Message from the Mayor of Spoleto.

After more than fifty years the Coupe Mondiale returns to Italy. Spoleto, after hosting the first four editions of the Strumenti&Musica Festival, seals its rapport with this fascinating and unique musical world by opening the doors of its theatres to best musicians from the international accordion world. This is without doubt a unique occasion, the result of an original and suggestive proposal, capable of combining the traditions of folk music, the charm of classical compositions and the innovative, avantgarde sounds of today. This sixty fifth edition of the Coupe Mondiale ranks among the most important events hosted by our city and it should not be surprising that Spoleto has become a referral point for the wonderful world of the accordion; a world which, this year, will bring an unmissable mix of the most interesting ensembles, artists and composers within the panorama of the accordion to Spoleto.I thank the organisers for this achievement; firstly Mirco Patarini, Artistic Director of Italian Accordion Culture and their President Gianluca Bibiani, and I wish all guests, both Italian and international an unforgettable stay here in Spoleto.

Welcome to Spoleto! The Coupe Mondiale CIA-IMC UNESCO returns to Italy after 51 years. The only other occasions (1950 in Milan; and 1961 in Pallanza) were so long ago as to be lost in the dawning of the Confederation. In the meantime, the accordion has changed; it has grown and become international; it has evolved into a complete musical instrument and is recognised as such, much more so than in times when it had more commercial success and popular appeal. As a true born native of Spoleto, I can’t help but be proud of bringing the Coupe Mondiale to my city; it has been a dream of mine for many years, during all my travels around the world, participating in competitions,concerts, experiences that have shaped me and taught me. I have stepped on to the Nobel stage in Stockholm, the Opera Theatre in Cairo, played in front of huge crowds at open air events in Brazil... and yet, the Teatro Nuovo of Spoleto, recently dedicated to Maestro Giancarlo Menotti, always gives me an incomparable feeling. As a young boy, I would have given anything to play on this stage; once I had achieved this desire, I started to plan to bring an international event here, an event worthy of these great surroundings: the Coupe Mondiale. The city of Spoleto lends itself, like few others, to host a musical event of the highest quality, and I am delighted to have here all the important members of the international delegation and above all, major talents from countries all over the world. I wish everybody a happy stay, filled with emotion, and my dream now is that everyone will return home with something more in their hearts and minds.

On behalf of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) Executive Committee and CIA Member Nations worldwide, it is my great pleasure, honor and privilege as CIA President to welcome you to the 65th Coupe Mondiale International Competition for Accordionists hosted by our CIA member – The Italian Accordion Culture (IAC) – under the direction of CIA Honorary Vice President 2012 Mirco Patarini.This year is particularly

exciting as we return to Italy for the first time in over 50 years – the last time being when the CIA Coupe Mondiale was held in 1961 in Pallanza. Since our first competition in 1938, the CIA Coupe Mondiale has established itself as one of the most important accordion events in the world, and we are honored to be able to hold this international event once again in Italy. The founders of the CIA gathered in Paris in 1935 with the aim of working together to elevate the status of the accordion, and it is truly significant that our membership has continued working to promote accordion excellence around the world ever since. We are indeed fortunate to have been surrounded by the finest accordionists in the world representing artists, teachers, composers, publishers, media, manufacturers, organizations and students for over 75 years, and we look forward to working together during a long and productive future.I would like to offer a special welcome and thank you to each of our many contestants, their families and teachers, for supporting this our 65th Coupe Mondiale. Your commitment is an inspiration to us all and we wish you well as you compete in our seven categories of International competition. We truly appreciate your efforts and in our minds, you are all winners! The ITALIAN ACCORDION CULTURE is a non-profit organization, in Spoleto, whose statutory aims are to document and promote cultural initiatives, particularly all musical events and researches. Our goals are aimed at the re-evaluation of traditional folk songs, vocational training, promotion of new talents and cooperation amogst the foreign countries. The association also wants to contribute, through the support of volunteers, research, preservation and

