a long standing relationship with
you and your students. We appre-
ciate all of the administration
support as well. What a great
community we have!
We had approximately 50 students repre-
senting 9 different schools, 6 school
districts, and 14 dance studios. The ages
were from 9th-12th grade, male and
female, and some that traveled from
Baytown and Coldspring, Texas just to
attend the event. 6 professors from four
Universities including University of Texas-
Austin, Texas Women's University, Univer-
sity of Houston, and Texas State Univer-
sity lead and engaged the students from
9am-1:15pm.
The classes were inspiring, fun, and
thought provoking. We saw a special light
in the students' eyes as they were experi-
encing something new for the first time.
We watched them laugh, become com-
fortable with one another, and work tire-
lessly for almost 4 hours. We must thank
Tina Curran, David Justin, Gladys Keeton,
Melissa Noble, Teresa Chapman, and
Kaysie Seitz Brown for bringing such
talent, enthusiasm, and spirit to this or-
ganization and event. You made this an
experience that the students will
not forget.
The students in attendance were
polite, hardworking, and inspira-
tional. We are so very grateful to
the teachers that helped promote
this event on campus/studio,
encourage students to attend,
and assisted with registration.
Without you, this event would not
be possible. We hope your pas-
sion for our profession will con-
tinue to spread to your students
and grow this organization fur-
ther. A special thank you to Stony
Point for all that they did to pro-
mote and prepare and graciously
host the location for the event. It
was so very much appreciated!
Another thank you to the studio
owners/companies/teachers that
helped share the event through
social media, at your studio/
school, and even attended the
event in person. We hope to have

Karen Searles and Jamie Hatley
attended the Texas Dance Educa-
tors Association (TDEA) annual
convention in Houston. They were
able to speak to the entire mem-
bership as well as present a work-
shop on spreading TFDE across
the state in order to support future
dance educators.
They met with people in the exhibit
area as well as networking
of our members and

All State Dancers at TDEA 2014 Convention

In 2008, managed by Round Rock
ISD dance teachers TFDE began as
a small district chapter for Seniors
only.
Over the years, this chapter has
grown into a regional chapter. After
consultation with representatives
from TMEA’s Texas Future Music
Educators, we decided to take big
steps with TFDE. We opened mem-
bership up to all high school grade
levels and to college and teacher
members; invited studio dancers;
added a website, email, and so-
cial media accounts; developed a
logo, created a Letter Jacket
patch, developed membership
benefits; began collecting mem-
bership fees; and published our
1st newsletter.
The Austin Area chapter currently
has 73 high school, college, and
teacher/supporter members from
across the state.
We have a Facebook group of
over 100 and maintain a FB
page and Group, and manage
Twitter, Google+, YouTube ac-
counts.
This fall we sent a proposal to
the TDEA board asking for official
recognition of TFDE by TDEA and
are so very pleased that they
accepted and will now function
as the parent organization of
TFDE!
The first TFDE letter jacket
patches went out to students
at the end of February!

