    Scouts are the

    Messengers of

Peace(HM King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia)

Since 2001, the Messengers of Peace initiative

of World Scouting has inspired over 10 million

scouts in 110 countries to work for peace in their

communities from Salvador scouts work withviolent street gangs to New Orleans scouts working

in post-Katrina New Orleans, or the scouts in the

Great Lakes region of Africa running an amazing

    inter-ethnic peace education.

Messengers of Peace was inspired by a great friend

of Scouting, His Majesty King Abdullah of Saudi

Arabia, when he saw the peoples of the world

moving apart in late 2001. He was joined by the

Swedish King (the Honorary Chairman of the

World Scout Foundation) and the two Heads

of State were so impressed with the results

that they have now launched a second phase

of Messengers of Peace challenging the Scout

Movement this time to ind 20 million scouts to

change their communities and their world.

By the time of its launch in Jeddah in September2011, over 300,000 scouts had already signed

up for this new challenge signing on line

    (scoutmessengers.org and Facebook). Each pin

on the map represents one of the 12,000 projects

they have devised to bring peace and harmony to

their communities. And at the launch, a further

4 million scouts worldwide pledged to join the

    initiative!

    Impressiveresults

In the irst phase, Scouts between 14 and 25 years

old implemented projects which restored peace to

their communities. For some, Peace is a clear goal

    inter-ethnic conlict, intercommunity mistrust in

these cases scouts cross the dividing lines and help

    bring people together.

For others, peace can be deined as stability

or harmony in their community so bullying in

school, marginalized young people in a community,

    health problems or environmental degradation

    become the challenge.

Normally scouts ind the resources for these projects

in their own communities most of the value added

comes from volunteer time and dedication.

And even in the less afluent communities

some fundraising is possible In Kenya, the

work of scouts with over 20,000 street kids has

been inanced exclusively from local resources!

The value of this global initiative to the world

over ten years is quite impressive: 10 millionscouts, working for an average of 100 hours

each on their projects this amounts to an

amazing one billion hours of service! Value

each hour of service at just one dollar and the

value to the worlds economy is not small!

    Support

FundSome projects are so good that they need to be

brought to scale, and even replicated in other

communities or other countries. And so a Support

fund, based in the World Scout Foundation has

    funded projects in many countries.

Food for Life, is an amazing project, initiated in the

townships of South Africa, helping poor children

to learn basic micro-farming skills, grow their ownfood and learn basic business skills. The support

fund helped strengthen this programme in South

Africa, and has since funded its adaptation to six

other African countries where it is lourishing in very

    different communities.

In order to bring programmes to scale in their own

countries, many scout organisations themselves need

support in strengthening their capacities Haiti, for

example, is a case in point with just 3,000 scouts

ten years ago, this country which is devastated

each hurricane season, was supported through

the global Scout network and when two years

ago it was hit by a devastating earthquake,

over 40,000 scouts were trained and ready

for action in the irst hours as autonomous

local groups because all communications were

down, and then as one of the only national

NGOs capable of helping foreign organisations

like the UN and other NGOs to distribute relief,

    and help rebuild communities.

Seeing this, for the second phase, King

Abdullah kindly gave an amazing gift of USD37

million to support the programme over 10

years! This support fund will contribute

partly to capacity building and mainly to

supporting local projects come to scale and to

be replicated in other communities or regions

    of the world.

    Building the network

Their Majesties the King of Saudi Arabia and the

King of Sweden challenged scouts worldwide to

build their network of Messengers of Peace. They

have also called for leaders in society throughout the

world to become Friends of Messengers of Peace.

What can you do to help your local scout group to

implement a project that changes your community?

How can you help nationally, or Internationally?

Theres space for companies too. The Global support fund is in

need of your support. Can you help match King Abdullahs gift?

    Real Value

But the real value of this programme, according to HH Prince

Faisal bin Abdullah, Minister of Education of Saudi Arabia, is not

the money, its the inspiration meeting scouts from over 90

countries at the launch in Jeddah and from 160 countries a couple

of months earlier at the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden, Prince

Faisal is one of the reasons why so many scouts have signed up.

We are all Messengers of Peace he stresses its the common

    cause of scouts worldwide!
