Prólogo

Además de las formas usuales para adquirir un vocabulario más extenso en una lengua foránea, como

pueden ser la lectura, la conversación, el uso de diccionarios o los ejercicios tediosos en libros de texto, existe

otra muy agradable, que permite añadir palabras por referencia o comparación.

Esto es posible y muy fácil en inglés. Veamos por qué. El inglés y el español son lenguas indoeuropeas. El

primero pertenece a la familia germánica, en tanto que la del nuestro es la itálica. Estas familias y otras más

tienen una misma raíz, que se remonta a muchos siglos. Por ejemplo, es fácil apreciar el origen común de las

palabras madre (español), mother (inglés), Mutter (alemán), matr (ruso) o mère (francés). Pero, ¿dónde

está ese vínculo en patria (español), fatherland (inglés) y rodina (ruso)? ¿O en muesca (español), notch

(inglés), Kerbe (alemán) y entalhe (portugués)? Ya vemos que ni siquiera entre vocablos de idiomas

pertenecientes a una misma familia (español, francés y portugués o inglés y alemán) existe la posibilidad de

establecer siempre una relación clara.

Sin embargo, no hay que asustarse. No nos dedicaremos aquí a un estudio profundo de la lexicología para

desentrañar los lazos comunes que puedan existir entre los idiomas. Para nuestro propósito, nos bastará

conocer una buena parte de los innumerables vocablos ingleses que se han formado a partir del latín y el

griego, fundamentalmente.

Como sucede con todas las lenguas, en diferentes épocas, el inglés ha tomado prestado de otros idiomas. En

algunos casos, estas palabras se utilizaron en su momento para el nivel lingüístico científico, pues era normal

emplear el latín y el griego para precisar términos. En otros, los estamentos sociales acomodados recurrieron

a palabras extranjeras que, supuestamente, daban más elegancia a su habla. En definitiva, era una manera

de diferenciarse del vulgo, que sólo sabía el inglés corriente.

Pero esas palabras, que en un principio fueron patrimonio exclusivo de la elite científica o social, forman parte

ahora de la riqueza lingüística general. Son usadas por todos en cualquier situación. Es como cuando, en

español, utilizamos la palabra «mariscal» sin saber que procede del vocablo alemán Marschall o decimos

tranquilamente «bar», olvidando que tiene origen inglés.

Pues lo mismo sucede en este idioma con los términos derivados del latín y el griego, en muchas ocasiones

recibidos a través del francés, el italiano o el español. No se trata de que usted memorice interminables

columnas de palabras. Simplemente, léalas y procure utilizar cada día varias de ellas.
