Cryptic’s multi-media, theatrical adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s seductive novel, Orlando, returns to the Glasgow stage this weekend. Following rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival, and sell-out success in Finland and Mexico, Orlando will run for just three performances at the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), Glasgow, before dazzling U.S. audiences in April. Orlando opens with the hero as a young man in Elizabethan England, and follows his transformations of fortune, love and gender in this multi-faceted, century-spanning quest for life and a lover. A sensuous and poetic epic of self-discovery, Woolf’s novel – a glorious ode to lover Vita Sackeville-West - has been described as ‘the longest and most charming love letter in literature’. Featuring an original soundtrack by composers Craig Armstrong and AGF, the production is directed by Cryptic’s Cathie Boyd, with actress Judith Williams as Orlando. Vocals, sonic textures and electronics are woven through Darrel Pinckney’s lauded adaptation of the Woolf text. The visual spectacle is brought to life by artists James Houston and Angelica Kroeger and unveils two groundbreaking new technologies developed by the Digital Design Studio at Glasgow School of Art: Living Canvas and Point Cloud Data Imaging. On Sat 29 March, 10am – 5pm, Dr Jane Goldman, Reader in English Literature at the University of Glasgow, hosts Unlacing Orlando, an exploration and celebration of Virginia Woolf's novel and its modern cultural legacies. The event is free but ticketed and bookings can be made via cca-glasgow.com. Orlando runs at CCA, Glasgow, from Thu 27 – Sat 29 March 2014 and makes its US debut at The Alexander Kasser Theatre, Montclair State University, New Jersey from 10 – 13 April 2014 www.cryptic.org.uk/orlando/ https://twitter.com/crypticglasgow www.facebook.com/glasgowcryptic

Born To Be Wide has announced an exhibition of Jannica Honey’s music photography, as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations. Taking place at Edinburgh record shop, Voxbox, it runs from 2 April until 20 May and includes a mixture of live and press shots. Titled, Born To Be Honey, it focuses on musicians who have played Born To Be Wide’s annual Edinburgh Night – which features ten acts performing ten-minute sets – and several bands who have showcased at the Wide Days convention. They include Honeyblood, Stanley Odd, Withered Hand, Roman Nose, Plum and Bart Owl. A special preview sponsored by Barney’s Beer, will take place on Thursday 27 March to mark the launch of the Wide Days print programme and will feature a live performance by Withered Hand. “Jannica has began photographing our events for the past two years, which is also when Voxbox opened, ” says Born To Be Wide and Wide Days founder Olaf Furniss.. “And both are very much part of the Wide family.” “I have always photographed people I connect with, friends and family,” says Honey, whose work has appeared in publications including Time Out, Vogue, The Guardian, Dazed & Confused, Gaffa and the LA Times. “It was the most natural thing to start working with these musicians, since most of them are my friends.” In addition to working with artists performing at Born To Be Wide events, she has also shot acts including The Horrors, King Creosote, Emma Pollock, The Killers and Frightened Rabbit.

“The original concept for Voxbox was to have exhibitions alongside the vinyl,” says Voxbox owner Darren Yeats. “It’s great to be able to feature the work of a renowned photographer like Jannica Honey, and tie this in with Born To Be Wide’s tenth anniversary.” GIGnotes: Born To Be Honey Photographic Exhibition @ VoxBox, 21 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh EH3 5AN Admission: Free. A keynote presentation on protecting music venues from closure and a workshop on getting the most of Youtube, have been added to this year’s Wide Days convention, which take place at Edinburgh’s Teviot Row House on 9-10 April. Beverley Whitrick will outline the strategy of the recently-launched Music Venue Trust, while Youtube’s Derk van der Woude is set to give a summary of how to maximise viewing and income from the streaming service. In a further boost to the programme, several additional speakers have confirmed their participation including professional songwriter Gary Clark, Melanie Gollin [Flux FM, Germany] and Matthias Böttcher [Rough Trade, Germany]. They will participate in a series of panels announced last week, with several hosted in partnership with the German Consulate. These include releasing and playing in Germany, as well as a focus on pioneering Hamburg label, Audiolith. This year’s event will see the first day focus on topics relating to live, with the second day covering topics relating to right holders [eg artists, musicians, managers]. “We are delighted to be able to add these speakers and presentations to our programme,” says Wide Days founder Olaf Furniss. “Their knowledge and advice will be indepensible for anyone working in music, regardless of their sector or genre.” Subjects include: a focus on Scotland’s Hydro arena; planning a tour; online services for promoting live events; a look at future technologies; a feedback session for delegates submitting tracks; a focus on who chooses music to feature in the media; preparing a digital release. As in previous years, most speakers participating in Wide Days will make themselves available for 15-minute meetings with delegates, and for the first time, the event will integrate a networking component during the lunch breaks. Accommodation deals are available with the new IBIS South Bridge hotel until March 28, with rates of £65 per night, including breakfast, [£75 for double occupancy]. A code will be made available upon purchase of a delegate pass. Additional deals are also available from two youth hostels, with dorm beds as low as £9 per night at the Edinburgh Backpackers [Cockburn Street] and Belushi's Hostel [Market Street] offering a 25% discount. Additional speakers confirmed for Wide Days 2014 are Drowned In Sound Founder, Sean Adams, BBC 6 Music Producer Michelle Choudhry, The Hydro director, John Langford, Atlantic Records A&R Jordan Whitmore and Deezer head of editorial, James Foley. They will join conference favourites Scott Cohen [founder of The Orchard], Keith Harris [PPL Director/Stevie Wonder manager] and the BBC’s Vic Galloway. In addition to the German Consulate, this year’s event sees Edinburgh College and the Scottish Music Industry Association join existing event partners, Eventbrite, PPL, the Musicians’ Union and EmuBands.

