MAY 2016 President’s Message: Last year when I wrote this message we were just getting out from under mountains of snow. This year hopefully we are coming out of a very dull, dreary, grey winter. The pussy willows are going full force and the trees are budding out. Now for a bit more sunshine!! I know that I am among those who are not completely comfortable with all the new social media BUT right now I am bouncing between working on newsletter material and watching a live feed of an American eaglet hatching. How would any of us be able to do that without the internet. Which brings me to our website. We hope you have been checking it out especially if you have misplaced your newsletter and want to see what we have been up to. Our Vice-President, Jefferson Davis, is now responsible for the Website Committee and will be working with Frances Thompson and Aaron McCasland, our webmasters, to be sure that it is kept current. If there is anything you would like to see on the site please let us know by leaving a message at the club. Our chorus has been actively participating in the process of reinventing the saengerfest which historically has been held every three years. As the number of choruses in the NYS Saengerbund has dwindled it has become apparent that some changes need to be made. We have responded to a call for comments and have completed the follow-up questionnaire. By the time you read this newsletter there will have been a Bundes Music Committee meeting where the responses were reviewed. At the convention in October decisions will be made about changes. If you are a former singer and have any questions or comments about this process please let me know. Everyone’s input is important. We look forward to seeing you at our June 5 th concert when we will be joined by The Hudson Valley Youth Chorale. For this concert our English songs come from the Shaker tradition. Music and dance are an integral part of the lives of this religious sect which came to the United States in 1774. You may be familiar with their song “Simple Gifts” which we will be singing and which Aaron Copland adapted in his score for the ballet “Appalachian Spring.” I wish all of you a wonderful summer filled with brilliant colors. I hope you all have successfully

endured and survived this long,

never ending, and arduous winter

and enjoyed a most pleasant early

Eastertide.

The birds are singing, the flowers

are blooming, DDeerr LLeennzz iisstt ddaa and

it’s almost show time. Music

directors and singers around the state have been

sharpening their choral skills, exercising their vocal

cords, and reenergizing their minds and souls in

anticipation of their upcoming Frühlings Konzerte.

SSave OOur SSängerfeste

As reported in the January newsletter, our mutual

goal: to promote and advance German culture and

tradition through music and education hasn’t changed;

our ability to sustain this goal has. With the decline of

singers in our German choruses, our sängerfest

participation is at an all time low. We are now at a

critical point in sustaining our German choral ideals

and sängerfest traditions. We cannot continue to

meet as viable choruses, unless we develop

alternatives to our traditional sängerfest events. To

make any improvements we must redefine our

processes and readjust our procedures.

Each of the active choruses in the New York State

Sängerbund has met with their director to discuss

and understand their position on the pros and cons

of the current sängerfest format; what to keep, what

to change, what can be improved, and what to cut

out. Each chorus has listed and forwarded their

suggestions on the length and frequency of

sängerfest, financial considerations, and major

events: Welcome, Mass Chorus Concert, After-

Glow, Competitive Prize Singing, and Farewell.

We have received these specific suggestions,

merged them into a survey questionnaire, and

distributed it to the choruses so they can review the

overall viewpoints from throughout the sängerbund.

The combined results of the survey questionnaire

will help the delegates at the Spring Bundes Music

Committee meeting to develop a preliminary

modified sängerfest outline with sufficient details to

understand a viable approach to our shrinking

chorus dilemma. Final discussions to alternatives to

our traditional sängerfest events can be ratified at

the annual convention in Buffalo.

I gratefully acknowledge the hard work and

dedication of all the singers, delegates, officers, and

directors who participated in this research for their

dedication, inspiration, and thoughtful deliberation.

We are all committed to support and sustain the

New York State Sängerbund and dedicated to its

future development and success.

It is spring and to some it seems that something has been missing at the beginning of this year. Well it is not the Stammtisch! Since the beginning of this year we have met six times. Still we are meeting every other week except if there are unforeseen events which there haven’t been so far. Our smallest group this year has been four people, our largest eleven. I am particularly happy for some members coming back to our gathering after they had a rather long absence from the Stammtisch. Also, I am very happy to mention that we have had some new participants joining us! Without any doubt there is an endless supply of topics that we are able to talk about and it never gets dull. From dialects, cooking recipes, presidential campaign protagonists to major topics such as the refugee crisis or interesting books, we talk about everything that we want to!

