While no one on the current Eagle team played for Mitchell, he and his staff did recruit and sign reigning OVC Player of the Year and Preseason Player of the Year Chynna Bozeman. She will be a catalyst in the Eagle system this year under Hodges. Already the MSU and OVC career leader in three-pointers made and attempted, Bozeman will look to get her year started off on the right track. MSU coach Tom Hodges and UK assistant coach Matt Insell both are from Shelbyville, Tenn., and attended high school together. Hodges then coached at Middle Tennessee under Insell’s father, Rick. MSU assistant coach Christian Stefanopoulos will also be back in familiar surroundings as she spent the last three seasons at the video coordinator at UK after spending one season as an assistant at MSU under Mitchell. the Matchuplast time vs. Kentucky

Morehead, Ky. – Morehead State’s Chynna Bozeman scored a team high 18 points, but the visiting Kentucky Wildcat women’s basketball team overpowered the host Eagles, 72-55, Tuesday at Johnson Arena. MSU fell to 0-2, while UK remained unblemished at 3-0.

Bozeman had a tough night from the floor (6-of-21) but still managed to reach double figures for the 45th time in her career. UK got an 18-point night from A’dia Mathies, and Victoria Dunlap added 12 points and 16 rebounds. The Eagles held Dunlap 16 points below her season average though. Amber Smith added 15 points, while Amani Franklin totaled eight points and 12 rebounds. The game marked the return of former MSU head coach Matthew Mitchell, who led the Eagles for two seasons before returning to UK for his first head coaching gig.

MSU was able to stay within relative striking distance, but never was able to cut the deficit below 10 for the game. UK never led by more than 17 either. A three-pointer by Tiffanie Stephens had the UK lead down to 55-45 with 7:50 left but that’s as close as MSU got.

tom hodgesMSU Head Coach

Tom Hodges was named the Eagles’ ninth women’s basketball coach on May 17, 2010. When hired, he was the youngest

head coach in Division I.

A 28-year-old native of Shelbyville, Tenn., Hodges spent the previous five years at Middle Tennessee State, including the last two as an on-court assistant to rick Insell. Prior to MTSU, Hodges also worked at Chattanooga and Morehead State’s Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech.

He has been a part of seven conference championships and seven trips to the NCAA Tournament in just 10 years, and the three teams he has been a coach for have compiled a cumulative 218-86 record. Hodges has coached five conference players of the year (Janet Holt and Emily Christian, Tennessee Tech; Katasha Brown, Chattanooga; Chrissy Givens and Alysha Clark, Middle Tennessee State) and three All-Americans Givens, Clark and Amber Holt, MTSU). He’s also had three players drafted by the WNBA

(Givens - 31st to the Phoenix Mercury; Holt - Ninth to Connecticut Sun; and Clark - 17th to San Antonio Silver Stars.

Hodges tutored Clark, helping her earn All-American accolades. He also mentored Brandi Brown to All-Sun Belt honors, which led to her selection as the recipient of the Sun Belt Postgraduate Scholarship Award. His primary charge on court was the development of the Blue raider post players, including Clark and Brown.

A well-rounded coach who understands all aspects of a program’s success, Hodges was also responsible for recruiting and scouting opponents and he oversaw video editing and breakdown. As a director of operations for MTSU he handled scheduling and travel arrangements for the Blue raiders.

Hodges was a full-time assistant for the 2004-05 Chattanooga team that went 25-5, won the Southern Conference regular-season championship, and earned a berth to the Postseason WNIT. Chattanooga finished with a 25-5 record during the season.

He began his coaching career at OVC foe Tennessee Tech as an undergraduate assistant for coach leg-endary coach Bill Worrell. The Golden Eagles won two Ohio Valley Conference regular-season titles during Hodges time, amassing a 78-42 record, including 26-4 in 2000-01 (which included the nation’s longest winning streak of 19 games) and 22-8 in 2001-02.

At both Chattanooga and TTU, Hodges was responsible for all video editing and breakdown, film exchange, development of post players and coordination of all team travel.

In addition to his collegiate coaching, Hodges has coached at the AAU level for the Shelbyville Sports Shop. He coached in four national tournaments (2000, 2002-04) and won the 2004 U15 national title in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Hodges received his bachelor’s degree in extended education with a concentration in health and history in 2004 from Tennessee Tech.

MsU Re-United With Former CoachToday’s game marks the second season in a row MSU has faced Kentucky and former MSU head coach Matthew Mitchell. After spending several years as an assistant at UK, Mitchell was hired at MSU before the 2005-06 season, his first head coaching gig. In two years, he resurrected a struggling program, going 30-29 and winning a then-school record 13 OVC games in 2006-07. This year’s team doesn’t have much in common with Mitchell, however except that he and his staff did sign current Eagle senior Chynna Bozeman before they departed for UK.

ties that bindIn addition to Matthew Mitchell being a former MSU head coach, there are several other ties to the current MSU and UK women’s basketball programs.• Current MSU Assistant Coach christian stefanopoulos served the last three years under Mitchell at UK as video coordinator. Before that, she was also an assistant with Mitchell at MSU in 2006-07.• Kentucky Assistant Coach Matt insell and Morehead State coach tom hodges both are from Shelbyville, Tenn and attended high school together. They both also coached the 2004 Under-15 Shelbyville Sports Shop AAU team to a national title in Winston Salem, N.C.• Hodges coached for head man rick insell at Middle Tennessee, the father of UK assistant coach Matt Insell.• Morehead State freshman shanice Parker and UK redshirt freshman Bernisha Pinkett were high school teammates at H.D. Woodson High School in Washington D.C.