VERONICA BOCCARDO, Currently a dance major at University of Texas-Austin, formerly a student at Westwood
High School and Austin School of Classical Ballet
1. When/where did you start dancing? What drew you to dance? I started dancing Ballet when I was five years
old in Caracas, Venezuela. I used to be a very shy girl and my mom thought it good for me to perform in front of people
to get rid of my fear.
2. What has been the biggest change from high school to college? The biggest change from High School to col-
lege has been between balancing out my schedule and eating correctly. It is hard for a dance major to have an equal
maintenance of sleep, good academic stance, dance, social life, and more important eating properly. Because you spend most of your
time being both physically and mentally drained throughout the day, I've managed to listen to my body and started taking vitamin sup-
plements to sustain energy longer without crashing as well as eating super fruits like kiwi, coconut, or bananas.
3. What dance classes do you take as a Freshman and how many hours a day are dance related? As a freshman, you are re-
quired to take Ballet and Contemporary technique classes here at the department of dance. Regularly, around 16 hours a week are
dance related activities.
4. If you could dance with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why? It would be such an honor to dance with
Svetlana Zakharova because she is able to portray not just characters and wonderful extensions, but show grace through her strength
and as dancers know the balance between the two elements are so difficult to balance in between. Seeing Zakharova gives higher inspi-
ration to push through my own boundaries.
5. What are your future goals? My future goals as of now is to graduate with a teaching certificate as a B.F.A. Dance major to start
teaching as well as simultaneously start looking towards future auditions for companies as a professional dancers. It's still an open fu-
ture with many doors and opportunities that I hope to grasp!
6. And funny stories from you first semester of college? First semester of college.. haha I had a production lab class where I was
working wardrobe for "Fall for dance" show and when we were washing the costumes i didn't realized that I had grabbed one of the belts
(or undies really) of the guys dancers without noticing! woops!
7. If you could give advice to high school dancers wanting to study dance in college? My advice to future students who want to
be dance majors is to go full out and grab as many opportunities as you can. Networking is key to open many doors, but also to have fun
and further explore your passion. Also, be careful with food choices because you are what you eat, I've seen many with poor nutrition
who become more prone to injuries, so always fuel your body!
LYNDSEE LEMACKS, Currently a Senior at Harker Heights High School (Crimson Belles) and student at Spotlight Dance Company
1. When/where did you start dancing? What drew you to dance? I started dancing when I was 18 months at Dance Extreme. I'm not
sure why my mom decided to put me in it, but I've loved it ever since.
2. Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration would have to go to two people. Ms. Crystal Vega one of my dance instructors
who has inspired me not only in dance but in life in general to become something great and to make people remember you. And Kher-
ington Payne I love watching her perform, she's my dance inspiration.
3. If you could dance with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and why? There are so many people I would love to dance
with I couldn't just pick one. There are so many great legacies out there to come close to one would be breath taking.
4. What are your future goals? I want to become a high school math teacher and teach dance at the high school I attend. I want to be
an educator because I love teaching and helping others.
5. Do you have any funny/embarrassing dance stories? I have plenty of embarrassing dance stories. I fall asleep
quite a bit back stage and several times right before a performance and it doesn't always end up being the way it
was choreographed once I go on stage.
6. If you could give advice to young dancers today, what would you say? My advice to young dancers today would
be never stick to just one style; always try new things and if you don't get it right away keep trying. The more you
know and learn, the easier other dance steps may be. Trying new things broadens your knowledge and ability so
never give up or feel embarrassed! Stick with it, it's worth it!!
Meghan Bowman began her dance training as a child at
her mother’s dance studio as in Florida. At a young age
she was able to train under Henry LeTang and Andy
Blankenbuehler. Meghan has performed in several indus-
trials for Taco Bueno and Galderma, and was lead dancer
and assistant choreographer of Urban Dance and Cheer,
an instructional hip hop DVD. Radio Disney star, Jer-Z,
hand-picked Meghan to be one of her back-up dancers. In
2004, she was cast as Frenchy in a production of Grease in
Dallas. Meghan also got to perform in New York with
Break the Floor Productions and was chosen to perform in
the entry into the Fringe Festival. Upon moving to Austin,
she began performing with Ballet East Dance Company
and working for their outreach program. She has been a guest performer in the But-
ler Community School’s performances of Holiday Road and Broadway in May, and was
cast to dance in the production of Imagine Christmas at Gateway Community Church
in Austin. In 2011, Meghan choreographed for and performed in the movie Rebellious
Children of the Unconscious. Meghan has taught master classes from Toronto, Can-
ada to Laredo, TX, and currently she owns and operates her own professional dance
company and dance studio, TRU dance Project. Just last year, Meghan produced and
directed two of her own shows, A Walk in My Shoes and Imperfect Sentiments, both
performances opened in 2013 at The Off-Center in East Austin. Meghan is also cur-
rently a choreographer for the Austin Round-Up’s annual fundraiser, Drag-o-ween.
She is currently choreographing a musical for Austin Theatre Project named
“Company” and has two pieces going into The Dance Project’s Multi-Company Show,
“Reveal Yourself”.
MEET OUR SPRING EVENT
GUEST ARTIST
The Dance Gallery, located in Round Rock Texas, is home to an award-winning dance troupe made up of dancers ages 9-
18. These dancers will be sharing their talent and love of dance to raise money for a wonderful local cause - MJ's Army,
raising awareness for ALS. The Dance Gallery's performing troupe will be presenting "The Magic Time Machine" a collec-
tion of dances inspired by time travel that sparks the desire to make the most of one's TIME here on earth. Performances
will take place on March 29th at 2pm and 5pmat The Georgetown Palace Theater.
What is MJ’s Army?
Michael Jaillet (MJ) is a Round Rock resident who refuses to allow a terminal illness to deter his motivation to serve those
living with the same disease. MJ was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in
June 2011. According to the Centers for Disease Control, ALS is a progressive motor degenerative disease that attacks
the nerve cells that control voluntary movement. There is currently no known cause or cure for ALS. “There’s nothing that
can prepare you for a terminal illness with the probability that you have three years left to live,” Jaillet said. After seeking
additional opinions on his diagnosis, Jaillet noticed little progress had been made in regards to ALS research. Jaillet
founded MJ’s Army, a family-formed foundation based on three goals: raise awareness, raise funds for research and pa-
tient services, and encourage people to volunteer to support other families living with ALS.
