The Lord surely works in mysterious ways!” was the comment I

shared with Monsignor Gene Lindemann, 1975 graduate of Trinity High School and now Moderator of the Curia and Vicar General for the Diocese of Bismarck on December 31, 2014 as I transitioned from my diocese office to this new and exciting opportunity with the Dickinson Catholic Schools on January 1, 2014. “Oh, yes He does,” Monsignor Gene responded with a reassuring nod and a genuine smile.

The transition from my diocesan assignment to the Dickinson Catholic Schools Director of Major and Planned Giving gives me the opportunity to dedicate 100% of my time to the advancement of our schools. First up is the management of the capital campaign to rebuild our high school and to build an elementary school on the Trinity campus to house the elementary students. That project will take $32 million. Simultaneously, our endowment (Dickinson Catholic Schools Foundation) needs to grow to ensure not only the future of our schools, but the future of our church for generations to come.

I did get a running start on the campaign process with Bishop Kagan’s thoughtful assignment to assist with the capital campaign in October 2014. During that time I had

the opportunity to work with President Steve Glasser, Director of Advancement John Odermann and the campaign cabinet which triggered a great start to our campaign.

I am honored to work beside a team of professionals including Steve, John and Advancement Office Assistant Tammy Hovet. This makes for a great team which brings a variety of experiences and capabilities to the multifaceted fund development arena.

Often times we forget the enormous pressure put on philanthropy to operate and advance our Catholic Schools. Our operating budget alone relies heavily on fund raising (30%) and parish subsidy (30%). Tuition covers the remaining 40%. You throw in a multimillion dollar capital campaign and the need to grow our f o u n d a t i o n , and we have quite a philanthropic c h a l l e n g e . To meet these goals i m m e d i a t e gifts of cash and assets are needed. However, the p r o m o t i o n of planned giving is paramount in securing the future of our schools.

Virtually all planned gifts end up being much larger gifts as they are often times part of a family’s plan which bequests part of their estate to our schools or church.

None-the-less, it is good to be back telling the story of the Dickinson Catholic Schools full time. It does my heart well to know how the Catholic Schools advancement program has progressed the last 26 years from a one person, no computer development office with furniture donated by Woolworth’s to where it is today. God has a plan for us. Listen to Him and be not afraid. Let’s get started!

PHG PRAIRIE PHOENIX B101

75% Gelbvieh Bull Registration #:1278867 PHG | B101 4/3/2014 BW: 84 | WW: 738

We are proud to present PHG Prairie Phoenix B101 as our donation animal to the Dickinson Catholic School System’s “Holy Cow Club”. We wanted to choose a top end animal who could go out and really perform for his new owner – Phoenix is that animal. B101 offers an awesome EPD profile that goes well with his eye catching good looks. Straight made and clean fronted, we’ve had our eye on him as a show potential since birth. We purchased his dam from the Beastrom dispersal in 2013 after seeing her last calf in Denver as their futurity bull. This is a top notch, breeder quality bull who combines all the right pieces into a very desirable package! Retaining ½ semen interest.

100% of the proceeds from PHG Prairie Phoenix B101 will be donated to the Dickinson Catholic Schools “Holy Cow Club”. The group was started in 1993 by my grandfather, Albert Sickler, and other area farmers and ranchers as a way of helping to support the school system by donating the proceeds of one calf each year. After about a decade, the group grew smaller and was eventually disbanded. The fire that gutted Trinity High School in March of 2014, and the plans to build a new unified campus, brought the need for additional funding to light. Like the mythical Phoenix, we hope the school will be able to rise from the ashes and be born anew. We are proud that this will be the first animal sold under this reborn group and hope that you will help support this worthy cause. If you are interested in more information, please contact Klint, or the advancement staff at Dickinson Catholic Schools.

why CatholiC eduCation? From the Desk of the Dean

Trinity Junior High and High School Dean of Students, Father Kregg Hochhalter, sat down with a Dickinson Catholic Schools’ parent and student to gain some insight into why they believe in Catholic education. Kelly is a parent and alumna of Dickinson Catholic Schools. She has three children in the school system and is a 1985 graduate from Trinity High School.Phil is a senior at Trinity Junior High and High school. After spending twelve years in the school system, Phil will graduate in May and then begin his undergraduate studies at Bismarck State college.

Why private, Catholic education?

What has Trinity given you that you wouldn’t have found in other places?

What are you most proud about at Trinity High School?

