Idea of writing a novel
Jose Rizal, a Filipino nationalist and medical
doctor, conceived the idea of writing a
novel that would expose the ills of
Philippine society after reading Harriet
Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hepreferred that the prospective novel
express the way Filipino culture was
backward, anti-progress, anti-intellectual,and not conducive to the ideas of the Age
of Enlightenment.

Reason why the project did not materialize:
Initially, the novel was planned to coverand describe all phases of Filipino life, but
almost everybody wanted to write about
women. Rizal even saw his companionsspend more time gambling and flirting with
Spanish women. Because of this, he
pulled out of the plan of co-writing with
others and decided to draft the novel
alone.

Intellectual Legacies of Rizal relevant in our
daily life:On a fathers useful advice to a son
You are a man now and you must think about your
future and about your duties. You must learn the scienceof life (how to live with other people) and if you remain in
my shadow (always becoming dependent on ones
parents) you will not learn to look far ahead you must
learn of others and greater things.. Sacrifice (give uploving a girlfriend for continuing ones studies) for the
future. (Crisostomo Ibarra)

Evils does not correct another (Ibarra to Guevarra) Evils are not remedied by other evils, and in
our misfortunes each of us has his share of
blame (Elias to Ibarra)
On human rights
Above the ridiculous authority of the
governadorcillo are the rights of the people (Tasio
to Don Filipo)

Gold is the most powerful (Tasio to Ibarra)

on to study just as any confidence leads to
notable achievement(School teacher to Ibarra)

Each one thinks only of himself, no one thinks
of the rest, and therefore we are all weak(DonFilipo to the Governadorcillo)

On the attitude of the rich
The rich only think of increasing their wealth, pride and show blind them, and as they aregenerally safe, above all when they havepowerful friends, none of them troubles about
the woes of the unfortunate(Tasio to Elias)On judging our fellowmen
Yes to do good, but not to do ill, to correct and
to better, but not to destroy, for if his judgmentsare wrong he has not the power to remedy theevil he has done (Elias to Ibarra)

On men of conviction
I like men of conviction (Fr. Fernandez to Isagani)On the death of society
What are physical sufferings compared to moral
tortures? What is the death of the man in thepresence of the death of the society (Simon toBasilio)

On national progress
Study how other nation prosper and then do as
they do(Simoun to several companions)On the lack of personal involvement of the
people
I can admit that the government does not knowthe people, but I believe that the people knowthe government even less. There are uselessofficials, bad ones, if you wish but there are alsogood ones, and if these are unable to doanything, it is because they meet with an inertmass, the people who take little part in theaffairs that concern them(Ibarra to Tasio)

On positive leadership
the greatness of a man is not in living before histime, a thing almost impossible, but inunderstanding its desires in responding to itsneeds, and in guiding it on its forward way(Simoun to Basilio)
On the right of the people to protestWhen a people is denied light, home, liberty,
justice.. Things that are essential to life andtherefore mans patrimony that people has the
right to treat him who despoils it as we would therobber who intercepts on the highway (the highgovernment official to the Governor-General)
