EM

Research and innovation are two simple words. Yet they refer to a difficult, adventurous world. Newsworthy, especiallythese days, research and innovation are the contemporary mantra, more often mentioned than actually put intopractice. This fifth issue of MRZ proposes a journey through the concrete results that Marazzi obtained thanks to its constant engagement in research and innovation of both processes and products. To underline this, the heart of the magazine is dedicated to a preview of the new SistemAcollection. The result of the collaboration among several Marazzi research labs, SistemA is not only a new product but a new material. New production approaches that govern the new chemical-physical process of the material provideSistemA with resistance, brightness and stability neverpreviously obtained in the ceramic sector. And it also features an integrated, flexible chromatic system designed by architect Dal Lago. Just as innovative were also the results of the collaboration between Marazzi and Dominique Perrault on the new NH Hotel newly presented just outside Milan. A glassy, light, black and technologic skin that Marazzi has produced using its own technology and experience in the field of ventilated walls. Innovation does not only rhyme with invention: to innovate also means to re-interpret with new eyes one’s tradition. Monolith is a collection that reads ancient inspirations in an original way, also translating the suggestions from the soil and the sand into surfaces of solid density. Research and innovation are also the main players in the three appointments by Marazzi during the MilanInternational Furniture Fair: three opportunities to get in touch with different design languages and verify the versatility of the products. Research and innovation in the design of collections that were conceived to enhance large modules, ceramics that go well beyond the limits of the tile format and are ready to talk the language of space. Then research and innovation between the past and the future, to explore the land of décor, a new frontier of contemporary expression. EM

Monolith Marazzi
At the beginning there was the earth. Dry, worked by hand, then cooked in the sun. Mere bricks to use for building house
and temples. Then there were colors, oxides and sands that, through the glazing process in the oven, made terracotta
bricks bright and shiny. Ceramics were born in Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium B.C. and with its colors it seemed
to take the light of the sky on earth. The story of the evolution of ceramics is, since, then, one of a never-ending dialogue
between light and matter, color and brightness. This new collection is a comeback to the origins, a present to the earth
and its strength. Monolith is not the reinvention of a particular type of stone or the imitation of a specific material.

in pieno nelle ampie superfici continue e senza interruzioni.

e disponibili grezzi o lappati. —– Four neutral tones that range from
the lightness of sand and the depth of tarmac, four earthly colors –
compact, textured, and available in a raw or lapped format.
With its simple, neutral tones, Monolith rather suggests the same compactness of the soil, its apparently
continuous uniformity. Monolith evokes the infinite textures of the sand, the dough-like roughness
of tarmac, the crystalline geometries of porphyry. Qualities that are underlined both by the large formats and
particularly by some special elements, conceived as fragments of possible architectures, traces
from which the regular pattern of the drawing can start again. A first panel, whose composition plays with square
and rectangular modules, evokes the cuts of stone, almost to underline the intimate geometry of a structure.
A second element merely offers a striped surface, a regular rhythm of shadow and light that underlines the sameness
of the matter. A third element alternates contrasting tones in asymmetrical and irregular lines. Last, a fourth one shows
a wavy surface like delicate soil movements or curves that were carved from a simple earth wall. But the real power of a
material that can be indifferently used for indoor or outdoor only openly emerges through the wide,
flowing surfaces where there are no interruptions. More than a pavement, this is an artificial soil, a solid, full surface.
By marrying versatility and great resistance, Monolith is perfectly suited for wide public places as well as for domestic ones;
it can become a road or a square with high passage or a land to live and experience •

Architetto, urbanista, pittore e poeta, Hassan Fathy
i principi in tecniche costruttive tradizionali.
mattoni in terra cruda.
copertura per volte sottili e come spessa parete isolante,
Fathy immaginò un’architettura sensibile e realistica, adatta
Hassan Fathy: building with the earth, the air, and people
He was an architect. But also an urban planner, a painter, and a
poet. Hassan Fathy was born on March 23rd 100 in Alexandria
and died in Cairo on November 30th 18. Though he was
brought up in a cultivated and cosmopolitan environment, Fathy,
son of a landowner, found in the countryside of his country the
reasons that inspired him in his most interesting research. Struck
by the backwardness of rural Egyptian landscapes, he immediately
understood that importing the expensive modern architecture
in the country was simply not an option. He therefore started
to consider the possibility of interpreting the contemporary
language using traditional building methods. Modernity was
in the thought and the project but materials would be mere dry
soil brick. By marrying a rational approach with all the possibilities
offered by bricks – sometimes used as a light cover, others as a

