Neuro-Linguistic Psychotherapy
Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy (NLPt) is an experiential constructivist approach that
helps people explore and change patterns in their life. NLPt helps people address
experiences that by have been subject to deletion ignoring some experiences or
details from them, distortion creating connections and meaning from and between
experiences that may not have been meant and that may or may not be helpful and
generalisation creating universal rules from experiences.
NLPthas four key elements:
UNDERPINNING THEORIES
The European Association for Neuro-Linguistic Psychotherapy identifies six key theories
that underpin the development and practice of NLP and NLPt:
The cybernetics of the Theory of the Mind by Gregory Bateson, including levelsof learning and change.
Social Learning Theory from Albert Bandura including the modelling approach, improved in practice by Richard Bandler and John Grinder.
Transformational Grammar from Noam Chomsky and the General Semanticsapproach of Alfred Korzybski, which served as a basis and influenced the linguistic
models developed by Bandler and Grinder.
The assumption of a fundamental orientation of human action towardsgoals in the TOTE Model from Pribram, Galanter and Miller
The writings of William James emphasising sensory representation systems asbasic elements of information processing and of subjective experience.
The assumption of the existence offunctional and independent parts of one'sidentity encompassing conscious and unconscious process elements, resulting
from modelling the works of Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton H. Erickson.