What do you tell other parents about Dickinson Catholic Schools?

Phil: It’s a great privilege to enjoy Catholic education...praying over the intercom every morning is a good way to start class every day.

Kelly: The family atmosphere and close-knit attitude of the parents, teachers, and students...it just seems like we all know each other to the extent of seeing one another as family.

Kelly: When our children come together to worship, not only is it impressive, but it gives to all those who take part a sentiment of God. Even starting each basketball game or football game with a simple prayer offers the same feeling...

Phil: At Trinity you learn Faith and morals you wouldn’t learn in other schools...it’s incredibly important that this happens for our generation.

Phil: When I took Fr. Hochhalter’s class, I noticed how it was preparing me to defend the Faith in the real world.

Phil: The experience of success and friendships at boys basketball regional championships...you feel close to everyone in the school. It is an incredible feeling.

Kelly: Do not let the tuition scare you...anyone can find the means to fund a private education...the fear can be taken away.

Kelly: I want my kids to attend school at Trinity because I want them to have an education where God can be a part of their daily, school life.

“It is an exciting time,” says Steve Glasser, President of Dickinson Catholic Schools as the sun beams in his office window on a blustery January day. Glasser recalls that he is quickly approaching the one-year mark of his time as president – for he was named president on January 31, 2014 and his first day “on the job” was February 21, 2014 – a mere ten days before the fire of March 3 destroyed the administrative hub of Trinity Junior High and High School

and left the school community wondering about it’s future. As he takes a few moments to reflect on the year 2014, with a gleam in his eye and a smile on his face he says, “…it was a year of hidden blessings. We have come a long way in a short period of time.”

In the fall of 2014, Dickinson Catholic Schools announced plans for the physical re-building of the junior high and high school, as well as the broader Master Plan of bringing Pre-K through grade

6 to the junior high and high school campus and sharing one building. “We are bringing the family together. I think the Master Plan, the concept we have created, really illustrates what we are about, our mission – educating the whole student – mind, body and soul. It’s what we stand for. It’s what makes us different,” said Glasser.

the academic spaces of the junior high and high school. Glasser said, “The different academic areas of our school will be grouped together for a better utilization of resources and a better structuring of curriculum. For example, the math and sciences will be together – in one area of the school.” The new science labs are a major component of the Master Plan, which includes a STEM/robotics lab (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and the potential for development of additional curriculum in that area. Casey Kessel, science teacher and BEST Robotics Advisor at Trinity Junior High and High School said, “A STEM lab will provide students the opportunity to

research math and science careers and activities. With the influx of opportunities in southwestern ND, it will give our students firsthand experiences in a whole host of fields that impact their

remarked Glasser. A fine and performing arts center is another major component of the Master Plan. Glasser continued, “Our auditorium space is second to none and is truly a cornerstone of our campus and the community at large. We want to add additional areas to that space – a set shop (for the building of sets for drama productions), dressing rooms, room for band and choir classes and rehearsals, faculty offices, storage and a black box – which is essentially a multi-function space that can be used for things ranging from small performances to meetings to special event dinners.” Janel Schiff, long-time Trinity High School English teacher, speech and drama coach said, “Enhancing our current facilities allows us additional opportunities and flexibility for our entire Fine Arts Department. The possibilities are truly exciting.”

The gymnasium will also be remodeled and added to as a part of the Master Plan, allowing more opportunities for development of curriculum in physical education and better space for athletic

practices, weight training and the hosting of tournaments. “When we have games going on in our main gym, we have to send all other teams to practice in various venues around town and scheduling of those locations and times becomes a tremendous challenge. With the addition and enhancement of gym space, all teams can have practice and games done by 9:00 PM. It would also allow teams to practice at the same time as games are going on in the other gym,” said Gregg Grinsteinner, long-time Trinity High School math

teacher, coach and high school athletic director.

Soul:“Christ must be at the

center of everything we do and everything we are about. The chapel of our school must be central as well,” said Glasser. The new chapel will have a seating capacity of 350 people, large enough for an all-school liturgy. Additionally, the religious studies classrooms and chaplain’s office will be in their own area of the school building. “Part of the duty and privilege of a Catholic school is forming our young people in the beauty and gift of our Catholic faith and its relevance for their life. Our faith is brought into everything we do,” said Glasser. Father Thomas Grafsgaard, Trinity High School Chaplain added, “At the core of Catholic education is the Catholic faith, and at the core of the Catholic faith is the Eucharist. A new chapel accommodated for our entire student body will be a tangible reminder of how seriously we take Catholic identity at Trinity Junior High

and High School.”As Dickinson Catholic

Schools embark on a new journey in the rebuilding of the school, Glasser points out that balance is the key. “Through the grace of God we are here now, looking back at 2014 and ahead at 2015 and the future years of Dickinson Catholic Schools with tremendous excitement and hope. We have to keep remembering, though, that we also need to provide the best education we can for our students today.”

