    SCOTLAND: A LAND OF CONTRASTS

Scotland provides superb opportunities to enjoy wild and grand scenery which is even more impressive

than the postcards suggest. It also offers towns and cities with a rich cultural life, a good mix of

accommodation and places to eat and drink. Friendly and welcoming, it is an interesting and colourful

all-season destination, where landscapes and the environment, sport and leisure pursuits, heritage and

history, culture and cuisine are all part of a rewarding experience.

The best reason for choosing to go on holiday to Scotland is this: is one of the last places inside the

crowded and frenetic European Union where it is possible to be alone isolated countryside. This is not

to say that Scotland, like everywhere else, does not have its tourist traps, its crowded roads or its

popular beauty spots. But it is relatively easy to escape from them.

It would be a mistake to think that Scotland is merely an extension of England. Indeed, no attitude is

capable of causing greater offence to the Scots. They successfully resisted English attempts at

domination for seven hundred years, and many differences between the two countries persist.

Scotland's history, embodied in its castles, battlefields, and ancient links with France, Flanders and

    Scandinavia, is special.

    1. Scotland is ...

    a) full of lively towns and cities.

    b) similar to many other countries in Europe.

    c) as impressive as postcards suggest.

    d) disappointing

    2. In Scotland, tourists ...

    a) are always alone in the country.

    b) can easily get away from crowds and traffic.

    c) get trapped in popular beauty spots.

    d) cant enjoy the countryside because of the traffic.

    3. When you say that Scotland is like England, the Scottish ...a) feel insulted.

    b) agree.

    c) are amused.

    d) dont mind

    4. Scotland ...

    a) was dominated by England for seven hundred years.

    b) dominated England for seven hundred years.

    c. kept out English invaders for seven hundred years.

    d) was never attacked by England.

    LISTENING - SCRIPT

Presenter The world of fashion looks exciting, but is it? Lucy Stewart is a

fashion stylist and often works with celebrities like 1Will Smith and

Angelina Jolie. Lucy, what do you do?

Lucy Well, as a fashion stylist,I help people with their image, particularly

their clothes. 2They may want to look like a rock star, with skin-tight leather trousers and black tops, or maybe theyd prefer to look

more relaxed and casual, with comfortable, baggy clothes and lots of

sportswear. I help them to get the style they want.

Presenter Where do you find the clothes?

Lucy 3I mainly buy them from designer shops, but sometimes I find them

in second-hand stores you often get the most interesting clothes

    4there!

Presenter Whats it like working with celebrities?

Lucy It depends! Some are really nice. Will Smith was lovely. But 5others

are very vain they try on hundreds of clothes before they makea decision. And if they dont like anything, I have to take it all back to

    the shop and start again.

Presenter What type of clothes do celebrities usually like?

Lucy 6Expensive clothes! But these dont always look the best. Sometimes I

buy clothes from high-street stores because theyre actually nicer

than the ones the designers are selling. Of course, all stars want to

look good and have their pictures in the news. 7Pop stars like Pink

often wear shocking clothes, whereas actresses such as Gwyneth

Paltrow often prefer a more sophisticated look.

and I get free clothes. I also make a lot of money.

    Presenter And the disadvantages?

Lucy I always have to dress well, and I dont 9have much time to relax.

10Im at work 24 hours a day. If a client called me at 1 a.m.

from an airport, Id have to go and see them. I dont have much

    time for myself!
