Cobaw State Forest Trip

February 14th to 17th 2013

Trip Participants:

Trip leaders Terry & Anne Benson - GU Patrol Ute Mark, Michelle and Steph Liddle - Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series

Terry & Linda Curran - Toyota Land Cruiser 76 Series Dual Cab Ute.

Friday 14th Three vehicles from our club set off at various times. Anne and I left

about 3.00 pm, planning to rendezvous with our hosts from Swan Hill 4WD Club. The Liddles left earlier to catch up and spend the night with

friends at Macedon. The Currans left after work and joined us at our campsite later that evening.

Anne and I were nearing the turn off the freeway at Carlsruhe when my mo-

bile rang. Rudgy from Swan Hill club was enquiring of our whereabouts. He

and fellow Swan Hill Club members Lindsey and Cynthia had arrived at our

rendezvous point one minute before us. After a quick hello chat we headed off

down the three chain road and into the Cobaw State Forest. We made camp in

a clearing off Kelly’s Road. We had just finished setting up our camping trailer

when we got a call from the Currans letting us know that they were about a

half an hour away from the Carlsruhe

BP servo. So Anne and I back tracked out of the forest to guide them to our

camp. We had had a big day so it was off to bed to await the morning.

The morning was bright and sunny. All of the stormy weather of the

previous evening had disappeared. After breakfast the phone rang. It was Mark letting us know that he was at the BP servo. So once again

Anne and I headed off again and met up with the Liddles. By the time we got back to camp everybody was ready for our first excursion into

the tracks of the Cobaw State Forest.

Rod was the only one who had been in the Cobaw three years previ-ously. His memory was pretty good as he took us for an easy going

drive first up. Cynthia and Lindsey led because Cynthia was a good navigator and Rod knew he would be kept busy just driving. The first

track tackled was “Greenways” which looped around and joined up with Croziers Track. There were a few tight spots maneuvering

through trees etc.

The highlight of the morning was when Mark got stuck driving through

a benign puddle which turned out to be a deep bog

hole. It was good to be on the right end of a snatch

strap for once. These two tracks would later be rated

as easy. We came out of Croziers track opposite our

camp right on smoko time. How convenient.

After our break we headed

down Kelly’s Road until we came to Pope Track. This

track was more what we

were hoping for with washa-ways and rocky sections. Eventually this led us onto Soil Pit Track. The

further we went the tracks became more difficult and enjoyable. As we headed back to camp I was wondering what the tracks after lunch

would offer. It would appear that these tracks have had no mainte-nance since the end of the drought.

Report by Terry Benson.

Saturday 15th - afternoon

After a refreshing lunch stop back at camp, it was clear the morning’s tracks had wetted everyone’s appetite for some more adventure be-

cause as soon as Rudgy called time to leave, everyone was quick to load up, obviously keen to get back out on the tracks. Lindsay and

Cynthia took the lead with Beno acting as tail end Charlie.

Leaving camp we travelled a short way down Reilly’s Road and turned off up Camp Track and then did a loop around on the North End of Soil

Pit track. The scenery was beautiful, the lush undergrowth making the tracks narrow, necessitating a slow and easy pace but this gave us

time to soak in the scenery. We made our way back onto Reilly’s Road and attempted to make our way up Reilly’s Fire line Track. How-

ever the track was particularly overgrown and difficult to navigate so the decision was made to turn around. Back on Reilly’s Road the Cur-

ran’s elected to go back to camp and spend some time with their

daughter Alana and her boyfriend Dale who had driven up from Mel-bourne to join them for the weekend.

The Benson’s took the lead and took

us up Devanney Road to the loop of Stumpy Track. We negotiated the

lower part of Stumpy Track, enjoying some challenging but enjoyable obsta-

cles. Crossing Reilly’s Road we at-tempted to do the top end of Stumpy

Track but due to an impassable sec-tion where the track ran out we were

forced to turn back.

Lindsay and Cynthia once again took

the lead and the we made our way along Pole Track and to the South end

of Soil Pit Track. Many of the guides rate this part of the track as one of

the “challenging must do” tracks in the area. We were not disappointed

as Soil Pit Track proved to be ex-

tremely challenging. On arrival

we were presented with a steep rocky climb that was loose and

sandy in patches. Another section was particularly chal-

lenging as it had deep ruts, a tree with exposed tree roots on

one side and a rather large rock just in the wrong place oppo-

site. This set of obstacles was quite imposing and we were not

sure whether we would be able to negotiate our way through

the section.