Educating the whole student – mind, body, and soul: this is today’s guiding path, the mission, of Dickinson Catholic Schools and it is the light, the mission, illuminating her future.

Many Blessings to You and Your Family in 2015!

Amidst the frequent clamor and bustle reverberating within the walls of Trinity High School as the fall 2014 semester drew to a close, I noticed myself thinking more and more about what the past year had brought to me, but more importantly, to the school, students, and families that I have grown to love so dearly over these past several months.

Around this time last year, as a freshly ordained priest, I had finished my first semester of teaching at Bishop Ryan Catholic School in Minot, was settling comfortably into life as parochial vicar at St. Leo’s, and was eagerly waiting to get back into the classroom for another semester teaching what I love most. Now, a year later, 2015 has me in Dickinson, in a new parish at St. Wenceslaus (literally!), a new school (in the planning stages!), and in front of new students that I could not possibly love more. Not only that, but the year will begin with 59 of

our wonderful students traveling with me as pilgrims to Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life on January 22, followed immediately by my first experience of Mardi Gras at THS, and then by my first Catholic Schools’ Week as chaplain, featuring everything

from outstanding guest speakers to giant inflatable obstacle courses to Mass with Bishop Kagan. If that wasn’t enough, Trinity High School is hosting the annual State Know Your Faith competition that week on January 28, competing against the 3 other Catholic high schools in our state!

As the new year and the new semester begin at Trinity High School, I have come to know and to love the city of Dickinson and this school community! Mere words cannot possibly express my gratitude for your generosity to make the sacrifice to offer the gift of Catholic education to our dear young people. As I recently told my mother, “If it were not for the Catholic education you sacrificed so much to give to me, I wouldn’t want to know where I would be in life.”

Ad Iesum Per Mariam,Father Thomas J. Grafsgaard

Since then David has inspired more people to recognize the evil of abortion and it’s hidden cause, contraception. David led the first-ever 40 Days for Life campaign in College Station, Texas. The 40 Days for Life Campaign is now a world-wide movement, due in part to David’s leadership.

State Know Your Faith Competition Wednesday, January 2810:00 am ths gymnasiumThe Know Your Faith Competition—one of the great highlights of Catholic Schools’ Week for many Catholic school students around the state of North Dakota. This year, Trinity has the privilege of hosting our sister schools (Fargo Shanley, Bishop Ryan, and St. Mary’s Central) for the state competition. Come and witness the depth and breadth of knowledge our students have in the Catholic faith. Having a deep knowledge of the beauty of the Roman Catholic faith is one of the treasures our Catholic schools pass along to her students!

There may be no busier place than the Knights of Columbus Activities Center during the winter sports season, and the Trinity basketball teams are off and running with positive momentum heading into the heart of their region schedules.

In December, Coach Gregg Grinsteinner and the Titan boys claimed the Roughrider tournament championship with victories over Glen Ullin-Hebron, Heart River and New England. On January 6, the boys opened Region 7 play with a hard-fought 61-58 victory at home over state-ranked and previously unbeaten Hettinger-Scranton. The Titans are 4-4 at the time of this writing, with four narrow losses all coming to teams that have received votes in the North Dakota Sportscaster’s TopTen at some point in the year. Seniors Connor Friske, Joe Mayer, Brett Mortenson, Sam Sherer, Jon Volk and Cole Wilhelmi lead the 2014-2015 Titans.

Meanwhile, the Titan girls have rebounded from a 44-39 season opening loss to state-ranked Parshall to begin their year at 7-2 overall at the time of this writing. The Titans began Region 7 play at 2-0 with home victories over Hazen and Killdeer. Another highlight for the girls was a 54-41 victory in their December 13 home opener over previously unbeaten and #2 ranked Bismarck Shiloh Christian. Coach Carter Fong’s roster includes just one senior this year in Emily Spradley.

