Seguono Giorgio de Chirico, Massimo Campigli, Alberto Savinio, Mario Sironi, Arturo Martini e Marino Marini. Approfondimenti monografici dedicati a grandi maestri come Felice Casorati, Giorgio Morandi, Osvaldo Licinie Fausto Melotti chiudono l’itinerario.

With The Collections, the Mart explores overa century of history of Italian and international art. The display project, which will be permanent, with regular changes, additions and rotations, is divided into two sections:one dedicated to modern art, the other to the contemporary scene. The invention of the modern leads from some 19th century preludes (Medardo Rosso) to the 20th century, which provided the setting for both the revolutions of the avant-garde movements and for the recovery of tradition. The rooms dedicated to the Futurists Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, Gino Severini, Luigi Russolo, Fortunato Depero and Enrico Prampolini also contain some rare documents from the Mart’s archival holdings, which is also the venue for the Centro Internazionale Studi sul Futurismo. These are followed by Giorgio de Chirico, Massimo Campigli,Alberto Savinio, Mario Sironi, Arturo Martini and Marino Marini. There are monographic diversions dedicated to such great masters as Felice Casorati, Giorgio Morandi, Osvaldo Licini and Fausto Melotti who close the itinerary.

The exhibition, which includes masterpieces from the collections of the Mart and prestigious public and private loans, illustrates the origins and development of Divisionism, which played a key role in the Italian artistic renewal between the end of the 19th and early 20th century, eventually being incorporated in the avant-garde Futurist movement.

From the studiesof matter and spatial limitations, and on paint itself by Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Afro Basaldella and the early conceptualism of Piero Manzoni, we move on to the American approach to Pop art. This is followed by the work of Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman and the Italian responses of Mario Merz, Giovanni Anselmo and Vincenzo Agnetti, which arein turn followed by the eclectic researchinto images of Luigi Ontani and the Transavanguardia. We thus arrive at the present day, with works by new generationsof artists in the in progress section of the Mart’s collections’ new layout.

Right from the entrance, architecture and sculpture intertwine, highlighting the characteristics of both: the expressivenessof the space and that of the matter, the experience of light and that of volume. In the centre of the Mart, a large bronze trunk climbs almost to the point of breaking the structureof the museum, while a marble almost twenty metres high marks the center of a layout in the spacious spaces of the second floor, whichfor the first time are presented as pure architecture free of any wall. All around grows an empathetic landscape made of bronze bark, anthropomorphic forms and gesturesof plants, imprints of trees, marble veins, casts of soil. What is thus offered to the public is the dense poetic vocabulary of an artist who has marked a crucial step in the history of art.

His examination of sculpture does not stop with the object, however. Since 1963 at the Judson Dance Theater, the crossroads of American experimental work of the ’60s, Robert Morris has been interpreting theatre and cinema with the eyes of a sculptor. Through the extreme use of slow-motion, stylised gestures, alternation between synchronous and asynchronous, projectedin the large spaces of the Mart, the historic performances and his most important films made between 1963 and 2005 are confronted with sculptures and sound installations.Neo Classic, Mirror, Slow Motion and Birthday Boy – the latter dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Michelangelo’s David – complete the investigation into primary forms, giving us moving arts in terms of the most exquisitely physical. With the Robert Morris. Films and Videos exhibition, Mart continues its research into the great masters of contemporary art and the various formit takes.

ROBERT MORRISFilm e Video

MIMMO JODICEDalla collezione “i Cotroneo”

MIMMO JODICEFrom the “i Cotroneo” collection
Entrusted to Mart by the collectors Anna Rosa and Giovanni Cotroneo, Mediterraneo is an extraordinary cycle of images created by Mimmo Jodice in the mid-1990s. One of Italy’s preeminent photography masters, Jodice began exploring the photographic art form in the 1960s, immediately seeing it not so much a tool for description as a means of expression. In the 1980s he shifted away from the human figure and began using black-and-white images to transfigure vacant urban spaces, architectures, landscapes, archaeological fragments and other testaments to the history of humankind, imbuing them with a metaphysical atmosphere. The works presented in this exhibition, organized in collaboration with the MADRE contemporary art museum of Naples, feature the focus on the myth, memory, culture and landscapes of the Mediterranean area that has always characterized the work of this great Neapolitan photographer.

The Mart and the Museion of Bolzano share the Archivio di Nuova Scrittura, a collectionof works, books and documents dedicated to verbal-visual research. The collection focuses principally on forms of expression in Italian art of the 1960s and ’70s featuring the use of words and visual signs. The exhibition presents a selection of works and documents highlighting the special qualities of this collection of fragile, multivalent objects that resist classification. Examples of the poetic quest it embodies include the gestural alphabet in the photographs of Ketty La Rocca and Neide Dias de Sà, the thread-interwoven writing in the letters of Amelia Etlinger and the booksof Maria Lai, the object poems of Luciano Caruso, and the visual poetry of the precursors Stéphane Mallarmé and Francesco Cangiullo. All is now documented on the website set up as part of the VVV VerbalVisualVirtual project. The creationof a digital platform based on interactivemaps makes it possible to explore themany interconnections between worksand documents (letters, publications, photographs), the complex relations among different artists, and the entire creative process.

Combined with existing works in the museum collections, the recent donation of a significant corpus of works by Mario Raciti, a donation made by Carlo Damiano and Raciti himself, has made it possible to develop an exhibition that explores the pictorial universe of this artist from his early beginnings to his most recent works. Balancing between remembrance and poetic song, myth and ancient symbols, his paintings lead us into a rarefied, abstract and lyrical dimension. Traces, apparitions and fragments assume form on the canvas in a fleeting figurative nostalgia, ever on the verge of vanishing, fraying into nothing or sinking into white, the artist’s favourite colour. From the Figure fantastiche of the Sixties and the Presenze assenze of the Seventies to the Mitologie and Misteri of the following decades, Raciti has always sought “something invisible that I will perhaps never reach” (Mario Raciti).
