best. On that short putt [on No. 18], I couldn’t even feel anything.”

El par 3 de 178 yardas del hoyo 17 de Pilar Golf resultó determinante. Tosti realizó el tiro de salida y dejó su pelota a seis metros del hoyo, más cerca que Domínguez que la dejó en el primer corte del green. El chileno utilizó el putter para el segundo tiro y la dejó prácticamente dada, mientras que el argentino se pasó del hoyo por un metro y terminó haciendo tres putts. De esa manera, Domínguez sacó dos golpes de ventaja con un hoyo por jugar.

El chileno jugó de manera conservadora el par 4 del 18, que tiene agua por la derecha y en la parte frontal del green. Lo único que tuvo que hacer es embocar un comprometido putt para bogey de un metro de distancia, luego de que Tosti salvara su par desde un metro y medio.

“Todo iba bien hasta, probablemente, el hoyo 13”, dijo Domínguez, quien ganó este torneo en su último año en la Universidad Texas Tech. “El público hizo muy difícil el poder concentrarme. Fue casi imposible mantener la calma en la posición en la que me encontraba, pero traté de hacerlo lo mejor posible. En ese corto putt (del hoyo 18), no podía sentir absolutamente nada”.

In 2015, the inaugural LAAC was staged in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at Pilar Golf, which opened in 1992 and has hosted the Argentina Open twice (2006, 2011), among other national championships. In addition, Pilar Golf is home to the Argentina Golf Association National Training Center.

En 2015, la edición inaugural del LAAC se llevó a cabo en Pilar Golf, Buenos Aires, Argentina. El club, establecido en 1992, ha recibido el Abierto de la República Argentina dos veces (2006, 2011), entre otros campeonatos nacionales. Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog course, located in the Dominican Republic, played host to the 2016 and 2019 editions of the LAAC. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1971, the course features seven holes along the Atlantic Ocean and is routinely ranked one of the best courses throughout all of Latin America.

Club de Golf de Panama played host to the third LAAC in 2017 just outside of Panama City. Moved to its current location in 1977, the course was designed by Jay Riviere and Charles Schaeffer under the watchful eye of club member Carlos Arosemena Lacayo, and has hosted the Korn Ferry Tour’s Panama Championship since 2004.
