The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, undoubtedly one of

the most eagerly anticipated sporting events in Poland,is just around the

corner. It isestimated that almost a million fans from Europe and around

the world will head to Poland for this tournament.There is no denying that

Euro 2012 will provide an excellent opportunity to promote our country

especially Polands host cities. Definitely, visitors attention will be

drawn to the ultramodern National Stadium the main Euro 2012

tournament venue, which will host three first-round matches, one

quarter-final, a semi-final and, most importantly, the opening match

combined with official opening ceremonies.

THE NATIONAL STADIUM BEFOREAND AFTERAs the whole sporting world begins

to countdown to the start of Euro

2012 and the organizers are busy

with nal preparations, we may stop

for a moment and go back to the

history of the National Stadium. It all

began with the opening of the 10th

Anniversary Stadiumin 1955. Raised

on the ruins of Warsaw destroyed

during the Second World War, the fa-

cility made a big splash from the very

beginning because it was built in a re-

cord time of 11 months. The stadium

could ofcially accommodateabout

71 thousand spectators. During 30

years, it was a venue for the most

signicant cultural and sports events

in our country. Unfortunately, in the

1980s, it fell into disrepairand its re-

novation was deemed unprotable.

The nal result was that, in 1989,the facility was leased to Damis

Sp. z o. o. that turned it into Jarmark

Europa, one of the largest market-

places in Europe. Nevertheless, the

market quickly became a hub of ille-

gal tradewhere, for little money, one

could buy anything from cigarettes

to weapons. In 2008, when Poland

and Ukraine were chosen the hosts

for the UEFA Euro 2012, it was de-

cided to close the marketplace and

build the National Stadium on the Fot. NCS/J. Konik

The faade of the new stadium re-

fers to Polands national ag in red

and white, and its shape resembles

a wicker basket. The National Sta-

dium is undoubtedly architecturally

unique, mainly due to its striking

roof structure that weightsabout

100 tons. The roof construction is

a system of steel cables radiating

from the ring, which rests on 72

steel columns, to the central spire

over the pitch.The roof is made of

berglassand covered with a teon

layer. Apart from the unique roof

construction, also other elements of

the stadium, such as a heated pitch,

faade lighting or modern stands

prove that the National Stadium

is designed according to the latest

technology, and is equal of other

European stadiums. At the sametime, it is the biggest investment in

sports infrastructurein Poland so far.

The capacityof the stadium is morethan one million cubic meters.

The facility has around 58,000seats on stands.

decyzjo zamkniciu targowiska i wybudowaniu

Stadionu Narodowego w miejscu poprzedniego

Stadionu Dziesiciolecia.

Fasada nowego stadionu nawizuje do biao-

-czerwonych barw polskiej agi narodowej, a jego

ksztat przypomina wiklinowy koszyk. Stadion Na-

Kubatura stadionu liczy ponad 1 milion m3. Obiekt ma okoo 58 000 miejsc na trybunach.
