Tutoring Experience

July 2015 - Residential Tutor The Hamptons, London

Over the summer holidays I lived with an American family tutoring three brothers (now 13, 11, and 9). The main focus was to prepare the oldest boy across all subjects for the 2016 Common Entrance. A particular weakness was Latin, which he scored well under 50% in the summer mocks. The most recent result was above 90%. With the middle brother, I focused on verbal non-verbal reasoning skills with the pre-tests in mind, and this was also the focus with the youngest brother. I continue to tutor the boys. October - November 2014 Temporary Governor Monaco

I lived with a Russian family in Monaco for one month, taking care of two boys, aged 8 and 5. My responsibilities were overseeing their education in school, providing extra lessons at home, and teaching good manners and etiquette, as well as supervising their evening routine. The latter ranged from eating properly at the table to politeness. I taught the boys English, creating very personal learning programmes for each of them. As well as this, I also taught very basic words to their sister, aged 2.

August 2014 - General English Tutor London

I tutor clients with ranging abilities, both children and adults, in General English. I focus on the client’s needs, particularly with functional language and pronunciation. These are active and engaging sessions, as developing language skills can often seem daunting. I have tutored at the following levels: Beginner: 15 hours. I have had a range of clients, and many had just moved to London and needed intensive tutoring.Intermediate level: 10 hours. My focus with these clients was to increase confidence in using language. (Feedback below)Upper-Intermediate: 10 hours. At this level, I introduced more complex structures and language, encouraging clients to continue to develop their skill.Advanced level: 10 hours. With these clients I used a discussion based approach, and I prompted the use of high level language and grammatical structures.

4th August - 15th August 2014 Temporary General English Teacher

International House London,

International House employed me immediately after I completed my CELTA qualification to assist them during their busiest time of year. I taught General English to a class of Low-Intermediate learners with an age range of 18-50, with the majority of learners at the lower end of the range. Teaching so soon after the CELTA allowed me to consolidate the skills I developed on the course. I taught for a total of 30 hours.

April - May 2014 English Literature Tutor (Pre-U) Leicester

In the pre-exam period, I tutored a client who was preparing for her Pre-U exam. We covered a range of texts, including Frankenstein, Measure for Measure, and the poetry of Keats. I was recently emailed by her with the good news that she achieved an M1, two grades higher than her prediction. I did this while preparing for my own A-Levels. (Feedback below)

2013 - Test preparation London

I have prepared several boys for tests for different public schools. This involved focusing on areas most in need of development so as to have greater consistency across their academic profiles. For example, one boy preparing for Eton struggled with his approach to verbal reasoning, so this was targeted and we found a way in which he could more easily understand the questions, and how to answer them. This was an intensive preparation assignment, lasting two weeks, so it was important to make sure that the sessions were engaging.Another boy trying for entry to Harrow struggled with consistency, so we focussed on building that. The preparation happened over 2 months, so he was able to improve significantly. In some cases, I followed up with interview preparation.

September 2013 - June 2014 Mathematics Tutor (GCSE) Eton, London

Whilst at Eton I tutored a boy throughout the school year (approximately 3 times a week for 9 months) in preparation for his exam. We covered material taught in lessons and went through homework together. Closer to the exam, we focussed on past paper questions, specifically the types of question asked.

1st July - 1st September 2013 Residential Tutor and Manny Portofino, London, Bali

I worked exclusively with one family which had a very young daughter over the summer. My duties entailed tutoring in general subjects, but with a focus on introducing and developing English Language as well as etiquette. My other role was as a nanny, which involved some cooking, and entertaining the child. This varied from daytime play to looking after her during family holidays. The frequent travel meant that I had to be able to care for the child in changing environment. (Feedback below)

Interests

Over the last few years I have become interested in the directorial side of theatre. Having been the Assistant Director of Sheridan’s The Critic, directed by Joanne Pearce-Noble at Blenheim Palace, I became involved in her production of Virgil’s Aeneid: The Journey, again as one of the Assistant Directors. When I started at Eton College, I quickly became involved in theatre there, Co-Directing a production of Ionesco’s Exit the King, and directing the, Osama the Hero. These experiences have allowed me to direct groups of people efficiently, while motivating them to deliver their best performance. I continue to be involved in theatre at university.

I am a keen rower, and whilst at school I trained intensively throughout the week with Eton College Boat Club. I find that this is both enjoyable and good for fitness, as well as allowing me to meet new people when attending races. Joining the boat club also allowed me to build relationships and integrate quickly with a new peer group. I am able to interact with people well and to quickly feel at ease, and make others feel equally at ease, in new environments. Rowing with such commitment has meant that I have organised myself well so as to be able to train and complete schoolwork on time. I have become punctual and good at structuring my day.

Through scuba diving I learned to learn to work well in a team as the buddy system in diving means that you must be aware of what is going on to ensure the safety of all. I find that I work well in groups, being able to lead confidently as well as to take instruction from others.

Feedback

Client: 3 boys needing both general tuition and test preparationFeedback from parent: It was an absolute pleasure to have Niko with us. Niko has become part of the family. Niko’s tutoring skills are beyond impressive and the bond he has made with all three boys is precious. We feel very lucky to have Niko on a personal level and a professional level. Thank you very much for sorting us out with our three boys.

Client: 5 ½ year old Italian needing to improve English and Maths, as well as general care.Feedback from parent: Nikola is sporty and his enthusiasm transmitted well when engaging in ball games and the tennis / karate exercises she needed to work on. Nikola is flexible and knows how to engage young children in a lively and positive way. Importantly two points stand out: firstly I felt that I could take Nikola into any social situation required and he was comfortable while at the same time carrying out his duties and secondly Nikola was conscientious about his work - unusual to find.

Client: 18-year-old preparing for English Pre-UFeedback: Nikola was a valuable addition to my preparation for my English exam. His help in the run-up to the exam was undeniably useful, and remembering his tips got me through the exam on the day without panicking, something I had struggled with in the past.

Client: Italian lawyer wishing to improve her communicative skillsFeedback: I find your lessons really useful. I have never had a teacher who focuses on pronunciation like you do. It’s really helpful for me because I know the words but people didn’t understand what I was saying! I can now speak more confidently, and I enjoy using the language we learned after class.
