“The greatest female artist of the 20th century? The most influential artist of the last 50 years?” The Guardian

A major new exhibition of the great American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), cited by the Guardian as “the last great surrealist”. This show focuses on a new ARTIST ROOMS collection featuring many of her later works including sculpture, painting and prints. It reveals how Bourgeois, working in a variety of materials and scales, explores the mystery and beauty of human emotions. Through recurring motifs such as spiders, spirals and human forms, her deeply personal and moving works examine vulnerability, friendship, fear, death, motherhood, sexuality and love.

The works on display are taken from ARTIST ROOMS, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art acquired for the nation. mima is an ARTIST ROOMS Associate and is delighted to be the first Associate to show this Louise Bourgeois exhibition on tour, following a successful exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

“It wasn’t until I saw Louise Bourgeois’ work in person for the first time that I fully understood its beauty.” Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art visitor comment.

The mima team and one of our young people’s groups are working to offer a fresh and engaging perspective to the exhibition.

Through the generous support of the Art Fund and Arts Council England, ARTIST ROOMS has provided additional funding for the learning programme at mima.

chance finds us2 May – 4 september

An exhibition that looks at the works of eight artists living and working in North East England. The artists have their own distinctive practice and the work ranges from pencil drawings, paintings and sculptures to art made using automated drawing machines. Although the individual artists’ works look very different, they are connected by similar themes to do with systematic or ritualistic approaches.

The exhibition has been co-curated by Anne Vibeke Mou, Nick Kennedy and mima. Many of the artists in the exhibition have exhibited across the UK and internationally: James Hugonin has works in Tate’s and mima’s collections, whilst others represent a new generation of artists emerging from the North East. The artists included in the show are Sarah Bray, Alex Charrington, Rachael Clewlow, Peter J. Evans,

As Lipman artist in residence at Newcastle University, William Cobbing has been developing new works featuring the imprint of letterpress blocks into malleable clay surfaces. Words appear and are then distorted through the act of reworking the surface. The Northumberland countryside provides the background for a surrealist video that documents a firing of a bell and a golem-like figure, and a series of sculptures echoes the eroded contours of the monolithic Duddo Five Stones.

Wendy raMshaW rooMs of dreaMs 12 september – 4 december

As one of Britain’s leading contemporary designers, Wendy Ramshaw CBE is renowned for her jewellery and distinctive, large-scale public art. This major exhibition shows key pieces spanning fifty years of her acclaimed career from her early jewellery in paper and plastic, through jewels in precious metals, stone, glass and ceramic, to a series of images and maquettes representing her public art commissions. Her work is held in mima’s collection as well as those of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Art and Design, New York. Pa

Derek Eland is a multi-media artist whose work focuses on what it is like to ‘be human’ in stressful and difficult situations. Diary Rooms is the result of Derek Eland’s time as an official war artist in Afghanistan in 2011. He circulated blank cards to British and Afghan soldiers for them to write down their thoughts: these moving testimonies are displayed alongside photographs and video.

ha[soft]rdIn 2012, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva was appointed as Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award (ARMA) Artist in Residence at mima. She has produced a new site-specific sound sculpture for mima’s garden. Elpida worked closely with mima’s Creative Apprentices as well as local communities and businesses to capture memories of Middlesbrough. HA[SOFT]RD stands tall like a machined jewel using industrial parts and materials that reflect the town’s local economy and recent business growth. See www.visitmima.com/whats-on for more information.

MiMa’s buildinGAs well as exploring the building itself, designed by Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects, you can admire several works of art incorporated into the building. Going up the Italian slate and Turkish limestone staircase, look out for the gold leaf wall drawing by 2009 Turner Prize-winning artist Richard Wright. On the third floor, in the corridor to the event space usually used for private events (see page 15), is another original artist commission – Michael Rowe’s light installation was created to animate the corridors. Pick up our free architecture guide for more information. We aim to have a work or works from our collection on display in the public areas of the building, as well as a drawing from our life drawing classes on the ground floor.

MiMa’s collectionmima’s collection of around 2,500 artworks (fine art, ceramics and jewellery) are stored at mima. As well as the work on display in the public areas and any works included in exhibitions – or from October in the new jewellery gallery – the collections are often available to view on one of our Behind the Scenes Tours (see page 13) or by appointment: our full collection is also listed on our website and work is ongoing to put images of all the works online.

neW JeWellery Gallery opening saturday 4 october

mima has an outstanding collection of contemporary jewellery, one of the finest publicly-owned jewellery collections in the UK, to rival those of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the National Galleries of Scotland. Featuring beautiful, provocative and fascinating pieces, the collection has not previously been on permanent display. That is set to change. mima and Teesside University, in a joint project, are currently converting a space that was previously a storeroom into a purpose-built gallery for the collection. As well as the exciting new display and accompanying education and events programmes, mima and Teesside University have appointed two jewellers in residence, Janet Hinchliffe McCutcheon and Gemma Draper, who will be leading masterclasses and workshops. For updates on the progress of the building project, linked events and workshops, see www.visitmima.com/jewellery.
