    The ISF Academy receives authorization

    for IBO’s Middle Years Programme

The ISF Academy received its Letter of

Authorization to offer the Middle Years

    Programme (MYP) from the International

    Baccalaureate (IBO) on November 17,

2009. This followed the authorization visit

from the IBO MYP team from November 3 to

    5, 2009. This is a significant achievement

for our entire school community as The ISF

Academy now formally joins the IB

community as an IB World School.

Congratulations go to our parents and

students, our MYP Coordinator and teaching

faculty, and our leadership team, all of whom

have contributed to the development of our

    unique teaching and learning environment.

Our focus now turns to the forthcoming

authorization process for the IB Diploma

    Programme, scheduled for February, 2010.

Speech given by a Grade 9 student, Keith

Mak, at a celebration party to honor

    Professor Charles Kao:

To many people, Professor Charles Kao is the

Father of Fiber Optics and a Nobel Prize

winner. However, to the students of The ISF

Academy, he is also one of the founders of our

    school. The connection between Professor

Kao and The ISF Academy is special.

We, at The Academy, emphasize Eight Virtues

Plus One. These values contributed to

Professor Kao’s success and recognition. As

the third Vice Chancellor of the Chinese

University of Hong Kong, Professor Kao

treated students as friends, colleagues, and

fellow learners. He acted humbly, respectfully,

and politely - all virtues we encourage at The

    Academy.

It is never easy to stand out in a crowd, let

alone in a crowd of top, international,

physicists. However, with his innovation and

research, Professor Kao has indeed stood out.

Professor Kao’s passion for learning and

discovering includes a desire to affect change.

This hunger for change led him to build this

school, a school with students who can inherit

his spirit, and spread it to future generations.

The final awards ceremony for the Nobel

Prizes is being held today, December 10, in

Stockholm, Sweden; thus, we are taking this

opportunity to celebrate our special connection

    and respect for Professor Kao.

Please join me in an ISF clap for our very own,

    Professor Charles K. Kao.

The school is proud to announce the launch of the Professor Charles

Kao Awards for Innovation and Enterprise for Primary and Secondary

students. Professor Charles Kao is the Founding Chairman of The

Independent Schools Foundation and led The ISF Academy‘s

application to the government for a new model of education in Hong

Kong. His philosophy of education, encapsulated in his motto

―Learning! Learning! Learning!‖, shaped the vision and philosophy of

education at our school, encouraging our students to explore, question

and engage in multiple modes of learning. He is celebrated for his

research work, his commitment to lifelong learning, and his emphasis

on original and independent thinking. His unselfish decision to give up

possession of the patent for fiber optic technology led to a far-reaching

impact in the world of global communications.

The recipient of the Professor Charles Kao Award for Innovation

and Enterprise must demonstrate endeavor that shows innovation and

creativity. The recipient must also be community minded, non-

materialistic, have a respect for education, be an independent thinker, a

humanitarian, and exhibit commitment to advancement in a chosen

    area.

The objectives of the award are to recognize student initiative and

potential; encourage, promote, and facilitate the development of new

ideas and innovation; and to provide students with the opportunity to

    broaden their learning experience.

On Saturday, November 21, 2009, The ISF Academy organized its secondannual fundraising event, the X Jam, in support of the Aspire Campaign. The

Aspire Campaign was launched last year with a goal of raising HK$300 millionfrom 2008 through to 2014. Funds raised will be used to support three

    initiatives:

    Advancing Innovation: buildings and new facilities;

Advancing Excellence: student and professional development programs; and

Advancing Opportunity: scholarships and financial aid.

The event was truly remarkable and a huge success raising approximately

HK$2.8 million. On the day, the school featured a host of X citing, fun and

challenging activities, arts and crafts, games, and performances. All of these

activities were carefully chosen to engender the values of the X games: with

the core values of our school – Determination, Perseverance, Courage,

Passion and Safety, these are qualities that are aligned the core values in

sport play a very important role at The Academy as we prepare our students

for the 21st century. A healthy exposure to sports enables our children to learn

to set goals and test their limits, further building characteristics of strength and

stamina that equip them to excel in all facets of life.

Present on the day were Governors, teachers, staff, parents and friends. The

success of the event was due to the tremendous hard work and efforts of our

dedicated X Jam Committee members as well as so many of our parents

volunteers who helped bring all this together over the last 11 months and on

the days leading up to the X Jam. We could not have done this without their

help and we are truly grateful and appreciative of this wonderful demonstration

of The ISF Academy‘s community at its best.

The highlight of the day was almost certainly the demonstration of skills by the

Federation of Extreme Sports and the favorite activities for so many of our

students were undoubtedly the giant slides and bungee trampoline.

The ISF Academy Quiz Show for primary students wassuccessfully held in October. The participants learnt about

the importance of team work, especially in the tasks that

required them to work together. This was definitely an

excellent opportunity to build up class and school spirit.

Students were enthusiastic about the quiz and listened

eagerly to the questions as they cheered their classmates

on. Everyone found it to be most exciting and enjoyable.