quanto efficaci. A lungo funzionario governativo, Fathy
momento culturale e collettivo.
Come

realistic architecture, perfectly suited to the climate and the
people. But his objective was not simply to build more economic
homes that their European counterparts. He also wanted
to solve a serious social problem. In order to provide the
inhabitants with new dignity and self-support, he involved them
in the production of bricks and in building using elementary yet
highly efficient methods. For a long time a government official,
Fathy was asked to design complete villages and he was able
to involve the whole community and thus to turn a building side
in a cultural, collective moment. The New Baris village of 167
is maybe the one that summarizes best the spirit of his projects
and his approach to architecture. Like in his previous jobs,
also here homes are wholly built with arches, domes, vaults
and brick steps, put into place with no use of scaffolding •

Metropolitan mirror effects A couple of original architectural objects that are printed in memory. A strong, qualitative sign in the urban passage that serves as a starting point to create a net of visual relationships to multiply the attractive power of an area of strategic expansion, far from the center of the city. This is the concept that led to the design of the elegant towers of the new NH Hotel, near the New Milanese Fair Pole, recently opened. They were conceived by Dominique Perrault, an internationally acclaimed architect, highly appreciated for his care and attention to the relationship between architecture and city forms. The two monoliths of 18 and 19 floors that make up the hotel complex are covered with a fascinating shiny black skin and positioned slightly sideways with respect to the vertical axe, almost as if to suggest a very unlikely unstableness.

Impossible not to be caught by the refined and minimalist geometry of the two gigantic prisms, differentiated by a small difference in height and by the opposite inclination.
world-wide. With the new SistemA series, Marazzi today re-writes the parameters of Italian tradition under a new technological light, as well as an innovative one. Thanks to an advanced, patented production process, Marazzi research labs were able to obtain exceptionally resistant surfaces without sacrificing on color quality (which is particularly intense and deep), nor on brightness, enhanced by the deep crystallization of the superficial layer of the tile. A technological advance that puts together all the traditional qualities of ceramics with stoneware high performance and versatility, never before obtained on a floor, in a color palette that ranges from neutral to warm and cold tones. Extra-ordinary brightness, exceptional color saturation, possibility to use the material in- and outdoors, on walls or floors, thorough dimensional stability, the possibility to realize continuous surfaces and bright ones with no joints, and large formats.
The crystalline nature of the material ensure great resistance and stability but also extreme chromatic brightness. Perfectly transparent, crystals do not modify the chromatic homogeneity of the colored material in its mass. Quite the opposite: thanks to their physical characteristics, they underline the beauty of surfaces •
RIFRAZIONEREFRACTION
SistemA is made of crystallized porcelain stoneware, a new material that puts together the advantages of stoneware and those of glazed materials. Born in the Marazzi labs, thismaterial offers an extremely high abrasion resistance and surfaces of exceptional density thanks to the characteristics of vitro ceramics products. At the bottom of the Turin hill, very close to the river, a new restaurant with an ancient flavor, balanced between solid walls and modern surfaces
Ceramics and old bricks The course of the Po river and the hill in Turin mark the border between the town of industryand commerce and the diluted and quiet residential areas in which one can still experience the special atmospheres that are suspended between the feeling of countryside and that of summer holidays. The design of this small restaurant acts almost as an interpreter of this metaphoric link between the past and the present by harmoniously connecting the old building structures and the hyper-modern ceramic materials. The starting point for the project was the decision of unveiling the bricks of the thick supporting walls, a thick surface from which at times river stones emerge. A background that is at the same time rough and warm, underlined by a new ceramic pavement in Marazzi Sahara Nero ceramics of large format, selected in the striped version almost to evoke large slabs of worked

The red of bricks comes back transformed in the shiny glass tesserae of Crystal Mosaic Rubino that cover the background of the bar, just like the new walls that separate the living from the service areas. In the restrooms, the ancient walls echo the geometric relieves of the Muri di Marazzi which reveals all its versatility by adapting itself perfectly to the small size of the space. The floor of all passage areas are solved with a thick, irregular laying of the elements of the Sahara series, beige color, as if to create a mediation between the hectic rhythm of bricks and the lengthy surface of the great modules that are used in the other areas.

