HIMACHALOne of the most beautiful regions of India, this 'Dev Bhumi' or the land of the Gods encompasses

extremes, from the dry, high-altitude deserts of Lahaul-Spiti to the verdant greens of Shimla and around.

Expect apple orchards, pine and deodar forests, gentle terrace farms and the brilliant vista of the snow-

    capped mountains all around.

ShimlaThis charming town is a curious mingling of grand colonial structures with temple-topped hills and bustling bazaars. Shimla offers awesomeviews of the snow capped mountains and on a clear day, you can spend hours staring at the peaks, changing colour as the day ends. There is

no better way of enjoying the mountains than trekking. Shimla offers numerous trekking routes that last from one day to a week-long

sojourn. The town is also ideal as a starting point for trips to places such as Mashobra, Kasauli and Chail or destinations farther away such as

    Kullu, Manali, Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh.

ManaliManali lies at the foot of the snow peaks, in the lap of the Kullu valley. Standing at a height of 2,050 metres, its beauty is heightened by the

Beas River that flows through it. A glorious summer retreat away from the scorching heat of the plains, Manali is a veritable 'Valley of the Gods'.

Apart from its amazing snowfields, Manali also has lovely apple orchards and is a popular honeymoon destination. For the more adventurous,

Manali offers skiing, hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, trekking and mountain biking options.

DharamshalaDharamshala is a heady concoction of fresh mountain air, the aroma of pines, vibes of Buddhist prayers, colours of Tibetan people and the

scent of mouth-watering delights. Monks in maroon can be seen strolling down the mountain roads here. Although the town has a strong

Tibetan flavor, one can also see hints of a colonial, English past. The colourful temples and gompas reflect a rich Tibetan culture, while the

Museum of Kangra Art in lower Dharamshala offers an insight into the heritage of the region. Numerous institutes work towards preserving

the art, culture and traditions of Tibet as well.

DalhousiePine trees proliferate in Dalhousie as do Raj-era bungalows and Victorian churches. The town was founded in the 1850s by Lord Dalhousie

looking to escape from the merciless heat of Indian plains. Today, this relaxed and peaceful hamlet seems to be nursing a colonial hangover,

with the old world air still clinging to it. It abounds in beautiful views of the Dhauladhar snow range, of the sweeping views of the plains, of

the serpentine Ravi, Beas and Chenab rivers flowing in the distance. Come to Dalhousie for cheery picnics and gentle strolls under the

    deodars.

KasauliThe quiet little cantonment town of Kasauli nestles in the Himalayas midway between Chandigarh and Shimla. Developed as a hill station by

the British in the mid-19th century, it has managed to retain a colonial air. All around you are forested hills, quaint cottages, nature trails and

the chirping of birds. In the town you can walk around the remnants of past glory like the heritage Kasauli Club and the Christ Church. It is an

ideal getaway for those looking for gentle solitude.
