NEW ZEALAND KUNG FU WUSHU FEDERATION PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2019

By Glen Keith 格兰 凯思 President, New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation Inc.

Ni-hao and season’s greetings from the Executive of the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation. We wish you all a Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year, and a very safe journey on your travels.

Introduction This report covers developments and key activities of the Federation for the period Jan-Dec 2019. I would like to thank members for their ongoing loyalty and support and welcome our new members into the New Zealand Wushu Family. Next year is the Federation’s 30-Year Anniversary (1990-2020), so well done to everyone who has lasted the distance and to those just starting their journey, during what is an exciting time for wushu development in New Zealand.

Wushu Growth In New Zealand The Federation has continued to grow in club membership and student numbers. A special welcome to all new members over the year, many of whom participated in either our World Tai Chi and Qigong Day and/or our National Kung-Fu Wushu Championships.

Auckland Wushu Association Nine months on from its formation in April 2018, the Auckland branch of the Federation (AWA) is growing from strength to strength under the Chairmanship of Peter Gordon, Vice Chairman Wei Zhao, and Committee Members David Wong, Diana Lau, Delia Wang and others. There is still a vacant position on the committee for a Sanda representative. Significant achievements, covered further in this report, include successfully hosting the 2019 World Tai Chi & Qigong Day and the 2019 “Xiang Shang” National Kung-Fu Wushu Championships, both in Auckland, on behalf of the Federation. Both had record numbers of participants and received positive feedback from competitors, officials and spectators. Well done Auckland Wushu Association!

Wellington Wushu Association In line with the Federation’s Regional Development Plan, the ‘Wellington Wushu Association’ (WWA) has just recently been formed with the full agreement of the Federation Executive. The WWA also has a trading name if required of ‘Wellington Wushu’ or ‘Wushu Wellington’, followed by the strapline - (Chinese Martial Arts - on behalf of the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation Incorporated). The purpose of the formation of the WWA is to act on behalf of the Federation to promote the Objects detailed in the Federation’s National Constitution. Accordingly, the Federation Executive will maintain oversight and general direction of the activities of WWA.

Promoting the Objects of the Federation includes to promote, develop and unite all forms of Chinese Martial Arts (under the umbrella of the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation), including but not limited to: traditional kungfu, modern (sport) wushu, tai-chi (including modified tai chi such as that designed for falls prevention and rehabilitation), qi-gong, other health related wushu, and sanda. Modern wushu is as promoted by the International Wushu Federation.

The Federation Executive has confirmed that the first appointment to the Wellington Wushu Association ‘Interim Management Committee’ will be Mr Julian Paul as Interim Chairperson. The Federation Executive will work with Julian in the coming weeks to identify the remaining members, one of which must be a Sanda representative. The maximum number of committee members is currently six. Julian is also a Board Member for a Kungfu organisation called Nam Pai Chuan, which became a member of the NZ Kung-Fu Wushu Federation earlier this year.

Wellington Wushu Association - First Event The WWA will look to host a small competition, open to all NZKWF members on Sat 4 April 2020 in Wellington, which will include traditional kung-fu, tai chi, modern wushu and sanda, plus guest demonstrations. Please address all enquiries in the first instance to Julian Paul on 021-120-6227 or by email at [email protected].

Federation Key Roles / Focus Areas As discussed at last year’s AGM, the Federation is still looking for energetic and committed volunteers to take the lead across several key portfolio areas that are central to the success of the Federation moving forward. These include National Events Coordinator, National Fundraising Coordinator, National Sanda Development Squad Coordinator, National Secretary and National Membership Coordinator - the last two could be combined. Please direct all enquiries to Glen Keith at [email protected] or mobile 021-283-0927.

“XIANG SHANG” NZ NATIONAL KUNG-FU WUSHU CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019

This year’s National Kung-Fu Wushu Championships were held on Sat 9 November 2019 for the second time at the Auckland Netball Centre, 7 Allison Ferguson Drive, St John Auckland. Building on the success of 2018, the championships saw another ‘Team Points Collection Competition’ (in Taolu) and another open Sanda category called ‘King of Sanda’. Both events were a great success. We also trialled two new Sanda age categories for Children 9-11 years and Juniors 12-14 years, in addition to our existing categories for Youth 15-17 years and Adult 18-40 years. The 2019 Championships had a great turn out both from competitors and spectators, with a record number of competitor events across Taolu and Sanda. Special thanks to Wei Zhao and Peter Gordon for doing a huge amount of work in helping to organise the Nationals. Thanks also to Head Judges: Orlando Garcia, Lucy Hannah and Wenjun (Camille) Zhu for Taolu, Dyann Stewart for Sanda, and Anthony Stewart as Head Sanda Platform Judge - and to all the support judges, officials, volunteers. A very successful event from all accounts.

