Dear Fellow Parishioners and Disciples of Jesus,

I am very happy to have this opportunity to tell you something about how people become Catholic at Padre Serra Parish. But first, let’s go back 2,000 years!

In the final verses of St. Matthew’s Gospel, we hear the risen Jesus speak these last words to his disciples: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teachingthem to observe all that I have commanded of you.” (Matt 28:19-20) These verses are often referred to as the“Commissioning of the Disciples” and it is one of the most powerful scenes in the New Testament. Jesus iscommissioning not just his eleven remaining apostles, but all of us as well.

During the first three centuries of the Church, becoming a Christian was a gradual process of apprenticeship in a way oflife. Various rites marked the seekers’ progress. After several years of living with and learning the lifestyle of theChristian community, the “catechumens” became full members on the night before Easter through baptism, anointing withsacred oil (now called “confirmation”), andreceiving Eucharist for the first time.

In the early fourth century, when the EmperorConstantine declared Christianity the officialreligion of the empire, all this changed. Peoplebecame members of the Church (sometimesforced) with little or no formation. By the fifthcentury, initiation of infants was the norm.Eventually baptism, confirmation, and firstreception of Eucharist were separated bymonths and then by years.

In the twentieth century, missionaries onceagain began using the apprenticeship model ofthe early Church. They revived the use of theancient rites to mark the progress of thoseseeking to follow the way of Jesus. Encouraged by the authenticity and success of the process, the bishops at Vatican IIpromulgated the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). This is once again how adults and children who havereached the “age of reason” (about 7 years old) become Catholic.

At Padre Serra Parish we have fully implemented the RCIA as a year-round process. Whenever anyone comes to usseeking to become Catholic, they are able to start right away. Our “apprentices” are formed by the Gospels, worshippingwith us and participating in the life of the parish including works of service. Gradually they grow as disciples of Jesusalong with us. Yes, they gather during the week with catechists for discussion of Catholic teaching and traditions, but theybecome Catholic by “rubbing shoulders” with all of us. In this way, we all are members of the parish initiating team, accepting Jesus’ commission to “make disciples of all nations.”

If you or anyone you know is interested in finding out more about the Catholic Church, please don’t hesitate to email me [email protected] or call (805) 482-6417 ext 331. All questions and inquiries are welcome!

Blessings,

Catherine ShadduckCoordinator of Initiation

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? It isour greatest joy, as well as our mission as a community, to welcomenew members. The RCIA is a gradual process of formation for thoseinterested in experiencing the Catholic faith. The process isdesigned for individuals who are seven years or older who are notbaptized, those baptized in other Christian traditions, and adults whowere baptized in the Catholic Church but never celebrated thesacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. It is a faith journey thatencourages participants to broaden and deepen their prayer life, toknow God through the scriptures, to come to know themselves morefully, and to participate more actively in parish life. For more information, please contact Catherine Shadduck,Coordinator of Initiation, at (805)482-6417 ext 331 [email protected].
