Winter brings the beauty of Pakistan’s Chitral Valley to An Lanntair. We launch into winter this year with a stunning exhibition of tapestries created by the female embroiderers of Pakistan’s Chitral Valley with Harris Tweed cloth, weaved here on the Isle of Lewis. Our arts programme this winter not only brings this innovative work to our shores, but also offers a whole host of opportunities to engage with the designer of the project, Adil Iqbal, to learn and be inspired by the work, and to take part in workshops. I’m also delighted to say we will be welcoming Willie Campbell and Friends back to An Lanntair this year to celebrate Hogmanay in style – get your tickets in quick, we’re expecting another sell out show! If you can’t make that, don’t worry, Breabach are with us on Saturday 2nd January, so get yourselves down to that to continue the festivities. And for all those panto lovers out there, I promise you won’t be disappointed this year. Stornoway Thespians present Alice in Wonderland from the 1st to 5th December and Cinderella will be here 13th to 16th January. And if all that wasn’t enough, comedian Craig Hill returns to An Lanntair on Friday 26th February! So, lots going on to keep those winter blues away. Twilling Tweeds & Hunarmand Hoost (Skilled Hands)

4 Dec – 6 Feb 2016

Pioneered by Adil Iqbal, an Edinburgh-based fashion designer, this project connects the weavers of the Outer Hebrides with the female embroiderers of Chitral on the North West Frontier of Pakistan. It encourages and supports creative design initiatives and provides an opportunity to document, interpret and broadcast the stories of both communities in words and images: the differences and the similarities. Proceeds go towards children’s schooling in the area. Adil said: ‘My aim when creating this collection was to create a bridge between communities and promote cultural awareness between the two countries ’.

Eilean | Island Pat Law and Mhairi Law 26th September – 25th October

A personal response to observations and conversations on Lewis. The result is a body of work with two parallel threads: Landscape based on moving image, drawings and discarded objects, merging past and present. And photographic portraits by Mhairi Law, of individuals who have grown from that environment. The opening on Lewis, will be split between the Stornoway harbour fish-shed and an Lanntair, and the traveling Horsebox used at both events.

Eilean | island: Adult workshopsSeptember 2015

In association with the Eilean I Island exhibition there will be a series of workshops combining the craft of net mending with story and poem. Local fisherman turned net-mender, Coy, will teach the basic skills of this age-old craft while Stornoway writer, Ian Stephen will use the nets as a metaphor for creating and catching the stories and poems of workshop participants.

Dmitry Onishchenko & Oksana Lesnichaya30 November, 8pm £12/£10

Award winning classical pianist Dmitry Onishchenko and Soprano singer Oksana Lesnichaya, a graduate of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory will perform a special classical concert in An Lanntair this Winter.

Dmitry has studied music all over the world and won numerous awards including the V International Vladimir Krainev Young Pianists’ Competition (2000), the III International Young Performers’ Competition in Enschede (2004) and the International Lysenko Competition (Kiev, 2007)and the Sydney International Piano Competition (2012, 3rd prize).

Lesnichaya made her debut at the Bolshoi Theater of Russia as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and has also sung Ksenia in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov at the Bolshoi.

As part of An Lanntair’s festive programme of events, folklorist Dr Margaret Bennett will give a talk on the Celtic Calendar and associated customs on Wednesday 9th December.

Her prize-winning books include Oatmeal and the Catechism (1999) and Scottish Customs from the Cradle to theGrave, (2004) and CD collaborations with her late son, Martyn, feature in theatre and film, including ‘The Black Watch’. She also spent some of her upbringing in Lewis, so is looking forward to sharing her knowledge of Oidhche Challain and other local traditions.

Each track on the new Iain Morrison album ‘Eas’ is based on ‘piobaireachd’, the classical music of the highland bagpipes. Although the melodies that have inspired this album may be several hundred years old, the songs have been written in Iain’s very own contemporary style. Iain’s father is Iain M. Morrison, one of the world’s leading voices and tutors in the world of piobaireachd. The musicians featured on the recording of ‘Eas’ will be joining Iain at An Lanntair.
