QUIÉNES SOMOSABOUT US

CARLOS MADRIDDIRECTOR

For the first leg of 2018 we have an academic and cultural calendar that begins with our offering of general Spanish language courses, details of which you will find within these pages.

Our cultural program opens with the collaboration of artists Wawi Navarroza and Nicolás Combarro. Their joint work will be part of the first celebration of Manila Biennale, which Instituto Cervantes de Manila and the Embassy of Spain in Manila are proud to support, also with the book launch of Perro Berde, the Fil-Hispanic cultural magazine in Spanish.

Curator Guillermo Paneque will be in Manila, as a special guest of the Embassy of Spain, to speak about his work in similar events held during the last Venice Biennale.

Cinema directed by women returns, as is the case every March, this time with our cycle Espacio Femenino, a series of films that will be screened at the Cinematheque of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

And like every year, our celebration of the International Book Day—alongside institutions and companies that share this mission of cultural dissemination and promotion—calls together, to the heart of Makati, all those who love reading, writing and literature in all its forms.

See you at Instituto Cervantes de Manila!

In response to Manila Biennale 2018 “Open City”, Filipino artist Wawi Navarroza and Spanish artist Nicolás Combarro present VISIBLE, a site-specific work bringing focus towards two presences very much alive surrounding Manila: local architecture (mostly self-constructed) and urban nature (spontaneous plant growth). The artists highlight these two rampant realities of the city, although often ignored, as a starting point for rethinking about our place in it.

VISIBLE can be seen at Plaza Moriones in Fort Santiago as a site-specific installation/sculpture/bricolage made with repurposed wood from past Intramuros dismantled buildings, and botanical samples transplanted from wild growth spurted from the walls of Intramuros, crevices of cement, the interstices and abandoned historical sites. Their photographic archive will also be presented in collages pasted outdoors.

WNC Projects is a collaboration between international contemporary artists Wawi Navarroza (Manila, Philippines) and Nicolás Combarro (Madrid, Spain) who have worked regularly since 2011 in various exchanges in photography: image, text, workshops, publications and exhibitions between Southeast Asia and Europe. Both Navarroza and Combarro see their artistic practices combine photography with intervention and installation, anchored with a backbone on research. Each active locally and globally, they work on immersive projects that involve the artistic/conceptual, as well as the organization, production and articulation of their works. They are also active as educators. In 2017, they have been selected as finalists for the WMA Commission, Hong Kong addressing the issue of Mobility in big cities.

CONFERENCIA / LECTURE:ARQUITECTURA Y RESISTENCIA

Architecture can be considered a form of construction, or alteration of the landscape, made by humans. Architecture of resistance refers to a form of

spontaneous construction where structural logic is mixed with cultural heritage. It is an architecture free to symbolize resistance to economic, social or political constraints. It also refers to traditional or vernacular constructions that stand the test of time despite having been forgotten or even reviled.”

St Valentine’s Day will see the Manila Biennale in Intramuros fall under the spell of Perro Berde, the only local Philippine-Spanish cultural magazine, with the launching of its 8th printed issue and third digital version. A more colorful equivalent of the English idiom “stranger than a three-headed dog”, the Spanish expression “más raro que un perro verde” is adopted with a Tagalog twist to give a name to this magazine as Perro Berde exemplifies the peculiarity and uniqueness of the fusion of two cultures. Published by the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the publication has provided a space for artists, writers and researchers from different countries since 2009. The presentation of the new edition of the magazine also serves as an excuse to discuss with professionals from the world of Philippine art the health of cultural publications in the Philippines. Moderated by Ringo Bunoan and Katya Guerrero from Artbooks.ph, this roundtable discussion will survey the recent history of Filipino art magazines published and their role in developing awareness about art.

As part of Art Fair Philippines, Spanish artist and curator Guillermo Paneque will discuss about some of the ideas behind his curatorial approach for the exhibition ZÓBEL.CONTRAPUNTOS, held during the latest Venice Biennial.

Guillermo Paneque is an artist who occasionally gets involved in curatorial projects. His curatorial approach is neither that of a scholar or an academic, rather is treated more as an extension of his own artistic practice.

He borrows the fluid and meandering methods of an anthropologist or a film director to capture social and psychological intersections in art and practice. In his work there is always a provocative and offbeat component.

He studied at the School of Fine Arts, University of Seville (1981-84). In 1983, he founded and directed the art magazine FIGURA. Showing regularly in galleries and museums since 1986, his work has been included in important group exhibitions at selected institutions such as: Kunstverein Hamburg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt,

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Musée d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; FRAC Rhone- Alpes, Lyon; Staatliche Kunsthalle, Berlin, and Museo Rufino Tamayo (México).

He studied film at New York University and ‘Film/Video Arts’ from 1995 to 1998, expanding his body of work and initiating a new philosophy towards his practice. Recognizing Paneque’s ability to critically observe aspects of society, in 2012 he was awarded the prestigious Fundación Botín Art Fellowship for EL REVÉS, a project to be conducted in southern Spain and Manila. In 2017 he curated the exhibition ZÓBEL. CONTRAPUNTOS, promoted by the Ayala Museum as one of the Official Collateral Events at the Venice Biennale.

BAMBOO ORGAN FESTIVAL

A Night of My Favorites.

The 43rd International Bamboo Organ Festival will run from 22-28 February 2018 at St. Joseph’s Church in Las Piñas. Concert programs for this season include “Sing to Him with Psalms… Italian Baroque Music” which will be performed on February 22 (Gala Night), 23 and 25. On February 24, the Festival offers “A Night of My Favorites” featuring Banda San Jose and an OPM artist. On February 26, Guy Bovet holds his “Organ Recital” both on the Bamboo Organ and on the Auditorium Organ, and on February 28 the venue shifts to the San Ezekiel Moreno Oratory (SEMO) for “The Splendor of Chorale Music 2” with works by V. Williams, Mendelssohn, Rutter, Palaruan, and Stanford to be performed. The Las Piñas Bamboo Organ in St. Joseph Parish Church in Las Piñas City, Philippines, is a 19th-century church organ with unique organ pipes; they are made almost entirely of bamboo. It was completed in 1824 by Spanish Father Diego Cera, the builder of the town's stone church and its first resident Catholic parish priest.

The cinema directed by women has found a sound place of stability in the Spanish film scene –although a certain situation of inferiority is still detected when analyzing the female presence in the artistic and technical professions in this field. "Espacio femenino" is a program of Instituto Cervantes aimed at highlighting the presence of women in the Spanish film industry. In this edition, several recent feature and shorts films will provide different approaches to both formats.