Lindsay and Cynthia led the

charge and their trusty Patrol did not let them down clawing

its way over the tough terrain making it to the top. Beno was

next with some skillful driving and the assistance of his new

front wheel lokka’s working their magic, he negotiated the

tricky terrain. The Patrol got a wheel in the air due to the ruts and leant over towards the large rock,

but in the end Beno comfortably made his way to the top of the climb.

Encouraged by this effort, we attempted the climb. Our 200 series be-ing the only vehicle without locking diffs, plus being somewhat wider

than the rest of the trucks ensured that our assent was very challeng-

ing. With Beno spotting for us it still took three attempts before we could get the wheels in the right place to get traction while clearing

the large rock and the tree on the other side. In the end, a liberal dose of right foot was required to encourage the 200 to climb over the

slippery roots.

Rudgy attacked the climb with his usual gusto and the trusty patrol

leapt over the obstacles as he powered his way to the top. One by one everyone made our way to the top and there were big smiles all

round as it had been a very challenging but exhilarating experience.

We had a short break at the top to celebrate our success at conquer-ing the climb before successfully making the challenging descent. We

finished off the afternoon by navigating Pole Track and part of the R.P.C. Track on our way back to camp. Pole Track was relatively easy

but still had a couple of tricky sections with some big ruts just to keep us on our toes. It was a big day and we were all tired but wearing

broad smiles as we pulled into camp eagerly anticipating the “refreshments” and the chance to chat about the highlights of the

day. Report by Mark Liddle.

Sunday 15th - morning We got up slowly, Swan Hill mem-

bers were all packed up and ready by the time we ventured out and

made breakfast.

The first track was easy, very pic-turesque. Then it led to another

track showing water damage on the sides of the track. The rocks were

extremely large. Cynthia once again did a great job of directing

everyone through the difficult sec-tion. Appropriate wheel placement

was necessary so no mishap oc-

curred. It certainly put the drivers through their paces. The Patrol

wagon was the first caught up and was winched backwards, the tree

root was just in the wrong place. Then Terry’s Patrol ute got

stuck, an inch either way and he would have got through. The Air

Jack came into play but a maverick bolt under the vehicle did its job

and put a hole in it, so that ended the car jack. We ended up going up a rock track which was easier than coming down the track. Alt-

hough the going was slow, it was great to see the support and assis-tance given when navigating the rough passages.

We returned to camp around 1.00 pm, packed up and headed for

home. We lunched in Kyneton with Alana and Dale. Mark, Michelle and Stephanie lunched at the servo and headed straight home. Swan

Hill members and Beno and Anne had lunch at camp and headed for home.

We met up with Beno and Anne in Inglewood getting fuel. We got a

cold drink and then headed home. Once again, a stop at Ouyen was required as it had been a long day. Beno called into Carwarp and

showed us the huge Almond Shed and the solar panels. It was a great

trip and everyone enjoyed themselves although our vehicles did suffer some damage. Thanks to the Swan Hill group and everyone else on

the trip. Report by Terry and Linda Curran

Riverland Interclub 4wd Trip Report

Sat 9th Sunday 10th & Monday 11thMarch 2013 4WD Clubs in Attendance....Riverland .... Murray Bridge .... Mildura

Four vehicles made the trip to Gurra to participate in a three club

get together. Currans, Liddles, Ted Lodge & Bensons arrived at

the Gurra camp ground about 11.00 am central SA time. We set up camp on a sandy spot close to the water’s edge. The river had

a firm base and was shallow; you had to walk out ten metres be-fore it was waist deep. As the weather was hot, swimming was a

popular past time.

The schedule for Saturday ar-vo was a trip to Loveday 4wd

Adventure Park. About four-teen vehicles headed off to

participate. Most enjoyed the trip around the loop tracks

without too many dramas and a few had a go at the more

difficult hazards. Back at

camp, most folk were enjoying a swim and after dinner that

night, we all sat around chat-ting till quite late.

The next day because of the expected high temperature forecast

the trip to Danggali was abandoned. Our group elected to have a play on the sand dunes near the camp. After being joined by

three Riverland club members, we headed off to get acquainted with the nearby Murray River National Park which featured Kata-

rapko Creek which broke off from the river below Lock 4 and re-joined about twenty kilometres downstream This park is a real

gem for campers, fishermen and kayakers. We returned about five pm and enjoyed another swim before dinner and then more

socializing into the night.

The next morning, the Currans headed for Adelaide. Ted wanted to

get home early enough to see his grandchildren before he started work but Robo convinced him to come and play on the sandhills in

his worked over truck so who knows what time he finally got home. Mark, Michelle and Steph joined Anne and myself on a leisurely trip

down to Murtho, then continued home on the Old Renmark Mail Road. We all had a great week end. Thank you to the Riverland