We have even had conversations in four different languages, although of course German is the language that we are using in an almost exclusive manner. An absolute highlight this year so far has been a very generous gift of a bottle of fresh made Maple Syrup to each one of us by our dear friend from the Bruderhof Community/Mount Academy! And yes, of course, we still have homemade meals, mostly soups or stews and delicious homemade bakery goods.

We are hoping to attract more new participants. Everybody who enjoys speaking and listening to German is herzlich wilkommen! Our next meetings will be: May 5th, May 19th, June 2nd and June 16th. At this point it is not clear if we will meet during summer or take a break! For more information please contact me at 845-527-4925 or email me at [email protected]

The Women's Health & Fitness Expo was started

in 2000 and has become the largest event of its

kind in New York State. This year, the Annual

Women's Health & Fitness Expo features:

o Over 100 booths and exhibits

o Over 20 free health screenings

o Seminars and workshops

o Healthy Food Court with cooking demos and

samples from area chefs

o Ongoing exercise and fitness demonstrations

o "The Doctor is In"booth featuring private

consultations with specialists

o Book signings by noted authors

o Spa treatments

o Complementary disciplines (aromatherapy,

stress reduction techniques, etc.)

The Expo presents everything from traditional

medical modalities to alternative health practices,

fitness and cooking demonstrations, and much

more. The overall focus is prevention and

learning, and each woman will take something

different away from her experience at the Expo.

Dr. Debra Karnasiewicz is the founder and

director of the Women's Health and Fitness

Foundation and an internist with a thriving

medical practice. Her responsibilities, including

coordination of dozens of community outreach

programs from osteoporosis screenings to breast

cancer awareness seminars, helped convince her of

the necessity of encouraging women to spend more

time and energy on taking care of their own needs.

"Most of us tend to fragment our health into

little compartments - what we eat, how or if we

exercise, medical check-ups, meditation, taking

vitamins or supplements or medications - but the

various disciplines are not at odds with each

other," says Dr. Karnasiewicz. "

The approach and focus of our Expo is very

unique; we ' bring it all together' in one place so

women can choose what appeals to them.

Becoming more health-conscious is a process and

it's different for everybody. We give women

access to the best information and experts in the

fields of health, nutrition and fitness."

Join thousands of women to learn, unwind, ask

questions and get all the tools you need for

healthier living! This is a day for women and

their families.

Over 150 exhibits. 20+ free health screenings

(osteoporosis, blood pressure, glucose,

depression, body fat, and others). Informative

seminars, workshops and fitness demos. Private

mini-consultations with specialists at “The

Doctor is In” booth. A healthy cooking food

court, Spa area, and More!

Miller Middle School is location at 65 Fording Place

Road Lake Katrine, NY. It is off of Neighborhood

Road about 1 Mile North of Tech City.

In our last issue we reported that our member Gertrude Asendorf’s 78-foot-tall Norway spruce tree was cut down at her Gardiner home on Route 44-55. It was shipped to Midtown Manhattan, decorated, and brought joy to millions as the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

Well, after the season is over you just can’t put a tree that size out on the curb for pick-up. It was sent to a lumber mill, cut up, and returned to the Hudson Valley. The lumber will be used to build a Habitat for Humanity home in Newburgh. Now that’s Recycling!

The treasurer’s position has changed dramatically

from the days of reporting bills paid and income

received with perhaps five items in each category.

Ever changing laws, rules and regulations require

greater diligence on the part of our treasurer than

ever dreamed of even in the 20th

century. Our

thanks to Angela for doing such an excellent job.

We cordially welcome you to the Kingston Maennerchor and Damenchor! We are happy to greet you and encourage your participation in as many future functions as possible. Your continued support is sincerely welcomed and appreciated. Your attendance and participation is a wonderful way to enjoy the fellowship of our members and share in our camaraderie and gemütlichkeit. We hope that you enjoy our events and join us with renewed determination that the Kingston Maennerchor and Damenchor, will continue to flourish and prosper.

