VDI answers to BYOD

"MPC thoroughly examined many different VDI solutions and narrowed them down to two final candidates - Microsoft and VMware solutions. Then, based on five years of performance benchmarking and TCO analysis, MPC chose the Microsoft VDI solution. We are now set to change our infrastructure still further thanks to the Microsoft solution, particularly in terms of the centralized-management of various user devices and server virtualization”

An officer from MPC

MPC, a specialist in contact center-based CRM, will, following the completion of the network isolation project, begin service from early 2014. The network isolation project was initiated by MPC in order to comply with the Personal Information Protection Act. As part of the project, MPC examined Microsoft, VMware, Red Hat and open source-based VDI solutions. After considerable due consideration, MPC ruled out Linux and open source-based solutions in view of the considerable care and attention they need when compared with to a solution supported by the vendor, . SituationWhile tThe network isolation service is

scheduled for launch by MPC in early 2014, with , the project that underpins the service was having been initially undertaken against the backdrop of a a tightened Personal Information Protection Act. As the Information and Communication Network Act and Personal Information Protection Act stipulate, compulsory isolation is compulsory between the desktops of those handling personal information from an exterior Internet network, . Ccompanies affected by the changes to the law have had to prepare themselves in order to fulfill their regulatory obligations. MPC, one such company, was quick to begin making preparations.

Between the choice of physical isolation and logical isolation, MPC chose the logical approach, primarily because physical network isolation seemed unfeasible, requiring as it did due to requiring significant additional work, including providing extra PCs. The logical approach, by contrast, allowed MPC to work on reviewing technological schemes - VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and CBC (Client Based Computing). MPC compared the advantages and disadvantages of two schemes and decided that VDI was the optimal choice, particularly in light of the planned implementation of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for smart work.

The next step for MPC was deciding which solution from among Microsoft, VMware, Linux and open source based VDI solutions would be the best for its network isolation project. Initial screening saw MPC narrow down the list to two candidates - Microsoft and VMware. Though Linux-

based VDI solutions require less initial investment than the others it considered, there was the worry that they would pose greater problems down the line due to the comparative lack of vendor support when it comes to the later implementation implementing of BYOD.

SolutionMicrosoft in the end had market

dominance was competitive over against VMware when it came to both on both performance and cost. MPC first found that Hyper-V was 1.5 to 2 times faster than vSphere through PoC. In terms of the type of the performance that users would actually experience, Microsoft RDP 8.8 was found to be significantly improved over both LAN and WAN. Advantageous cost-benefits, when added to the already more-than- and the satisfactory results achieved in the performance test, tipped the balance yet further in Microsoft's favor, such that with MPC was convinced evaluating that it was Microsoft who would best serve its purpose.

Microsoft did more than simply propose a VDI solution. In fact, it brought to the table all kinds of benefits realized when VDI is added to MPC’s desktop and account management infrastructure through integration with Active Directory. Sensing an opportunity, MPC decided to integrate its existing desktop management infrastructure and user management infrastructure into one. That is, MPC leveraged the network isolation project to improve the whole work environment, rather than just adding one new desktop to an already long-established environment. Moreover, MPC signed up to an EA to manage all kinds of software installed on

the desktop in a more efficient way, which worked to actually reduce licenseing fees.

Microsoft’s victory was capped off with the results of the TCO analysis which took account of everything, from infrastructure management to the software management system, in the changineg into to VDI. When cCompared to VMware, which charges extra for further upgrades and also adds a the cost of the software license cost for the virtualization solution, server and operating system, Microsoft VDI was advantageous in TCO.

MPC decided to work with Microsoft. Upon signing an EA, MPC established an Active Directory infrastructure and began carrying out the network isolation project with Windows Server, System Center and RDP-based VDI.

Benefits

Two birds, one stone - cCompliance with regulations and improved user convenienceRegardless of whether a physical or logical approach is adopted, network isolation is a recurrent source of inconvenience to users, not least because they have to work on shuttling between two environments. Companies themselves face the inconvenience problem of having to isolate their own networks in order to comply with the newly introduced enacted Personal Information Protection Act. MPC cast about for how to isolate its network with minimal inconvenience to users. The answer it found was from VDI. Next, it compared different VDI solutions with a focus on how to ensure the same user

experience in VDI as the physical desktop infrastructure. In the end, MPC went with Microsoft’s VDI solution.

Thanks to Microsoft’s dedication to users, MPC is does not expecting any complaints from users about regarding slow speeds in when using the virtual desktop to access an external network. Moreover, the fast speeds of RDP 8.0 over LAN and WAN are making it easier for MPC to ensure the better use of VDI over both LAN and WAN, essential due to its need to provide an outsourced service.

VDI answers to BYOD MPC expects to see considerable synergies from its adoption of Microsoft Windows Server and System Center together with its establishment of Active Directory infrastructure. Active Directory infrastructure is a vital part of the picture at MPC, as it means MPC can now achieve centralized management over all desktops used within the company and even various smart devices, if required. With the addition of System Center to manage the settings and security of each device, MPC is now ready to implement BYOD-based smart work.

With this project, MPC expects to bring about innovation into the way it works. Office 365 is the catalyst The starting point for that innovation is none other than Office 365, and which will be adopted once the current Gmail service from Google expires. In terms of cloud-based mail service, Office 365 will take its cloud-based mail service it to a whole new level. As Active Directory-based Office 365 can
