NICOLAS RUELMONTRÉAL | PROJET 8 SECONDES
Montréal. 8 secondes

8 secondes
Galerie de Bellefeuille is proud to be part of this year’s Les Amis de la montagne fundraising campaign. The gallery’s contri-bution is a selection of photographs from Nicolas Ruel’s sweeping 8 secondes project, which has been underway for eight years. Montréal. 8 secondes is the final stop on an epic photographic voyage encompassing 65 ports of call—from Abu Dhabi to Venice.
Photographing one’s own city is a challenge. A comfortable and familiar relationship with space can easily become a trap. The sharp edge of vision is, inevitably, ground down and dulled through everyday use on the same-old sameness. As a hard-core cyclist, Nicolas Ruel is all-too-well acquainted with the contours of the mountain. To break free of his old way of seeing, he started off the project’s Montreal leg by going for a walk with Jean-Michel Villanove, Les Amis de la montagne’s coordinator of educational services for the general public. He then delved into the organization’s archives, gaining new insight into the history of this visual and natural landmark, a focal point of city life since the Montreal’s birth. The park on the mountain—designed by Central Park
co-creator Frederick L. Olmsted—is much-prized space where Montrealers meet, learn, and play.
Ruel’s works about Montreal incorporate both the relationship Montrealers have with the mountain and the dynamic created by this imposing natural feature lodged in the urban fabric. “Mount Royal makes our city unique,” explains Ruel. “I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else. Visitors to Montreal don’t pay that much attention to the city’s architecture—what they come away with is a powerful image of the people who live here, the way they occupy space.”
Ruel is no chaser of images. You don’t see him wandering around with a camera around his neck waiting for that moment when the ordinary crosses paths with random chance. Ruel chooses. He sets up his tripod in the exact spot where, for an eight-second expos-ure on film, humanity, nature, and concrete are fixed into an image that captivates. The result points to one place and to another place, to one moment and the instant that follows it. Ruel’s cityscapes create contrasts between neighbouring elements, playing up
our city’s multi-faceted personality—some-times cheerful, sometimes formless. His photographs gather up time transparently, like lost spectres conjured from the past to haunt us.
Ruel prints his compositions on stainless-steel sheets, whose iridescence emphasizes the depths of layered perspectives contained in the image. Meaning becomes richer. On its immutable backing, the image gathers together successive temporalities that speak to us of time’s passage. It’s a process that deliberately hearkens back to the daguerre-otype—thus evoking the historic roots of photography—though it in fact demands the very latest in cutting-edge print technology. But whatever angle we come to his work from, Ruel is always playing with, playing on, playing for, playing off, and playing up time.

PROJET 8 SECONDES
8 SECONDES PROJECT
The 8 secondes project marshals the founding principles of an artistic process based on a double exposure technique, where a sudden swivelling motion triggers the transfiguration of the visible. The photographer travels in quest of familiar images in order to expose their hidden architecture: his sculp-tural compositions, crystallised in monumental stain-less steel prints, seem to give access to the hidden dimensions of space and time.
This approach of urban subjects induces an unprecedented reflection on human progress through our contemporary civilization, and revital-izes the traces of a humanity that never ceases to surprise us with its ingenious creations. Car-ried out over a period of 8 years, this project spot-lights architectural material that exposes its true singularity and richness through a body of work selected from 65 cities and 40 countries across all continents.
BIOGRAPHIE
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) in 1973, Nicolas Ruel studied photography and international relations before being trained in scriptwriting at Université du Québec à Montréal. His first pub-lished works were photographic essays in black and white on the Moscow Metro (2000) and Angkor Wat (2002). In parallel, he developed various series where he explored, with great structural acumen, the figures of architecture, light or industry. His work garnered the attention of important figures of the living arts: the choregraphers Marie Chouinard or Édouard Lock, theatre director Robert Lepage or Cirque du Soleil, who all called upon his collabora-tion to capture their theatrical gestures.
From 2007, he initiates the 8 secondes project that would become the cornerstone of a major photo-graphic series until 2015. Nicolas Ruel’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions and contemporary art fairs in Canada, Europe, and the United States. His photographs are part of numerous public and private collections. He has won eight LUX grand prizes over the course of his career and three monographs of his work has been published: Inox (2007), Elements (2007) and Carnaval (2010).
