Leadership Camps

Hello, my name is Aj.Rob Cooney. I have been teaching at Satree Phuket School for four years. This year I was asked by the IP program to create Leadership Camps for the M.4 and M.2 students.

All aspects of these camps were designed and created by myself and Aj.Nikki Cooney. The camps were designed so that the students were learning all the time in a fun and controlled environment. The activities included Human Roller, Spider web, Tanagrams, Matchstick puzzles and evening talent shows and Miss IP competitions. All activities and exercises were created with the purpose of enhancing our student’s leadership and co-operative skills whilst participating in group activities. Each activity required a different leader to ensure all students took on the role of leader.

The M.4 ‘One 4 All, All 4 One’ camp was the first to be undertaken. The camp was held before the semester started as the M.4 students are made up of two M.3 classes with new students from other schools. The activities for the camp were designed to get the students working together in the hope that they would become closer friends, enhance their behaviour and improve the classroom environment.

The M.2 ‘Young Leaders’ Camp’ was the second camp of the semester. As the students on this camp are in their second year of SPK, it was held to help them prepare for future studies and group activities that they will be faced with in the coming years at the school. This camp also had 25 students from Pichai Rattanakhan School, Ranong. Due to the presence of these students a valuable lesson was to co-operate and work productively with strangers, which is a very valuable life skill for their futures.

The activities on the camp were designed to test the student’s physical and mental abilities with an emphasis on English language use in regards to taking and giving instructions. The activities also had great level of inter-personal skill usage.

As Satree Phuket School is an A1 Standard School. It is dedicated to preparing its students to become important global leaders and citizens. These camps taught important lessons to prepare them for University studies and also the modern international job market.

Why Drama is important for learning English

Hi, my name is Nikki Cooney. I have been teaching Drama at Satree Phuket School for the past 3 years. In this time, the students have entered and won many competitions : 10 Golds & 1 Silver; including the National Championship 2012.

Drama promotes cooperation, collaboration, self-control, goal-oriented learning as well as emotional intelligence skills. Drama bridges the gap between course-book dialogues and natural usage, and can also help to bridge a similar gap between the classroom and real life situations by providing insights into how to handle tricky situations.

Drama strengthens the bond between thought and expression in language, providing practice of pronunciation, pitch, stress, tone, vocal quality, projection, as well as facial expressions, body language and gestures. It also offers good listening practice. One of the greatest advantages to be gained from the use of drama is that students become more confident in their use of English by experiencing the language in operation.

Drama gives learners the chance to use their own personalities. It draws upon students’ natural abilities to imitate and express themselves, and arouse interest and imagination. Drama encourages adaptability, fluency and communicative competence. It puts language into context, and by giving learners experience of success in real-life situations it should arm them with confidence for tackling the world outside the classroom.

Through drama, a class will address, practice and integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening. Drama also fosters and maintains students’ motivation, by providing an atmosphere which is full of fun and entertainment. In so doing, it engages feelings and attention and enriches the learners’ experience of the language.

Drama is a wonderful tool and aid for the students to express themselves in English. I thoroughly enjoy teaching Drama at Satree Phuket School and hope to continue doing so, long into the future. The students’ ability amazes me every year; with their hard work, dedication, and commitment. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future will bring (more Golds, I hope. And who knows, maybe some TV & Film superstars! (> (

There are 2 new teachers in this learning area. Let’s know who they are.

Hi. My name is Ratchanok Uicheng. My nickname is Took. I am a new teacher, responsible for teaching English to M.4 students. I graduated with second-class honours in English from the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University. My plan after graduation was to find a job that encouraged me to practically use English and Chinese, the two languages that I am passionate about. Luckily, I found that teaching answered my desire and playing such an important role in contributing to the development of each student is extremely fulfilling. So, I decided to further my study and received another diploma in Curriculum and Instruction. In addition to teaching, I am interested in languages, art, modern design, movies and music. I am really honored to be given a chance to introduce myself here and I hope that, one way or another, I will get to know everyone - students, parents, teachers and school administrators - better.

I’m Elme Makuwing, a 32-year-old teacher who has been teaching English in schools for 7 years. I’m a secondary teacher from Yala Province. I’m a Master Teacher of English and hold a Master Degree in TEIL (Teaching English as an International Language). I’m currently a new teacher at SPK and teaching Fundamental English for M.3 and English Around You for M.4. Moreover, I’m the Homeroom Teacher for students M.4/11.

“A Thousand Miles begin at the first step” I decided to move from home in order to succeed my goals; to gain more master in teaching experiences and to tackle personal life with different atmosphere in teaching fields. I always believe that THINGS ARE ALWAYS OFFERED FOR THOSE WHO ARE SEEKING. Surely, I am one who never ignores to approach it. Everyone could say that becoming a teacher is not tough BUT indeed to be a professionally qualified teacher is much more obviously important.