Pictured below is the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation’s National Coach Wei Zhao (far left), National Development Squad Coach Wenjun Zhu ‘Camille’ (back row second from right) and Huibin (Dragon) Zhou (far right) with members of the ‘NZ Wushu Club’ who won the 2019 Team Points Collection Competition and Trophy.

How it works! Each athlete may choose two of their events to participate in collecting points for their team. Team athletes and their events must be chosen prior to the Championships. Each time a team member comes in the top ten (10) places for an event they will collect points as follows: 1st place 5 points, 2nd place 4 points, 3rd place 3 points, 4th-6th place 2 points, 7th-10th place 1 point.

Congratulations to Wei Zhao and his Auckland based club for taking out the event for two

years in a row. The team points collection competition was first introduced in 2018 at the

National Kung-Fu Wushu Championships.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO DAVE THEW - GUINESS WORLD RECORD - TAI CHI On Friday 26 April 2019 at 9:30am, Tai Chi Master Dave Thew started his attempt to break the Guinness world record (previously 29 hrs) for the longest ever Tai Chi marathon, all to raise money for the Cancer Society!! Dave’s goal was to break the 30-hour mark and was required to perform continuous Taiji with only a 5-minute stop every hour.

SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO ANTHONY AND DYANN STEWART

Anthony and Dyann - “World Class in New Zealand” - have been the driving force behind our successful Sanda events for many years. Anthony, as Head Platform Judge, keeping a masterful eye and making quick but accurate decisions as fighters engage in full-contact combat. Dyann as Head Sanda Judge, confirming registrations on the day and looking after the weigh-ins (and the all too often last-minute changes to the draw!), making hard calls when needed, keeping the audience informed and engaged with the fights, and making sure the sideline judges, statistical recorder and timekeeper all work together like clockwork.

In addition to his Lei Tai Judging duties, Anthony also had the role of personally contacting and meeting with various clubs to run small workshops to go over the rules and regulations of Sanda, including how the points system works and demonstrating Sanda moves where appropriate. Anthony also organised and run the Federation’s Sanda Coaching Courses, where participants would be officially recognised and encouraged to Judge at the next Federation event. Anthony’s efforts have been appreciated by the clubs and individuals concerned, many of whom are from other disciplines such as MMA, Kick-Boxing and Karate.

But wait there’s more… Anthony has also had the lead role and responsibility for the set-up of the Lei Tai Platform the night before every national event and then organising the pack-down at the end of a long day and reloading it back into the container. No mean feat by any stretch of the imagination and one that requires a very structured approach, lots of patience, stamina and the ability to motivate around 10-15 volunteers to all work together as a team.

Dyann and Anthony will still be around, but have more than earned a well-deserved rest and we expect to see them relaxing as spectators at our key events from here on in. And maybe offering a little guidance and wisdom to our new Head Judge and Head Platform Judge, and of course advising on how best to assemble and dismantle the Lei Tai in record time!!

Anthony and Dyann - Thank you both for doing an amazing job for such a long time and I’m sure everyone will miss your presence, dedication, smiles, energy and great teamwork at our events. You leave big shoes to fill. Glen Keith - President, NZ Kung-Fu Wushu Fed.

WORLD TAI-CHI QI-GONG DAY - 27 April 2019

For over two decades, a quiet subtle phenomenon has grown across the planet. Each year, on the last Saturday of April, in hundreds of cities in over 80 nations, spanning 6 continents. World Tai Chi & Qigong Day mass teach-ins and exhibitions have been held around the planet all on the same day - creating a worldwide wave of Tai Chi and Qigong. At 10 o’clock in the morning of Saturday 27 April 2019, the Auckland Wushu Association event began when 350 people from 19 different Tai Chi groups gathered to celebrate together.

WUSHU PERFORMANCE - SKY CITY CONVENTION CENTRE

The performance by the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation Taolu Development Squad, was part of the Chao Shan General Association of New Zealand hosting the 20th Convention of Teochew International Federation, which was held in two parts - from March 17-19, and from September 27-29 2019. The Convention was an opportunity to promote New Zealand tourism, commerce, logistics and educational products to nearly 2,000 overseas industry investors, and of course was great exposure for Wushu and the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation. NZKWF President Glen Keith was in the audience and can vouch that it was a first-class dynamic performance put on by the group.

Special thanks to Wei Zhao and Wenjun Zhu ‘Camille’ for organising a successful and professional performance

NOT QUITE AN EVENT - BUT AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR EVENTS!!

We are currently looking for a new home in 2020 for our 40-foot container, which houses our Lei Tai Fighting Platform, our Rubber Interlocking Mats, our Taolu Performance Carpet and our Sanda Protective Equipment/Armour. We are also looking for a new paint job from a friendly sign-writer wanting to see their work on show every time we have a national event! Ideally, we would like a ‘fees-free’ storage arrangement as we have been fortunate to have since we first purchased the container many years ago. Any and all ideas are welcome as to where we might find its new home in Auckland, or how we might be able to find ongoing sponsorship to cover a commercial arrangement, which could be around $1,500 per year.
