GREENPOINT PUBLIC LIBRARY

is a unique communal space in the alluring neighborhood in north Brooklyn. the building blends in with the masonry townhouses of the neighborhood on the outside, and reveals its dynamic nature to its guests on the inside.

The letter facade helps the library to blend in with its mostly masonry neighbors. Similar to a brick pattern, a body of text reads as a volume from a distance,

yet the closer one approaches he or she can see the detail texture of the object

NEW WORK CITY

WAS THE WINNING PROJECT IN AN ANNUAL URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION BETWEEN TWO OF NYIT'S NEW YORK CAMPUSES.

IT WAS A GROUP EFFORT OF THREE STUDENTS NABI AGZAMOV, PATRICK MILLER, AND MIKE PANARESE.

I WAS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE WATERFRONT HISTORY RESEARCH, DEIGN PROCESSES. MY RESPONSIBILITIES ALSO INCLUDED RENDERING AND DIAGRAM DEVELOPMENT, AS WELL AS MODEL MAKING

Page 22: Nabi Agzamov

ManNAhatta was a small island in the center of a large and bountiful harbor. When the Dutch came to the new world They SETTLED THE TIP OF THE ISLAND, AND established a small town called new Amsterdam DUE TO THE SCARCITY

OF LAND, THE CITY WAS EXPENDED UNTO THE WATER FRONT.

The town would eventually become a part of the largest city in the u.s. And A major international destination.

CONNECTIONS WERE ESTABLISHED FROM BROOKLYN TO MANHATTAN BY CREATING THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE IN 1883 AND MANHATTAN BRIDGE IN 1909. THE DENSITY OF MANHATTAN ROSE AND SO DID ITS PROPERTY VALUE

WATERFRONT PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY. IT HARBORED INDUSTRIES And TRADING POSTS CREATING STABLE EMPLOYMENT FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NEW YORKERS. HOWEVER, THE SITUATION HAD CHANGED AFTER

DEINDUSTRALIZATION. THE WATERFRONT BECAME ONE OF THE LARGEST UNDERUTILIZED SPACES OF THE CITY

many issues plague this site at present. Besides the economic and social inequality that continues to exist today, a natural threat from the water will come to test new York city in the coming years. sea level rise by 6 feet by the end of this century. Additionally, the continued threat of storm surges will compound these rising

tides as they approach our city. Hurricane sandy demonstrated show vulnerable our city is still today

brooklyn navy yard acropolis

Acropolis - A raised area holding a building or cluster of buildings

During the thesis year I worked on a project that introduced project based learning institution to the postindustrial Brooklyn navy yard and its neighboring communities.

bny acropolis will not only arm the young minds with tools to challenge the contemporary climate, social, and economic issues, but also educate the surrounding communities about the values of sustainability, self-sufficiency and environmental awareness

At the end of his presidency in 1801 president John Adams authorizes construction of Brooklyn Navy Yard. The site operated as a ship building facility until 1966. Throughout its history the navy yard was expanded over the

wallabout bay.

The facility provided battleships for all of the major armed conflicts of 19th and 20th centuries. During world war ii the employment of the navy yard reaches its peak with over seventy thousand workers. However, after

the fire of US CONSTELLATION IN 1960 THE NAVY YARD WENT INTO DECLINE AND CLOSED ITS DOORS IN 1966

TODAY THE NAVY YARD IS A CENTER OF LOCAL INDUSTRY. MAJOR COMPANIES SUCH AS ETSY AND STEINER STUDIOS ARE NOW PROUD TENANTS OF THE BNY INDUSTRIAL PARK.

NEVERTHELESS THE SITE FACES MANY ISSUES INCLUDING SEA LEVEL RISE, WATER POLLUTION AND LACK OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Page 34: Nabi Agzamov

AS MOST OF THE SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY THE NEIGHBORING LEARNING INSTITUTIONS ARE NOT INVOLVED WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES

bny is not truly open to the public, it is isolated from the surrounding communities allowing only scheduled tours

During sandy the site greatly suffered from super storm sandy with more than half of the territory under water.

Connects the surrounding communities through public space. AND productive landscape

bny acropolis introduces project based which concentrates on talcking pressing issues of the site

Elevates the street level away from the flood plane with permeable platforms. INTRODUCES PROJECT BASED EDUCATION WHICH CONCENTRATES ON TACKLING PRESSING ISSUES OF THE SITE. THEREFORE