In line with our school‘s mission and vision, questions were

given in either Putonghua or English. Topics covered

include: Chinese, current affairs, English, Mathematics,

Science, History and Geography. The questions in the

audience participation round also greatly contributed to the

    atmosphere.

The school thanks all our parent volunteers who worked

tirelessly on putting this together. We especially thank our

The Clifford C.F. Wong Libraries hosted a verysuccessful book fair in the ISF Circle from

December 2 to 4, 2009. Six vendors, including

The Stanford House, Hong Kong Book Centre,

Naxos Audio Books, Reader‘s Bookstore, Chung

Hwa Company Ltd. and Innovation Publishing

Limited, joined the book fair and provided a wide

range of books, audio materials, and software. It

was a great pleasure to see our students,

teachers and parents enjoying their visits to the

book fair and getting the chance to purchase their

favorite books in the school! Our dedicated parent

volunteers helped students to write their wish lists

if they forgot to bring money to buy books or if

they needed more money for more books! There

were many return customers for the book fair! In

addition, some parents wanted to donate the titles

teachers put down on the teachers‘ wish lists for

the classroom libraries. With the help and support

from the PTA, students, teachers, staff, parents

and vendors, the book fair was well received by

    Grade 6 to 10 Camps

It is an annual rite of passage for ISF Academy

students to attend outdoor education camps in

October. The camps promote a sense of community

and enable the students to bond with each other at

the beginning of the academic year. In 2009, the

students were also able to participate in learning

connected to community and service. The outdoor

rigor of camp life, combined with the added elements

of community and service, made the trips memorable

for all students. The team from Dragonfly helped us

to create fantastic camps for each grade level during

the week of October 5, 2009:

Here is what Vivien To, a Grade 6

student, had to say about her

    camp experience this year.

On October 7, 2009, Grade 6 went to

a camp in Hoi Ha. We were very

excited because we were able to

kayak and snorkel. We also played

water and team building games that

helped us to think about ourselves in

different ways. Fun too was a

    mangrove study, which helped us

learn about the plants and living

things around the area. We also

cooked our own meals. By doing

this, and by washing our own dishes,

we learned that we have to be

    independent and do things ourselves.

On the last night we had a barbecue

    dinner, including smores made from

    crackers, marshmallows, and

    chocolate. Even though, at the

beginning of the trip, we thought

camp might be bad, it was a really

fun time. Thank you, Dragonfly, for

treating us so nicely and for making

    camp fun!”

    3. PTA Chinese Books Order

In late November this year, the PTA organized the first

ever Chinese Book Order for Primary students. A good

number of parents supported the initiative by

recommending their favorite children‘s books, allowing

us to compile a list of over 200 excellent titles for

children from Foundation Year to Grade 5. At the end,

over 100 parents put in orders for more than 2,000

books from the recommended list. We hope the

exercise will help parents identify high-quality Chinese

books for their children and further enhance the reading

habits of students at The ISF Academy.

    Knowing Your Child through Enneagram

To facilitate communication between parents and their children, the Counseling Team organized a parent workshop titled ―Knowing

Your Child through Enneagram‖, which was held on Thursday, November 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Clifford C.F. Wong

Secondary Library. Mr. Jacob Yu from Spiritual Stepping-Stone was invited to be the speaker. Mr. Yu, who holds a Master Degree in

counseling and a Bachelor Degree of Social Work, has fifteen years of experience in training and counseling. A passionate and

eloquent speaker, he delivered the speech with invaluable advice and a great sense of humor. Parents enjoyed the two-hour seminar

at which he comprehensively introduced the nine personality types, giving lively examples each time, and stayed behind for a lengthy

    Q & A session.

Through knowing the personality of the children, parents developed greater insight on how to get along with their children. The lecture

was conducted in Cantonese with simultaneous Putonghua translation. It was wonderful to see over 50 parents attending the

workshop and see them being fully engaged. They raised interesting questions and certainly enriched our learning. Parents were

satisfied with the workshop and found it helpful in building their parenting skills. We look forward to having Mr. Yu come back again.

The Counseling Team will continue to organize different activities to provide better support for our enthusiastic parents.

    5. Speaker series

Jointly organized by the PTA and the school counseling

team, the second event of the speaker series invited Dr.

Iris Chau to give a seminar on ―How to Develop Your

Child‘s Character‖ on Thursday, December 3 at The

Clifford C.F. Wong Secondary Library. Dr. Chau is a highly

sought after speaker, author, psychologist, and counselor

renowned for her work in play therapy. The seminar was

conducted in Cantonese with English translation provided

by a member of our school counseling team.

She discussed how parents can positively guide their

children towards becoming well-balanced individuals with a

strong sense of self-esteem. Parents were given practical

tips on how to handle their children in difficult situations

and how to work with children with attitude problems. The

Q&A session lasted way past the finishing hour as parents

had endless questions about their children. Over 70

parents attended the talk and we hope that we will have the

opportunity to hear from Dr. Iris Chau again in the near

    future.
