For centuries, coffee has caused much stir over health impacts, good or bad, with many people resigned to accept it as a guilty pleasure. However, since 1990’s science now appreciates its virtues a generally health drink for adults with cautions for pregnant women and those with caffeine sensitivity and sleeping disorders. Reasonable consumption of coffee minus the sugar and creamer can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle.

Among all marine lives out there, I am fascinated by three marine lives. They are the killer whales, sharks and dolphins. Both the whales and sharks are natural hunters although the latter is much ruthless despite being inferior in size. On the other hand, dolphins are easier to train and today are found in parks to entertain people.

According to a University of Cincinnati survey, 98% of us have had a song stuck in our heads to an irritating degree. The tunes tend to be simple with a repeating melody or motif, which triggers the brain to repeat it on its own. Musicians and obsessive people are particularly vulnerable to sticky songs.

While one respondent claimed he has had the same video-game tune in his head since 1986, 63% said they are able to break the chain by turning on the radio, reading aloud or even singing the songs to others.

6 Based on the survey, we can conclude that people want to break the chain because

A the sticky songs phenomenon is annoying.

B those who listen to music are taking a risk.

C they prefer to listen to the songs from the radio.

D the songs that stay in their heads are simple tunes.

When Malaysian writers make a name for themselves abroad, it is usually for meditative, literary or historical novels, often set in Malaysia.

Back home, meanwhile, most Malaysians seem to favour politics-centred non-fiction. None of these are likely to

I was showing a house to prospective buyers on the morning when my mobile phone rang with the news that Tommie had gone missing in the woods behind his home. I was not worried because Tommie was like a home pigeon. I was certain he would show up any moment, a sheepish grin on his face.

Tommie is my 26-year-old stepson: tall, dark and handsome. He is a wonderful and special young man. He is autistic. When his father, Jack, and I met, Tommie was part of the package: Loving Tommie was a non-negotiable prerequisite to marriage. Fortunately, that was not hard to do.

When the young man entered my life, we formed an immediate and lasting bond. Tommie lives in his own home but requires 24-hour supervision. Like many people with autism, Tommie loves his home. His footsteps going home are

always much quicker than those leading away. His sense of direction is exact, and he usually leads the way on his daily walks with his care workers.

But not long ago Tommie had been diagnosed with epilepsy. Medication for the prevention of the dangerous seizures was an unfortunate necessity, but the ongoing search for the correct dosage had resulted in increasingly unpredictable behaviour. On the morning he went missing, Tommie was hiking the familiar mountain paths behind his home. Unexpectedly, he became agitated and ran off. His care workers lost sight of him but were certain that Tommie, as in the past, would be waiting on his front veranda. But this time, something went wrong. Tommie was lost.

By the time Jack and I arrived, the care workers began to gather some neighbours to start the search. We were certain that once we started hiking the mountainsides, Tommie would respond to our calls. I felt relieved when we were told that a police helicopter was on its way.

However, as we started hiking through the bush, it quickly became obvious to us how easily a person could get turned around. The terrain above Tommie’s house is steep and wooded, and the mountain ridges become a plateau that goes on for kilometres. The care workers combed the plateau for two hours but to no avail. Tommie could be anywhere.

That afternoon, search-and-rescue teams began to arrive, and a police victim-services unit set up camp. But all too quickly it turned dark, and the search was called off for the night. Jack and I were ordered home, but how could we sleep? We walked the neighbourhood, calling into backyards, hoping that Tommie was close by and simply frightened by all the commotion. We drove the back roads and the logging trails, shining out lights into the bush and calling his name into the quiet night until we were hoarse and exhausted.

A local radio station made repeat broadcasts of Tommie’s description, and the call went out for volunteers for the search. The next morning we got the firsthand look at what our community, Williams Lake, British Columbia, was made of. A command centre had been set up at the base of the mountain. Before the sun set up that morning, an army of volunteers waited at the cul-de-sac in front of the house. They came on mountain bikes and horseback. They walked the search grid with us on steep terrain and in dense bush. But as the community cooperated in the intensive search effort, the weather did not. Heavy rain and storms impeded the search. Temperatures at night dropped to almost freezing. Tommie was out there, somewhere, in a light jacket with no food – worse yet – no medication. Time was not on his side.

The second day, the search fanned out. The lake’s shore was combed both from the land and in boats. Again we came up blank, though we waited hopefully as each team reported in. On the third day, we went up to the top of the mountain, then fanned out, arm’s length apart, straight down to the bottom. We advanced slowly, the team leader’s walkie-talkie screeching down the line.

“Stop.” And then, “There’s someone here!”

“Hold the line,” the walkie-talkies squawked. My heart stopped as we waited for confirmation that it was Tommie. Then, “It’s him; he’s alive!” Tired, hungry and confused, but alive. Tommy was sitting, warming himself in the breaking sun, on the side of the mountain as if he had been waiting for us.

Are you still playing your flute? In the village so quiet and desertedAmidst the sick rice fieldsWhile here it has become a luxury
