She plans to attend to promote the organization, inform about the Pre-Retirement Seminars and highlight the benefits of early ASURA membership.

• University Staff Council – Katie Aguilar No report.

VII. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS (5 minutes or less please) • Community Outreach Committee – Subcommittee Reports

o Adopt-A-Family – Ginny Sylvester President Thompson read a letter from the Superintendent of Tempe Elementary School District thanking the Retirees Association for this program and how appreciative the recipient family was.

o Scholarship Committee – Joy Shearman Joy reported that Barbara Fargotstein will be taking over as Chair of the Scholarship Committee in May. Joy then noted that there are already 8-10 applications for the ASURA scholarship and that it does not post until March 1st. Francis Romero, the current scholarship recipient, has committed to attending the ASURA Annual Meeting in April.

o Video History Project – Barry McNeill Barry noted that the next interview is scheduled in March. He then commended Pat Schneider for her great work on the metadata for the various interviews. She has just finished with the Lattie Coor interview and is now working on the Roy Doyle interview. Barry noted that he has completed the work on the Valentine interview and it is posted. Both Barry and Carl Cross shared how interesting the interviews were to listen to and encouraged the Board members to consider volunteering to work on the metadata portion and learn from the interviews.

• Events Committee & Subcommittee Reports o Events Committee Coordination – Jo Madonna

Nothing new to report.

o Luncheons & Special Events – Jean Duncan Jean said that she has begun working on the budget for next year’s events. Ability360 has upgraded their equipment so she expects prices to go up.

o Seminars – Bev Buddee Bev reported that registration for the February seminar on Elder Law and Preparing for Passing had filled quickly so this became the first seminar to offer a live streaming option via the ASU Zoom app. The March 19 seminar on Email Migration and Cyber Security will also have a live streaming option. Bev then noted that the Committee is toying with the idea of offering an April seminar. She will clarify at the next Board meeting.

o Pre-Retirement Seminars – Trudy Perez, Liz Badalamenti Trudy was not present. President Thompson reported that she had attended the last pre-retirement seminar which could be attended either in person or via Zoom. The next Pre-Retirement Seminar will be on March 10; no topic has been announced yet. ASU Insight is now posting the seminars. Linda Van Scoy will coordinate the posting of future seminars with Insight.

o Travel – John Brock John reported that the John Denver show was well received with over 30 folks attending. The Travel Committee may try to do something similar with the Rhythm Cats. John is also talking with Detours Tours regarding a 2-day trip to southeast Arizona in early May. With Bisbee as a hub, sites of interest could include the Amber Inn (Indian Museum), Apple Annie’s, a dairy, pistachio orchard, Fort Bowie, and the Copper Queen Mine Tour. The Copper Queen Hotel would be the choice hotel. A possible fall trip with Detours would be to Jerome and Cottonwood. Potential local travel being investigated includes a tour of the Arizona Biltmore, lunch and a tour of the Wrigley Mansion. International travel: a Mediterranean cruise is scheduled for this year. The Committee is investigating a Spring 2021 trip to Iceland and Costa Rica in 2021.

• Finance Committee – Barry Bruns o Book Collection – Mary Stevens

No report.

• Government Liaison Council o Legislature – Jeri Meeks, Tara Fuchs-Roesler, Pat Schneider

years, President Crow acknowledged the ASURA participants and posed for a picture with Tara and Bill. Jeri and Tara attended the Governor’s Council on Aging recent meeting, the topic of which was utility company cost savings programs and solutions for people on fixed incomes. In attendance were representatives from all the major utility companies. The utility companies outlined their various programs in place to assist qualified individuals and the requirements that needed to be met to qualify for participation. After much discussion and questions, the utility companies acknowledged there was low program participation due to poor communication with the community. Jeri noted that the legislature is moving quickly with several bills of interest having already moved from the House to the Senate. HB 2238, which requires ABOR to establish, fund and staff the Office of Public Policy Events at each of the in-state universities, had its second reading on February 10. HB 2113 is a bill regarding ASRS employer member contributions (prepping for the possibility of the universities leaving ASRS). The bill moved to the Senate on February 6. SB 1034, regarding ASRS required distributions and non-participatory employers, was transmitted to the house on February 4. SB 1033, regarding an ASRS self-insurance program, is designed to make sure the wording in the Arizona Revised Statutes is in place to allow them to move to self-insurance. Tara noted that ASRS is not talking about medical insurance but is researching self-insurance for dental and drug coverage. HB 2124 is regarding qualifications to register for voting privileges. After discussion of HB2124 and the effect on both retirees and students, Connie McNeill put forward a motion: The ASURA Board opposes HB2124, and directs our lobbyist to speak against it. The motion was seconded and unanimously accepted. Barry McNeill will include an article regarding this bill in the next issues of the ASURA E-News.Board members were reminded that they must not use an asu.edu email address if they contact their representatives.

o ASRS Liaison – Dick Jacob No report.

o ADOA Liaison – Larry Carlson Larry noted the difficulty in getting the agency to share information.