Underground elegance The Paris under-ground has always been one of the most stimulating urban locations for writers and film makers who have celebrated its vertiginous shades and troubling human presences with tones ranging from romantic to visionary. But the stomach of the Ville Lumière also hides a different world: a smart, aristocratic one, that brings us back in time as far as the Belle Epoque. In order to experience this, it is sufficient to enter the stations of one of the oldest lines of the Parisian tube, the North-South line, today shared between nrs 12 and 13. The 30 years story of this private line and its accurate design is almost a small metropolitan apology, in which the myths of progress, technology and civilization meet with the light and sensual atmospheres of the early 20th century and the first experimentations on ceramics to be used as an industrial covering material. The story starts in 1905, when the

private company “Société du chemin de fer électrique souterrain Nord-Sud de Paris” starts working on a new underground route that cuts the city perpendicularly to the Seine, from Porte de Versailles to Porte de la Chapelle. Divided in two branches (A and B) that joined under the Gare St. Lazare to then proceed towards the northern outskirts, the new line was opened between 1910 and 1916 after facing numerous engineering and commercial challenges. One of the greatest problems to face was the fierce competition with the “Compagnie des chemins de fer Métropolitain de Paris”, the company that for the first time engaged in underground urban transportation. A competitive domain in which travelers’ comfort was an important issue. Committed to quality rather than quantity of service, the North-South Company commissioned an appreciated professional of the time, architect Lucien Bechmann, with the creation of the image of the stations. Using the traditional white shiny ceramic tiles as a base – a material that was, at that time, a standard for practical more than aesthetic reasons – Bechmann was able to create a coherent, high-impact layout,

definitely superior to that of the rival company, less sophisticated yet at the same time more eclectic. This superiority was apparent from the surface entries where the North-South line was proposing, against the magniloquent iron kiosks by Hector Guimard of the CMP lines, a row of sober small columns and ceramic enameled beige skirting boards with milky-white tones and elegant graphic style floral motifs, a sign of the imminent move from Art Nouveau to Art Déco. By cleverly combining industrial logic and a craftsmanship approach,Bechmann commissioned two prestigious foundries of the time (Boulenger & Cie. and Gien) with the production of a wide range of friezes, skirting boards and frames to beautify corridors and platforms, also leveraging on the style differences between the two companies (that delivered, for instance, respectively smooth or pointed friezes). He did so in order to enrich the variety and preciousness of the decoration. Many details made the North-South line more welcoming and exclusive than the ones of the competition: the pleasing curved path of the corridors, the sinuous elegance of wavy friezes or the generous size of train platforms, with the names of the stops inserted in superb floral frames whose color changed according to the importance of the stations. All this was helas not enough to save the line though: as a matter of fact, the company was bought by its competitor in 1930. Rescued from the modernization winds at least in one part, it still remains a vibrant fragment of a long gone world •

Surprise! At the last edition of the Cersaie fair, Hatria has introduced a new module that reinterprets the image of the bathroom
Ever since the bathroom has grown from a mere personal hygiene lab to an actual room
of the house, designers have been focused on working on the necessary elements.
The sink, integrated in wide support surfaces, has immediately turned into the center
of complex operations, in which water is no longer the sole player. On the contrary,
the role of water is celebrated in the design of bathtubs and showers that evoke thermal environments,
relaxation, massage and steamy saunas. Only the two more functional elements,
WC and bidet, had so far maintained their traditional look in shiny vitreous china, either square
or rounded. Always an element to be more or less ashamed about. With this design
by Nilo Gioacchini, Hatria has re-conceived their shape and image, by inventing a unique model, hidden
behind a movable wooden plank. A simple, linear element that also serves as a useful bench,
perfectly integrated in the layout of the room.

—– Grandangolo G-Full, a multi-functional bathroom

revealed when the upper wooden panel is opened.

L A U R A T R A L D I

Giochi materici Material games. A collection designed from nature, with exotic fruits and gems serving as inspiration. And realized with a touch of humor in that each piece is like a character. It’s called Crystal Candy Set the latest work by Jaime Hayon, nine vases in limited
edition that the Spanish designer has created for Baccarat. They are realized
with the crystal of the French maison mixed with several materials, amongst
which also ceramics. Hayon and the Baccarat maestri have used different crystal
cutting techniques in order to obtain the required thicknesses
and textures. The result is a surprising mix of colors, surfaces and shapes
in which the lightness of the crystal is underlined and enhanced
in the coupling with the purity of ceramics.
No vase, no flower. Hella Jongerius loves animals and plants. And for her latest collection designed
for Galérie Kréo – her long-time limited editions gallery – she digs into the universe of flora
and fauna. It is simply named Flowers the line of ceramic, porcelain, wood
and plastic vases that the Dutch designer presents this April in Paris: home accessories
in which the flower is no longer a décor but part of the function itself.
“It’s a research project”, she explains, “that helped me understand and rationalize
the behavior of porcelain and ceramics during the cooking and cooling processes”.
In order to obtain perfect surfaces, with no breaks, Jongerius
and the Bernardaud technicians who collaborated in the project, were actually
forced to work on trial and error on the thicknesses, the temperatures and the joints
between the various materials. For two whole years!