dissemination of evidence pointing to the preservation of historical memory, the foundation of our civilization and our folklore. The IAC also holds the position of a Voting Member of the Italian CIA IMC-UNESCO conferred at the Winter Congress of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes, held in Skopje, Macedonia, in January 2008. This prestigious title conferred the ability to organize the national selections of the best Italian Accordionists who will take part during the competition of the Coupe Mondiale CIA.This event consists of a week of musical activities (Strumenti&Musica Festival), ranging from the International Competition (Strumenti&Musica Award) to the many concerts performed by well known and established artists. The previous editions of the event were characterized by the participation of several guest artists such as Mika Vayrynen, Viacheslav Semionov, Nicola Piovani, Renato Borghetti ... universally known personalities who have contributed, making a significant event from artistic content that could become in the opinion of international criticism. This 65th Coupe Mondiale is undoubtedly the pinnacle of a program which, in the face of many difficulties, has seen us overcome many obstacles, despite the problems that have characterized the economic environment at the moment.It is from this great achievement that we will work to ensure that SPOLETO, the 65th Coupe Mondiale world championship, will leave all who attend with wonderful memories of Italy of great music, wonderful food and truly unforgettable landscapes.

“En Cuatro Por Dos” Aldo Pagani decided to bring together a group of excellent musicians and friends to celebrate the music of the legendary Maestro Astor Piazzolla in memory of the 20th anniversary of his passing away on 4th July 1992. A tribute to Piazzolla by his closest collaborators and friends, featuring Peter Soave, winner of CIA Coupe Mondiale in 1984.

“Orquestra de Acoreon de Brusque” Conductor: M° Bruno Moritz Coming all the way from Santa Catarina State to Spoleto, to present their traditional music of southern Brazil.

Accordion Ensemble “Concertino” The ensemble, based in Moldova, comprising seven accordions, bass, piano and drums, will perform famous pieces from the classic, popular and jazz repertoire.

Akkordeonorchester Hof Conductor: M° Torsten PetzoldThe German accordion orchestra will play a variety of classical pieces, original compositions and arrangements from well known repertoire.

“World Accordion Orchestra” (WAO VI) Conductors: M°Joan Sommers and M° Torsten PetzoldFounded by Joan C. Sommers for the CIA, for the sixth time, competitors in the Coupe Mondiale, delegates, friends and members of the Jury will join together forming the largest Accordion Orchestra in the world.

Now in its third edition, the Paolo Soprani prize will be awarded by Mirco Soprani, Mayor of Castelfidardo, and Vincenzo Canali, President of the International Accordion Museum of Castelfidardo.

Orchestra da camera “Giuseppe Tartini” Based in Latina, the orchestra is one of the most important in Italy, cooperatingwith many famous musicians like Donato Renzetti, Katia Ricciarelli, Maria Dragoni, Luis Bacalov (Premio Oscar), (space) Mariella Devja and Viktoria Mullova. Among their most significant performances, was their extraordinary concert at the Vatican for the fifth centenary of the laying of foundation stone of the Basilica di San Pietro.

Conductor: M° Marco Gatti.Conductor and composer, he studied with Guido Baggiani and Matteo D’Amico, and then with Franco Donatoni. His work as a conductor is very vast, working with orchestras across Europe and with great musicians such as Bruno Canino, Sandro Verzani, Gianluca Littera and I Solisti della Scala. Even as a composer his work is very diverse, writing both Symphonic music and for the Theater. He is Professor of Composition at the Italian University.

Soloist: M° Vladimir ZubitskyAccordion Soloist, Composer and Conductor, he won the CIA Coupe Mondiale in 1975.Famous worldwide for his outstanding compositions for accordion solo, strings, orchestra, ballet and opera, he will perform some of his own compositions with pianist Natalia Zubitskaia and the Orchestra “G. Tartini”, under the direction of M° Marco Gatti.