For the first time, interactive, participative performances for new-borns to two year-olds will be presented by Scotland’s national orchestra, in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. A trio of musicians and a drama artist will create an enchanting live music experience for the very young and their grownups. The performances are entitled Hup!, one of the most popular first spoken words for babies, when they want picked up. The young audience members will discover two violins, one cello, one raccoon, a very important tree and someone with a story to share. The relaxed thirty-minute performance is followed by the chance for the young audience to stay and play. Hup!, devised by Hazel Darwin-Edwards & Abigail Sinar and supported by TOTAL E&P UK Limited and Vibrant Aberdeen, is one outcome of Nickum (Doric for little scamp), a partnership project between Starcatchers, an organisation that specialises in performances and creativity for babies, toddlers and young children, and the RSNO. Nickum’s strategy is to provide a range of RSNO-led community activities in the north-east of Scotland for young people and their families. The performances for the very young are connected to the distribution of the Astar CD, a

free orchestral recording for all babies born in Scotland since October 2012, available through Scottish registry offices. The RSNO hopes to roll out the concept to other areas of Scotland over the next eighteen months. RSNO Director of Learning and Engagement Jenn Minchin: “Our first foray into presenting performances for the youngest of audiences will be especially rewarding, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the reaction of our small critics over the next week. It’s an important step for the RSNO, as this completes our portfolio of resources and performances for people of all ages, and is a natural progression from the distribution of the Astar CD, which started in October 2012, and, I’m glad to say, will be continued for a further year.”

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ member profile:

Callum Kenmuir "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

Glasgow born Callum Kenmuir has led a double musical life for many years, working as pianist and keyboardist in the field of popular music, while composing concert music for piano and orchestra, chamber groups, solo piano and voice. From his earliest years, Callum had the ability to improvise and harmonise. At the age of two, he was picking out melodies on the piano, and began lessons at five. Aged nine, he took an interest in jazz, which became his main enthusiasm for many years. He formed his first band (a skiffle group) playing banjo, while still in primary school, then a jazz band (playing piano) in secondary school. At eighteen, he joined Fergie MacDonald's Highland Dance Band as pianist, playing Scottish traditional music for dancing. This led to his first experience of recording, making three LP albums and an EP with the band, and a first experience of broadcasting on BBC programmes. A year and a half later, he was invited to join George Penman's Jazzmen playing trumpet, and worked with the band for periods over the next twelve years, sometimes playing piano or tuba. Apart from the piano, he has studied and played clarinet, trumpet, tuba and viola, and his wide-ranging musical interest has also involved him in jazz, traditional music and in amateur symphony orchestras. In 1972, a guitarist friend encouraged him to become involved in writing pop songs. With two other writers, the group Hope Street was formed and a publishing contract was obtained with Chappell Music. The group

