In coordination with its Global Defense Clients, Metrodata manufactures products that can enhance network enabled capability and offer seamless end-to-end capabilities. Metrodata products are used in critical backbone applications as well as bringing in evolving network access capabilities and enabling COTS C4i tech-nology into future force networks.

Where Metrodata truly provide a major transformational capability is when interfacing terrestrial equipment to Satcom, Crypto and Microwave.

Metrodata have over 300 products designed to resolve issues of interfacing speeds, protocols and modes of operation, all developed from End User requirements.

OPTIMISE YOUR NETWORK 1bit/s granularity on EIA530 from 8kbit/s up to 20Mbit/s, and HSSI up to 110Mbit/s

OPTIMISE YOUR SATCOM BANDWIDTH Asymmetric, Uni Directional or Full Duplex operation

REDUCE DOWNTIME Automatic Crypto Resynchronisation

DEPLOY SATCOM TERMINALS QUICKER Automatic Data Rate Adjust

Current communications networks provide an inflexible backbone, and this is further exposed by having bandwidth constraints and interoperability issues at the tactical level. Metrodata have products from 8kbit/s to 622Mbit/s, in effect removing most constraints of bandwidth that could be applied at a tactical and back-bone level. When linking to terrestrial Defense architectures we have a wide range of interfaces to support all common interfaces including ATM, IP, Frame Relay, Voice, LAN, IP, SDH, SONET, DS1, T1, E1, E2, E3, DS3, OC-3, STM-1, OC-12, STM-4, EIA644, LVDS, EIA530, X.21, V.35, HSSI, G.703, ASI, ECL and Fiber.

ABOUT METRODATA

TODAYS MOST FLEXIBLE ENCRYPTION SOLUTION JUST GOT MORE FLEXIBLE

With the new KIV-7M there is the capability to go to 51.84Mbits utilising its LVDS/EIA644 interface, which is not the typical type of interface found on routers, switches or fiber optic modems. Whilst LVDS Satellite Modems do exist, HSSI is the more prevalent interface. LVDS might place constraints on your network topology, network data rates and network mode of operation but...NOT IF YOU CONTACT METRODATA….as we already support this interface on a variety of encryption equipment interfacing products.

Providing Complete Flexibility Of Both Data Rate, Serial Interface and ATM interface Whilst working on a Defense network project, Metrodata realized that what was needed was complete flexibility of data rate. We had for some time been getting enquiries for EIA530 and HSSI to DS-3 ATM Conversion. All of these were at very "odd" data rates. Typically they would require 1kbit/s or 1bit/s clock increments, ie 9.163Mbits Inbound and 322.231kbits Outbound.

Metrodata provide the capability to tailor the ATM network to the Applications odd data rate, rather than forcing the Application to run at a fixed rate on the network. This means:

• More bandwidth by saturating your transponder with exact amounts of data

• Less Wastage, by using the satellite capacity you have paid for

• More efficient network topology

Utilizing Metrodata Products within a tactical/federal environment can ensure that data integrity is improved as we allow accurate and exact clocking of each piece of network hardware. How can a network be clocked correctly if there is a limit of Nx64k data rates on the hardware within the end-to-end solution.

DEFENSE CLIENTS

Defense Applications and requirements can range from low-bandwidth bi-directional, secure voice communications to high data rate broadcast imagery from the new generation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles such as Global Hawk. Combine with this the legacy TDM Networks, existing Trunk and Bulk Encryption Devices and emerging technologies in the Tactical network space and the Access Point must be highly flexible in bitrate and mode of opera-tion, whilst being scalable enough to support future Warfighting capabilities. With our extensive portfolio of COTS interface, speed and protocol converters we are able to provide connectivity between:

ATM Switches, ATM Access Devices and ATM Concentrators

Low Speed Synchronous Serial Equipment - Cryptographic Equipment

Any speed Serial Satellite Modems

ATM Encrypters

Serial Encrypters

Fiber Optic Modems

Routers and SDH/Sonet Muxes

These are the "Building Blocks" of Global Communication Networks. These are inherent in almost all tactical/military and commercial satellite systems. Often these "Blocks" cannot be fitted together, because of an incompatibility between their interfaces, protocols or clock/data rates. This is where Metrodata can help. Metrodata products basically provides the "cement" between the Blocks, removing interface connectivity issues, optimizing the use of specific protocols and resolving clocking problems.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

JOINT TASK FORCE EXERCISE 05-02 U.S. and Coalition joint forces man the Joint Operations Center aboard the U.S. Second Fleet flagship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) underway in the Western Atlantic during Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) 05-2.

Metrodata provided ATM Over Serial capability for connecting ATM Switches Over Serial Satellite Modems. Also utilized was the Automatic Crypto Resync feature Metrodata developed for Naval Warfare Development Command (NWDC), to resynchronize Cryptographic Equipment as the ships moved in and out of SATCOM footprint.

NASA As part of NASA's EOS series of satellites, Landsat 7 provides a unique suite of medium-resolution observations of the terrestrial environment. These observations allow for investigations into the causes of land-surface change.

GLOBAL HAWK The Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) provides Air Force and joint battlefield commanders near-real-time, high-resolution, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance imagery. In the last year, the Global Hawk provided Air Force and joint warfighting commanders more than 15,000 of these images to support Operation Enduring Freedom, flying more than 50 missions and 1,000 combat hours to date.

MILLENIUM CHALLENGE 2002 Millennium Challenge 2002 (MC02) brought together both live field exercises and computer simulation July 24-Aug. 15, 2002. Sponsored by U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM), MC02 represented a critical building block of future military transformation.

MC02 incorporated elements of ALL military services, most functional/regional commands and many DoD organizations and federal agencies.

Metrodata provided interfacing from the COTS C4i suite to the SATCOMS equipment for Encrypted ATM Over Satellite. This included the Command Ship and also the Joint Army / Navy High Speed Vessel HSV-2

Metrodata provide remoting capability for the Global Hawk by transporting serial control and data / video signals from the remote transportable satellite terminal, over Fiber / ATM / WAN to the control site. To ensure exact clocking and odd data rate support we developed a Serial interface that can operate in 1bit/s increments from 8kbit/s to 20Mbit/s and in Asymmetric, Uni Directional or Full Duplex mode. Metrodata worked with MITRE, L-3, Raytheon and Ryan Aero on this project.

Metrodata provided equipment for interfacing High Speed Serial Interface [HSSI] at rates in excess of 51.84Mbit/s, from the Satellite Modems at Verestar’s Teleport in Holmdel New Jersey to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center [GSFC]. This was transported over AT&T OC-3 ATM Network. Metrodata increased the allowed bitrate on the Satellite and subsequently increased resolution of the imagery.

AUTOMATIC CRYPTO RESYNC

The Metrodata AP3000 Access Concentrator has been recently utilized as an ATM Cell Bearing Serial Interface Converter by the Naval Warfare Development Command. In order to enhance speed and agility of operations, an Automatic Crypto Resync feature was added to the APSAT Platform.

“We appreciate all the work you guys put into this in the short time period that we had. It was quite a sight watching the resyn-chronization work as the ship transitioned in and out of SATCOM coverage.”