Trinity seniors Ryan Fahy (swimming), Jill Mueller (gymnastics) and Matt Pavek (hockey) help lead their respective teams in winter co-op sports with Dickinson High School. Mueller and the Dickinson High gymnasts are looking to defend their 2014 state championship.

Finally, the fall sports season ended with several Titan athletes receiving year-end awards. Katie Dockter and Kennedy Keator were named to the All-Region 7 Volleyball Team. The AA Football All-State Team included WR Joe Mayer on the first team, while Willy Jahner, Coltyn Nelson and Jacob Brooke received second-team nominations. The same quartet was also named All-Conference in the West Region, with honorable mention awards also going to Hunter Praus, Easton Brost, Jaret Lee and Zach Kubas.

We will soon celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week. Our theme this year is: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service. What an appropriate time to offer a few thoughts on how this year’s theme is lived out in our Dickinson Catholic Elementary Schools.

faith: The students’ faith grows throughout the school year by attending, planning, and participating in weekly mass as a school. The students partake in all the mass parts from singing, to reading, to serving, to bringing up the gifts, and praying.

Knowledge: The students receive instruction in the doctrine and strengthen their beliefs of the Catholic faith throughout their lessons. Faith is integrated in all aspects of every school day.

service: The students are committed to the service of others and enjoy doing so. Each month we pick a different charity to to help and for which we pray. One day out of the of the month, students have an out of uniform day. On this day they bring in donations in exchange for not having to wear a uniform. We suggest they bring a dollar, but our students and families are so giving, they usually bring more!

“In addition to the activity of Catholic Schools’ Week, it is time to start thinking about enrollment for the next school year. What a wonderful gift you can give your child-that of a Catholic school education. What a wonderful partnership we have - assisting parents as faith instructors of their children. Academics can be taught in any school, but human and faith formation is a bonus for those that attend Dickinson Catholic Schools. Faith is part of everything we do in the Catholic schools. please call me, JoLyn Tessier, with any questions, or to schedule a tour at 701.225.8094.

We chose to educate our daughter at DCS because we wanted more for her than just academics. We wanted the values that Christ teaches embedded during her school day as well. Our daughter is learning how to work with others with kindness and giving. We are so grateful to be able to turn to Dickinson Catholic Schools to help us.

We like DCS because of the familiar faces! All of the teachers know all of the students. We are impressed with the leaders and the future goals of DCS. “Hand in hand, with Christ we can!”

We love DCS because it is a family. Your child is not just a number, or one of the crowd, the teachers are truly invested in their students. We have seen time and time again where a staff member goes above and beyond to meet the needs of our children.

Honor roLL of donorsDickinson Catholic Schools (DCS) extends a heartfelt thank you to all who gave financial gifts to our schools in the calendar year 2014. 2014 was a year of challenges for the Titan family, but it was also a year of humbling generosity. Listed below are those who supported DCS’ mission - educating the whole student, mind, body and soul - through gifts to the Annual Fund, the DCS Foundation, Trinity Fire Relief Fund, and a whole host of other fundraising activities throughout the year. These gifts help ensure the future of Catholic education in southwestern ND. This Honor Roll of Donors is one small way we can show our appreciation to our generous supporters.

we appreciate your help.

The Lord truly works in mysterious ways, and sometimes, he can be incredibly poetic. While looking through the collection of Trinity High School yearbooks in my office I stumbled across one such mysteriously poetic instance.

In 1965, the first graduating class of Trinity High School published the school’s inaugural yearbook. The yearbook staff chose to use a drawing of an oak tree and an acorn on the book’s second page with the line “From the tiny acorn, comes the Mighty Oak” interspersed with images of the construction of the school, which was completed in 1961. The idea of a Catholic high school in Dickinson was the tiny acorn, and Trinity was the Mighty Oak that grew from it. Over the last five decades that Mighty Oak has borne great fruit. The students of Trinity High School, the acorns, have spread beyond the forest of Dickinson, to across the United States, and even the world, to

take root. But the fittingly symbolic nature of that second yearbook page from 1965 doesn’t end there.

In nature, oaks flourish after forest fires, natural and unnatural.

Fire releases nutrients bound in dead leaves and other plant debris into the soil, fertilizing the oak trees and clearing the ground to make it easier for acorns to take root. Trinity High School, our oak, has been through a fire, but she is still standing. Since the fire of March 2014, due to the work of many, the forest floor has been cleared and it is ready to accept the next acorn that will fall from our tree. And no doubt, just like in 1961, that acorn will take root, and grow into a new Mighty Oak.