recorded singles for EMI. In 1974, Callum won an international song competition in Malta, which encouraged him to pursue song writing. He next collaborated with another Glasgow songwriter, Harry Barrie, this time under contract to EMI Publishing. In this period, he also recorded a programme of ragtime piano music for Radio Clyde. From 1976, he led a 4-piece band in a Glasgow nightspot playing keyboards. The group played for dancing and backed cabaret acts. In 1978, the band was booked onto the Cunard cruise liner QE2 and subsequently on the Cunard Countess in the Caribbean. Mostly earning his living playing piano in 5-star hotels and piano bars in London's West End, Switzerland, Monte Carlo, Norway and his native Scotland, he has also travelled the world with Cunard aboard the QE2 and Cunard Countess, and with P&O Cruises aboard Aurora. Songwriting from the early 1970s, he was successively contracted to Chappell Music, EMI and independent producer/publisher, Larry Page, and remains a member of the Performing Rights Society. He is also a composer member of the Scottish Music Centre. Callum now lives in Italy. www.callumkenmuir.com

The Scottish Music Centre currently supports in excess of 100 composer, group/small business and corporate members. Offering a wealth of advantages, initiatives include the bi-monthly Composers' Digest and Exposed Melodies podcast series,

annual Composition Marathon, regular networking events and notification of valuable opportunities, extensive publicity and increased correspondence with national companies, chamber ensembles, soloists and festivals.

Scottish celtic rock band Gleadhraich have set themselves the task of transforming Scottish traditional music, and they already have the backing of an existing Scots music legend, Dougie Maclean. He said of their arrangement of My Generation/You Really Got Me: “It’s a

genius arrangement!” Their dream is simple: “We want to take the bagpipes to new heights.” They plan to achieve that by producing music that appeals to all generations – the antidote to Jimmy Shand!’. The four-piece band from Carnoustie hope to make the pipes a more accessible instrument to young people by being a rock band with pipes up front in order to encourage Scotland’s youth to take forward the baton of this piece of Scottish heritage while also allowing our native instrument to have the widespread appeal it deserves with older generations through demonstrating its versatility. With the band’s debut EP ‘Pipe Dreams’ set for release in April the band are excited to be doing just that. The band consists of four young Bravehearts: piper/guitarist/vocalist Craig Weir; electric guitarist /vocalist Ross White; bassist Graeme Ritchie and percussionist Paul Weir.

Barbara Dickson & Rab Noakes : ep : 'Reunited' release date - 14 April : www.barbaradickson.net // www.rabnoakes.com

To accompany their 2014 tour Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes have combined their voices to record an EP. Barbara and Rab have known one another for nearly fifty years and the songs recorded represent many areas they've explored together in that time. They met in the mid-’60s in Edinburgh. The place was the Foresthill Bar, aka the famous Sandy Bell's. The pub was the known hang-out for anyone interested in folksong and music. They both were, each having arrived there by a similar route. They are both from Fife, born there in 1947, and raised in the kind of quality public-housing that was available then.

The airwaves of the 1950s pre, during and post-rock'n'roll were full of great songs. All of this impressed Barbara and Rab, particularly the records of the Everly Brothers. On into the 1960s and the emergence of the Beatles and then Bob Dylan bounced each of them into an appreciation of folksongs. That rich mixture of songs from limitless sources appealed to them, and instilled in them an instinct for songs of interest wherever they're from. As an example, later in their lives they found they each had separate seminal experiences with the song 'Buttons and Bows'. A version of this appears on Rab's forthcoming 'I'm walkin' here' CD, sung by them both. They have sung together often over the intervening years and, in 2013, decided to put

together a tour with their two voices, two guitars and two rich experiences for a night of quality songs and performance. Back to the EP, which was recorded in one afternoon in John Cavanagh's Muirend ganghut studio. It captures the spirit, and the richness, of two people's unique experiences in the ever-interesting world of the popular song.

Button Up single : download Release Date: 1 December

The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle.

COREEN SCOTT Beyond The Sea Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now 'Beyond The Sea is the new album from Scottish singer Coreen Scott. Singing in French, English and Portuguese, the album is a collection of songs from around the world. From the haunting melodies of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes and Tom Wait's The Briar and the Rose to the thought-provoking lyrics of Weeping and the deceptively jaunty sound of Je ne veux pas travailler, Coreen’s voice soars above the beautiful instrumental melodies and tight-knit harmonies – there is something for everyone on this CD, including lovely interpretations of such classics as the Dylan's To Make You Feel My Love, Piaf’s La vie en rose, and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird, but also the more rhythmic South African Weeping, the Portuguese Manha de carnival and the lovely French La mer. CEILIDHCATU

NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name.
