Welcome from SarahWelcome to our first 2020 Mosaic Matters newsletter. 2019 saw our busiest year to date, providing over 1,800 hours of counselling for children and young people all over Dorset. The work our counsellors are doing continues to be diverse and increasingly complex.

With a new Family Events Organiser and Fundraising Assistant in the office, it is great to see our staff heading out all over the county to promote the work we do. They will be busy generating funds for a varied itinerary of family events through the year from ice-skating to adventure and sailing days. These days are great for our families who can meet people in similar circumstances and build friendships. This year as our audience continues to grow online with social media and email, we are working towards reducing our print newsletters and saving paper, so please do visit our social media pages from Facebook to Instagram to keep up with current news.

Lizzie BryantFamily Events Organiser

“I’m excited to join a joyful, caring and talented team who work hard together to support Dorset’s children and young people through difficult times. It’s a privilege and pleasure to be able to contribute to their ethos of care and Mosaic’s wonderful work.”

Kim ZeplerFundraising Assistant

“I started with Mosaic as a volunteer following the death of my nephews mum, my sister. My time with the charity has helped me realise that helping youngsters was something that really touched my heart. When the opportunity to work here came along I was absolutely delighted to accept the chance to work with such an amazing charity.

I live in Poole with my husband and a fine collection of bicycles. I love cycling and being outdoors. I feel immensely privileged to be part of a welcoming and wonderful team”.

Welcome from Margaret CEO

Another year, another decade – where did all that time go! Looking back over the past 10 years, Mosaic has grown from a very small charity with 3 members of staff and 4 counsellors to 12 part-time staff, 25 self-employed counsellors and over 40 volunteers! At that time, the number of children we supported each year was around 30 and today our caseload is just under 200!

We are so proud of how the service has developed; now offering not only post-bereavement support but pre-bereavement and early bereavement help and advice. We have plans to develop the service even further during the next three years and are currently working with focus groups across the county where young people we have supported will have the opportunity to tell us the difference Mosaic made and help us to provide activities they believe would help young people in the future.

As we move into the next decade, I am sure there will be many more developments in the support we offer. Of course, this would not be possible without the dedication of everyone involved, including the public who are so keen to fundraise – thank you!

Margaret Hannibal CEO

We would like to welcome Lizzie Bryant as Family Events Organiser and Kim Zepler as Fundraising Assistant to our staff.

Welcome to the first newsletter of a whole new year and indeed new decade! Fundraising during 2019 was very successful with lots of groups choosing to support Mosaic when raising funds through all different activities.

We love getting out and meeting people in the community, seeing what you are all doing. Hopefully many more of you will choose to support Mosaic throughout 2020. If you have any plans but are not sure where to start please get in touch, we have lots of resources available and will be able to guide you in the right direction for getting started. We are here to help you to achieve the best from your fundraising.

Mosaic will, as always, be hosting a number of fundraising events ourselves over the coming year and we would ask you to keep a close eye on the website and our social media to see what we are up to. We would love you to come along and join us at some of them. If you do not already follow us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter please make sure you do as there will be lots of information posted on all of these.

Give It Up and Donate for Lent

Lent is traditionally a time of year when we all attempt to give something up for 40 days and 40 nights. Have you considered what it might be this year? We are challenging as many people as possible to give something up and donate the money they are saving to Mosaic. Are you aware of what a difference £1 a day could make to the children and young people we work with?

This would pay for:

A memory box and the resources to help create it.

Training for a volunteer to support children at events and residential weekends.

Information and books for parents following bereavement.

Telephone support for parents and professionals.

You could give something up and help a child all in one gesture, what an amazing thing to do!

Fundraising Events

After almost 12 years, Mike Bartlett, Chair of Trustees, is standing down from the Board to take up a new role. Mike has seen the Charity grow from a small organisation with a vision, to the valued, successful service working throughout Dorset it is today. We would like to thank him for his time and support during the development of the Charity and everyone at Mosaic would like to wish him well for the future.

Wear Crazy Socks for Mosaic!

On Friday 26th June we will be asking schools to wear crazy socks for Mosaic. Please let everyone know and encourage them to sign up to the challenge.

For just £1 donation per person, you could be helping children and young people who have experienced a bereavement to learn how to understand and express the overwhelming feelings grief can bring and achieve their potential in life.

Contact [email protected] for more information.

