This is a pie chart which shows the way Americans spend their money. Americans spend over $1.2 trillion a year on goods and services. Basically, American consumers spend their money in roughly eleven different ways. More money goes for food, drink, and tobacco than for any other single expense; consumers spend 23% of each dollar in this way. However, if we combine housing with household operation, we can say that people spend the largest percentage of their money, or 30%, on a home and its maintenance. Americans spend less on medical care, 9%, than on transportation, 13%. Clothing accounts for a higher percentage than recreation: 8% in contrast to 7%. The amounts of money for personal business and education are a bit lower, making up 3% and 4% respectively. The lowest percentage goes for personal care, religious and welfare activities, and foreign travel. Each of these accounts for 1% of the average consumer’s dollar.