L A U R A T R A L D I

Nostalgia, but with no tears. There are two sides to Paola Navone’s universe: the ethnic, colorful and luxurious one, made of fabrics and sophisticated textures often featuring eastern influences, and the elegant one, all played on the coupling of black and white, and the perfect geometrical forms. It belongs to the latter
the hyper-precious table service Taste, designer for Reichenbach, the historical
German porcelain maker. A collection that looks back to classical forms,
hence carrying the sensation of déjà vu. Without falling into
nostalgia thanks to the formal resolution of the profiles, characterized
by a linear, essential trait. In which only the color white
and the perfection of forms stand out.
One and a thousand. From unique to multiple. From a fancy signature piece to a functional home accessory. Designers at Ibride – the French studio that puts together the know-how of Carine Jannin, editor and Rachel & Benoît, respectively a graphic and a product designer, and who will be in Milan for the Salone del Mobile – certainly know how to play
with forms. In their hands, a Ming vase turns into a set of stacked bowls, one plate,
two salad bowls and a small vase, with the exterior whiteness of melamine
as a substitute for ceramics, used to hide the dreamy inner world, populated of crazy herbs
and disappearing silhouettes… all there to be discovered.

For centuries, the size of ceramic covering was always constraint. Traditional technologies could effectively produce only 10 to 20 cm max tiles: the risk was that of obtaining several defects and deformations. Reaching larger formats meant using thicker depths, with an obvious exponential increase of weights. Only for the terracotta floors it was conceivable to work on slightly bigger formats. It has now been ten years that technological innovation, coupled with materials evolution (such as porcelain stoneware) as well as the use of highly efficient ovens has allowed the development of significantly bigger modules. A technology sprint that has Marazzi in pole position already in the 1970s since it was the first company to propose a 60x60 cm format. Another twenty years had to go by before that limit was ever overtaken. Thanks to high resistance and density material studies, it was possible to obtain elements with great dimensional stability and contained thicknesses that increased the size of the modules beyond one meter. After all, it is only thanks to the constant grow in technology performance that Italian ceramics were able to maintain and consolidate a real world leadership. In the last few years, also the public at large has started to appreciate big formats. Using the possibilities offered by modern ceramics in the faithful reproduction of surface textures of marble and stones, large formats have turned into an interesting alternative to natural materials. Great resistance, limited weight, an endless variety of aesthetic and finishing solutions as well as the total indifference to chemical and metereological agents have allowed architects to reproduce in highly technological buildings the image of natural surfaces, while at the same time increasing the performance without damaging nature. Today Marazzi offers a wide range of large format materials with great technical and aesthetic qualities. Perfectly suitable products to face, with elegance and safety, even the more serious situations.

Cersaie 2008. Throughly dedicated to SistemA, the Marazzi space at last year’s Cersaie was designed by Marco Romanelli like a happy, colorful, and lively square.
Resistenza all’abrasioneCapacità di resistere allo sfregamento meccanico.
Anti-icing qualityThe anti-icing quality of a ceramic material, which is said “anti-ice”. The characteristic depends on the dimensional distribution of the pores, on the capillary geometric shapes, on the elastic module, on the flexing resistance and on other factors linked to the production cycle.
Fire clayA term that indicates a ceramic product obtained through single firing of a colored dough, with presence of iron oxide. It normally is referred to sanitary pieces or large one, covered with a white cage and a transparent enameled surface. The maximum cooking temperature, generally ranging between 1200 and 1300°C , depends on the type of clays that were used and it leaves a porosity that corresponds to a 10-15% of water absorbance.
Crystallized stonewareA highly technical material, with a high texture content, that puts together with main qualities of unglazed porcelain stoneware (UGL) with those of glazed products (GL). It is obtained through a special, patented process by Marazzi in which a glass phase is coupled with a crystallization one, hence guaranteeing exceptional anti-abrasion qualities, ease of surface cleaning and an intense, bright color.
Resistance to abrasionThe capacity to withstand mechanical crackling. For determining the resistance to abrasion of the surfaces of glazed tiles, the EU norm envisages the PEI method (in wet conditions) and the MCC one (in dry conditions).
Ceramic glassA slab issued from a porcelain stoneware support, covered with a colored glass layer. The glass grains are synthesized directly on the ceramic support in order to increase the qualities of uniformity and resistance that are typical of the product. Later, it is mirror polished in order to increase the reflective qualities of the surface.