If you are unsure of the best way to get money raised to us, please get in touch on 01258 837071, we have lots of different ways you can donate.

There will be more exciting things coming up over the next few months and we will be sending out regular updates. If you would like to receive them, please make sure you have sent us your most recent email address and permission to use it. Contact [email protected].

If you would like to get involved or hold an event of your own, please contact Laura [email protected].

Thank you Mike!

GoodGoodbye!bye!

What have we been up to?

Residential Weekend

Stone CarvingThank you to Burngate Stone Carving Centre who ran a day of carving with 8 Mosaic young people. Some beautiful work was created and will be a lasting memory for some of our families.

Christmas Party Thank you to 4Com who funded and helped to organise the Christmas party for around 50 children, with lovely food, Jules the Entertainer, Father Christmas and of course our dedicated volunteers.

Our latest Residential Weekend took place in November on a very wet and windy weekend.

16 children and young people attended camp in November and even the wild and stormy weather did not stop the energy, engagement and fun everyone had. The wonderful volunteers supporting the event used their creativity and imagination to come up with engrossing indoor games and challenges to compensate for the soggy conditions outside, including the now infamous ‘caterpillar’ game! On Sunday, the weather settled enough to get outside for activities. This is what some of the young people said…

“I have enjoyed the craft side of the weekend I have also

enjoyed making friends who have experienced similar situations and

losses.”

“We had the best time. My favourite thing was making friends and doing the play! I feel

happy here.”

Our weekends are funded through community donations and fundraising, and we are very grateful to everyone who supports us. You can find out more about our Residential Weekends at: www.mosaicfamilysupport.org/residential-weekends

Music EventDuring November and December 2019, some of our families attended a six week course run by Absolute Music, learning new skills, their favourite songs and making recordings. Thank you to Jamie and everyone at Absolute Music who funded this activity.

Quote from one of the parents:

“My lad was one of the children who took part in this. He absolutely loved it and was sad when it finished! Thank you for giving him this opportunity.”

Having fu n on camp!

Thank you Absolute Music!

“I like when we played some songs what made us remember our lost ones.”

Fundraising News

Corporate SupportThere are businesses big and small all over Dorset who support Mosaic and we would love to find more companies who would like to help. If you own a company in Dorset, or work at a company who have a Charity of the Year, please get in touch with us and we can arrange to meet and talk about how businesses in Dorset have already helped Mosaic and what we can offer in return. We can supply Mosaic branded clothing, and collection tins; mention you on social media and publicity in our publications in print and online. We will happily shout from the rooftops about the people who are helping us to help families through bereavement in Dorset.

The White Stuff Foundation and the store in Dorchester have been supporting Mosaic for

9 years. Staff and Mosaic volunteers have run events in store and out and about from cake sales to physical challenges. Some have become volunteers and attended our weekends. It has been great to have their support. Please get in touch with Mosaic if you would like a copy of our Corporate Supporters Pack, which can guide you through ideas and give you inspiration to help you support our work.

If you would like to get involved or hold an event of your own, please contact: [email protected].

Focus

Our Early Bereavement Intervention (EBI) was a new addition to our service in 2019 and offers support to

families when a death has recently occurred.

We receive a large number of enquiries in the very early stages of grief from parents and carers wanting advice on how to tell the children, advice for attending funerals and

understanding which behaviours are normal after a death.

At this early stage it is too soon for formal counselling, as there is a natural grief process that children must go through. Our EBI work includes telephone support for parents, carers and schools alongside up to 3 visits to the family. The aim of these visits is to normalise the

feelings surrounding the grief process and to offer advice to parents and carers for how they can best support their children at a really difficult time.

‘At the darkest of times following the death of a loved one it is so important that we offer families a service where they can talk about their experiences and find advice and support. Since starting our Early Bereavement Intervention, we have had such heart-warming feedback from families that our telephone support and home visits have been so needed during such a difficult

time for them. Straight after a bereavement, it is often too early for formal bereavement counselling and we believe what is most helpful for families is to normalise grief responses, discuss concerns together and link into school and family supports.

We know that not all families will need bereavement counselling, however our early bereavement service has helped us to provide further support sooner to those that do.’

Quote from Julie our Family Services Therapy Manager

All of these difficult early phone calls and family meetings are funded by Mosaic fundraising, so please help raise awareness so we can continue to offer this support to Dorset families.
