Summary

The perfect career for those with a strong mind and a love for critical thinking and puzzles.Wouldn’t you love to figure out why the ancient Chinese thought they were the only ones on earth? That’s the job of an anthropologists. They figure out a peoples’ interactions with other cultures.Sure, sure. They don’t get as much attention and love as the diggers (archaeologists), but, hey, someone has to be able to explain how pots from the Caddo made it on a Cherokee burial ground. Were they gifts? Were they stolen? These are the questions asked everyday by anthropologists. So, the field is not for the faint of heart… or mind. This is job for those that love taking on difficult and challenging puzzles, and that don’t crack under pressure.

Are you up to it?

College

The top anthropology program is widely considered to be at the University of Florida. Other top programs include the University of California in Los Angeles, University of California Santa Cruz, and University of Washington-Seattle.Again, this major is similar to the job field. It’s perfect for people who love to understand how things work and to piece together clues. This is a major that relies heavily on field work, similar to the archaeology major. The education requirements are similar to those of archaeology as well. An undergraduate degree is sufficient but it is suggested that a higher degree of education should be reached.

College

Arizona State University is considered to be the top institution for archaeology. It is ranked at the top along with schools like Texas A&M, University of Texas at Austin, Michigan State University, and University of Central Florida.Students that become Archaeology majors get to do more than assist at excavations. Students get the opportunity to explore remains of great natural occurrences, such as the Great Chicago Fire, the remains of an old Tabasco factory, or a forest where Gen. George Washington was believed to have camped with his men.Just like the job field, the major is filled with exciting day-to-day tasks that would hold anyone’s interest. An undergraduate degree (B.A. or B.S.) is sufficient enough to work in the field, though it is suggested to get a higher degree.

Summary

Archaeologists have the most hands on experience when it comes to historical jobs. One day you could be doing a dig to learn about the Incas and Conquistadors in Peru, the next you could be unearthing the bones of what could be an extinct animal. The field of archaeology, while a difficult one, is very rewarding. Everyday on the job you have a chance to be published for your next great discovery. This job is sure to keep even the most adrenaline obsessed people occupied for a long time. While you learn similar details as a geographer or historian, the information presents itself in a unique way. Come on, would you want to learn about the French and Indian War from a book or from seeing the actual bodies and weapons from the war?
