Let Them Lie: On-shore rest is vital for the survival of seals and turtles. Stay at least 50 feet away. (16-USC-chapter 31 & HR§195D-4)Call NOAA’s Emergency Hotline: 1-888-256-9840 to report stranded or injured whales, dolphins, seals or turtles.
Born On the Beach:Honu and ‘ea (green and hawksbill sea turtles) lay their eggs, and their hatchlings start life, by crawling through the sands of our favorite beaches. The coastline is also home to dozens of other creatures. Its up to all of us to keep the nursery clean: pack-out all “organic” wastes (peels, seeds, rinds, etc), pet feces, cigarette butts and even trash left by careless others. The sand-nursery is one of many reasons why OPEN FIRES AND CAMPING ARE PROHIBITED AT ALL OF THE AREAS SHOWN ON THIS MAP. (HAR§13-209-4 & HAR§13-130-21)
Fishing is allowed at all these sites, EXCEPT‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u Natural Area Reserve. (HAR§13-209-4)
Dogs are welcome, if leashed, at all these sites EXCEPT ‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u Natural Area Reserve. Always pack out their waste. (HAR§13-209-4 & MCC13.04A.070D)
‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u Natural Area Reserve and Mākena State Park are NO-FLY ZONES for drones. (HAR§13-209-4 & HAR§146-13-9)
Hoapili Trail and the trail at Kanahena are for foot-traffic only: BICYCLES ARE PROHIBITED. (HAR§13-130-19 & HAR§13-209-4)
SMOKING IS PROHIBITED AT ALL COUNTY PARK SITES AND MĀKENA STATE PARK. ALCOHOL IS PROHIBITED AT SOME COUNTY PARKS: CHECK SIGNAGE AT EACH SITE. (HAR§ 13-130-20, HR§328J-3, MCC13.04A.070, & MCC13.040.20)
Moku Honua‘ula, makaiEach day, this portion of south Maui coastline is visited by several thousand people fishing and enjoying ocean and beach activities at state and county sites. This coastline can only support community needs if all of us follow state and county laws and guidelines for each individual site.
For generations, this coastline has challenged those who live here or visit. There are no places to buy water, food, sturdy footwear or sun-protection once you leave Wailea and Kīhei.
Cell-phone coverage is unreliable and emergency help may take time to respond. Are you prepared for the day?