• Health Insurance Liaison Council o ASRS – Dick Jacob

No report.

o ADOA – Larry Carlson No report.

• Membership and Communications Committee – Subcommittee Reports o E-News – Barry McNeill

Barry will include an article regarding HB2124 in the next edition of E-news.

o Membership Update – Dave Schwalm Dave noted that membership is doing OK. A discussion did ensue regarding the nice bump in 3-5 year memberships but also the down trend in 0-2 year members when the numbers of free memberships are removed. Dave noted that the ASURA presentations at the HR Retirement meetings are well received; however, there seem to be fewer of those meetings recently. President Thompson volunteered to call Judy Cato, the HR representative, and personally invite her to the next Board meeting.

o Obituaries – Becky Reiss No report.

o Prime Times – Jeannette Robson No report.

o Web Site and Database – Connie McNeill Connie reported an unfortunate incident that happened during on line voting for new board members – the [email protected] email address stopped working. While the issue eventually resolved itself, she and Paul are working on a work-around solution should it happen again.

VIII. UNFINISHED BUSINESS • Discussion on publication of “Third Decade of Success”.

Connie and Barry McNeill have agreed to edit and compile the book, “Third Decade of Success.” They suggest that this book celebrate the successes of the last 10 years, which would be a different format than the first 2 books. See the attached sheet for a list of possible chapters/sections. Barry thought the book could possibly be done by the 2021 annual meeting. The Board voted unanimously to endorse the idea.

• Marketing Box update President Thompson reported that there are now 2 complete marketing boxes. The Board had authorized $600; the total expenditure came to $800. The Board then discussed the purchase of additional marketing items to include in the boxes. President Thompson and Jeri Meeks will attend a Geiger vendor fair. Other vendor sources will also be investigated.

IX. NEW BUSINESS • Federal and State tax changes affecting ASURA – Bill Stasi

Bill requested the Board consider changing the line item “Membership Dues” on the ASURA membership application (in print and online versions). While ASURA falls under the ASU Foundation 501(c)3 status and our “dues” are tax deductible contributions, the IRS has a different definition of the word and does not consider dues as contributions. After some discussion, the Board agreed to remove the word “dues” from the forms so the line item will simply read “Membership”.

• Board Election Update – Tara Fuchs Roesler Tara thanked the members of the nominating committee for their hard work in getting such a great mix of candidates representing all campuses, faculty and staff, genders. Voting closes on at noon on Friday, February 28, and will be

counted the same day. Tara will notify the Executive Committee of the results shortly thereafter.

• Annual report – Jan Thompson President Thompson asked the Committee Chairs to submit their yearend reports by March 15, 2020. She requested that these reports be sent electronically to Barry McNeill with a copy to her.

• AROHE Hero Awards selection committee – Jan Thompson President Thompson advised the Board that Bill Verdini, President-elect of the Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education (AROHE) has asked for a volunteer from ASURA to staff the AROHE Hero Awards Selection Committee. He also asked her to share with ASURA members the opportunity to serve as Interim Treasurer for all AROHE.

• Main Campus Staff BBQ – Tuesday, March 17 President Thompson and Barry McNeill will staff the ASURA table at the Tempe campus staff BBQ.

AASSUURRAA – CCeelleebbrraattiinngg aa 33rrdd DDeeccaaddee ooff SSuucccceessss2012-2021

The question of whether ASURA wanted to prepare a third volume of its Decade of Success books was discussed at the January 2020 Board Meeting. Following is an outline for such a book, focusing on celebrating our many successes.

Introduction

We have continued through our 3rd decade as a highly successful organization. Our membership numbers are strong and our members participate in a wide and plentiful variety of Association activities. Our finances are stable.

We believe success is obtained through maintaining our focus on our mission, which is to serve the interests of retired people, especially people who retired from Arizona State University.