The mission of our organization, as stated in our bylaws, is "the preservation and promotion of German culture, heritage, and traditions through music and song. As part of that mission, we have provided scholarship awards for almost thirty years to area high school graduating seniors

Eligibility requires that applicants maintained high academic standards in high school, studied German for two or more years, and were involved in a music-related activity. Throughout the years, the applications reflected an exceptional group of young adults who showed excellence and achievement in both their academic and personal pursuits.

Applications for the 2015 scholarship Awards were received only from Red Hook High School students. The selection of awards was, therefore, handled differently than in previous years. With our club's approval, the committee selected one $300.00 award and two- runners-up award of $150.00 each.

Congratulation to Joseph Lewis, who was awarded $300.00, and Shane Digan and Brandon Voll, who each received $150.00.

It was a pleasure to welcome our winners at our June 7th spring concert. Best wishes for continued success in their future endeavors.

Many thanks to Red Hook Central School German teachers, Aaron McCasland and Fran Thompson and Erica Kreider-Mueller (retired), who helped instruct and guide Red Hook's German language students. I am pleased to note that they are also members of our organization.

With support of our club's members, $300.00 was also awarded to the Hudson Valley Youth Chorale, directed by Mathew Camara. The Chorale was created to enhance the lives of children by offering them the opportunity to strive for excellence in choral singing in a non-competitive and nurturing environment. These boys and girls from the 3'd through 8th grades have been delighting audiences since 1995. They sing at concerts at our hall and perform in other venues. I encourage you to attend their enthusiastic, enjoyable performances'.

A big "Thank you" to Linda Koelmel, who was Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee from 2005 to 2014. We appreciate that you stepped up to the plate when there was an opening for that assignment. You did a terrific job. Thank you also to Anne Hatesaul Lane, for her support and assistance in selecting this year's winners.

Annemarie Harms, Committee chairperson

TTAALLEENNTT CCOORRNNEERR As you may or may not know we have a

“hooker” amongst us – traditional and punch

rug hooker that is. Hildegard Edling has been

honored by having a photo of her “RRaabbbbiittss iinn tthhee

RRoouunndd”” Wool on Wool punched pillow chosen

for the RReeeetthh RRuugg RReettrreeaatt 22001166 brochure. Reeth

is located in the Yorkshire Dales of northern

England. Her piece will travel to the retreat so

that the students can have a close look at how

this technique is done.

Meanwhile Franz Heigemeir continues to

astound with new and ever more creative ideas.

Lately, instead of working with a brush he’s

been using an ax. “I am fascinated with the

texture of split wood” says Franz. This piece

called “EEaarrllyy SSppaanniisshh GGaalllleeoonn” is only 14” wide.

It was in a juried show at the Woodstock Art

Society and was purchased the very first day of

its showing. Franz now believes that, “change is

sometimes good”.

Congratulations Franz, we just wonder what he

will do next.

Show Us Your Stuff

We know you’re out there, we know you are doing it! You’re crocheting, knitting, gardening, hiking, visiting scenic places, or preparing great food. Don’t bury your skills under a rock. Whatever your hobby, whatever you enjoy doing; take a picture, tell your story, and share your talent with us.

TThhrreeee BBaarriittoonneess There once were three baritones who were good

friends; brothers in music. They enjoyed

singing and working together at the

männerchor, and challenging each other with

humor in camaraderie and friendship.

On the 4th

of July in 1986, while the Tall Ships

were sailing in New York Harbor celebrating

the reopening of the Statue of Liberty, Franz

Brendle brought his nephew to the JFK Airport.

He took the long route via NJ and the

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge so Michael could

see the tall sails before he returned to Germany.

A few weeks later God called Franz to join His

heavenly chorus. We said our final Abschieds-

gruß on his 49th

Birthday.

This July mark’s the 30th Anniversary of our

former president’s passing. We still miss him

dearly, cherish his memory, and always remember

his generous, joyful, and pleasant personality. He

lived his life with dignity and class. We keep him

in our hearts and maintain his legacy as an

inspiration to continue our German heritage.
