NCAA DIII Cross Country Individual Academic Awards – 2015

NEW ORLEANS — Abrah Masterson and Josh Thorson proved during the 2015 cross country season that they were forces on thecourse.

After all, Masterson captured the individual women’s title at theNCAA DivisionIII Cross Country Championships and Thorson was no worse than third atfour of the five meets in which he competed, including a second­place finish atNCAAs.

Masterson and Thorson also excelled in the classroom. For that, Masterson andThorson were named NCAA Division III Scholar Athletes of the Year onFriday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association(USTFCCCA).

As a sophomore from Granby, Colorado, Masterson posted a 3.605 GPA whiledouble majoring in biochemistry/molecular biology and French. Masterson is thefirst athlete from Cornell College to win the award.

Thorson is a sophomore from Plymouth, Minnesota and maintained a 3.87 GPAas he majored in graphic design. This is the first time an athlete from UW­EauClaire has been named Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Masterson and Thorson were chosen for the honor by being the top individualfinishers at NCAAs with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.

In total, there were 352 women from 207 teams and 268 men from 151 teams

who nabbed USTFCCCA All­Academic honors. To earn that distinction, student­athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher and finish in the top 25percent at their respective regional.

Back in November, 70 student­athletes (35 from each gender) garnered All­America recognition. Of those, 27 women landed All­Academic honors, comparedto 17 men.

There were 25 women that posted perfect GPAs (4.00), while 12 men did the same.