A survey of retirees and members that ASURA conducted in the 2013-2014 year guided our priorities for the rest of the decade. Advocacy for retirees was clearly favored as the most important facet of our mission, and it remains so today.

Celebration of Successes (possible chapters/sections):

• Vibrant membership – highlight membership numbers and participation, revision of by-laws Fall 2013 to broaden membership eligibility, establishment of Introductory membership and auto-membership for new retirees.

INFORMATION ON NOMINEES

Larry Edmonds is a Sun Devil through-and-through. He returned to ASU as an adult studentin his 40’s and earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and eventually his doctorate in HigherEducation/Educational Leadership and Innovation. Larry taught at ASU from 2000 until heretired in late 2019 from the Downtown Campus. His research has been on the introduction ofthe intersectionality of gender and other cultural identities into the online university, Genderand Communication class, with intersectionality including ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and differently-abled. Larry worked directly with students for many years who areregistered with ASU’s Disability Resources Center (DRC) and was honored to receive in 2015from Teacher Educators for Children with Behavioral Disorders the 2015 Robert B.Rutherford, Jr. Fellowship.Kathy Gunn began working for the new Provost of the ASU West campus in August 1985. They started out in a small temporary facility located at 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. It has been an exciting place to work, and to watch and be a part of all the growth and changes that have taken place.

Kathy retired from ASU February 2019. She has 4 grandchildren, two boys in Blue Springs, MI ages 19 & 16 and a 2-year-old grandson and 9 month old girl that live 5 minutes away. So in addition to spending more time with her husband and little people she is enjoying doing various projects around the house (eventually to downsize), volunteer with a homeless ministry and taking life slow.

It would be an honor to be part of the ASURA. Thank you for your consideration.

Mark Henderson retired from The Polytechnic School (Engineering) and as Associate Dean of Barrett Honors College in 2019 after 35 years at ASU. His original research area was computer-aided design that morphed into design for global development. He now serves as Board President of GlobalResolve, a multi-campus social entrepreneurship program in Barrett Honors College where teams of students and faculty help create sustainable communities in the developing world. He is a member of the advisory board of the Maasai Education, Research and Conservation Institute in Kenya. Henderson’s wife, Sue, also retired from ASU in 2019 as an Academic Advisor in Engineering. Their three grown children, Erin, Ben and Abby, collectively have 5 degrees from ASU.

I look forward to staying involved with my fellow retirees while on the ASURA Board.

Jill Massara retired from ASU WP Carey School of Accountancy in April 2017. She was the front office staff working with 55 faculty. Jill has degrees in Technology Management and Educational Technology and is familiar with Apple/MAC and PC systems.

I am interested in being a board member with ASU Retirees Association because I feel that our ASU Retirees deserve someone who will be their advocate.

Trudy Perez is an active ASU employee, who joined ASURA 5 years ago. She developed and co-chairs the pre-retirement seminar program with the goal to encourage all faculty and staff to look at early retirement options, insuring a win/win experience.

Trudy serves on the Staff Council Executive Board as Treasurer and chairs the Scholarship and Fund Raiser committee. She is a member, 12 years, of University Career Women (UCW) which supports personal development and growth. Trudy has 20+ years at ASU supporting housing, OHR, education, and engineering and is currently a customer service specialist with Parking & Transit working with new faculty, staff and students.

• Vibrant events – highlight Fall Meet & Greet (began Fall 2011), expansion and success of seminars and the range of topics, rise of pre-retirement seminars. Mention demise of Retirees day. Perhaps mention big increase in international travel events.

• Active advocacy – highlight Legislative activity, preservation of ASU Outlook access for retirees

• Active contributions to ASU – Highlight Video History project including establishment of recording studio and video editing studio, move to library. Highlight our scholarship program, perhaps use some recipient remarks/info.

• Active membership communication – highlight the 2014 survey, establishment of e-news, expanding website. Mention obituaries, the 2nd decade publication, Prime Times improvements.

• Healthy finances – highlight relatively stable dues, membership donations in excess of dues, establishment of financial health report spring 2014, regular good reviews of financial records and financial management. Also book drive and establishment of ability to pay by credit card (2013).

• Healthy relationship with ASU – highlight move of sponsorship and support from former Public Affairs to Human Resources, stable financial support, recognition from President Crow.

• Officers, Board Members and Chairs – highlight the willingness of members to participate in the running of the Association.
