His story was featured about three years ago on a weekly basis in North County Leader for over a year and captured the hearts of people in the North County. Baby Jack, as he was known then, has happily become Master Jack, as he started school for the first time recently. This wonderful milestone in Jack’s life was achieved when he attended Our Lady, Queen of Ireland school in Toberburr, Rivermeade. His aunt, Samantha Daly told the County Leader, “We never thought we would see this day. He was due to start school on September 1st, but he was back in Crumlin Hospital and he could not start until 16th September, but he is now doing really well. Jack still attends Crumlin on a weekly basis for blood tests, and is also flying back to Great Ormond Street hospital in London for check ups,” said Samantha. Jack was born with a heart disease known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely under- developed. The brave little trooper had undergone two open heart surgeries in the early months of his life and there was real concern over his chances of surviving this disease. He spent the first two years of his life in Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin as he awaited a heart trans- plant. Around this time, the County Leader decided to highlight the plight of the plucky baby and the result was that fundraisers were organised in every corner of the North County and beyond. He was also featured on radio and TV shows, which further height- ened awareness of his condition. The events ranged from quiz nights to head shaves and body hair waxing among others. He spent his second birthday and Christmas in hospital and among his visitors were Hollywood star, Colin Farrell and also Ronan Keating. The end result was that baby Jack was able to have a heart transplant in Great Ormond Street hospital in London in April 2008. The people of the North County really took Jack to their hearts and were terrific in their response to his plight, which, thankfully has had such a happy outcome as him being able to attend school for the first time. Samantha said that Jack, who will be five in December has adjusted really well in school. “The teachers are delighted with his progress. He was very excited about starting school, as he can see the school from his house and wanted to start with the other kids,” she said. He has to attend Great Ormond Street hospital on October 20th for two nights. At a time when we are bombarded by depressing news, it is indeed a delight to be in a position to report on such a joyous occasion. Thomas Ashe ExhibitionTouched Many Hearts In Lusk

The story of ThomasAshe’s life and death wastold in the LuskCommunity CouncilThomas Ashe Life andTimes Exhibition in theSaint Macullin’s Centrewhich ended on Saturday26th September last.Special visitors to the exhi-bition on 25th September2010 included two descen-dants of the Ashe family,Prof. Joseph Walshe ofDublin and Patricia Healywho travelled from Sligo to

visit the exhibition. The exhibition touched thehearts of many familiesfrom Lusk and surroundingareas who connected withthe historic changes thatLusk and Ireland under-went at the turn of thecentury. The small villageof Corduff was gaining anew national school andteacher, Thomas Ashe. The young Ashe was tobecome a dynamic forcein the community, in theGAA, setting up Black

Malahide AnnualCoffee Morning

Celebrates 10 YearsSt. Francis Hospice recently hostedIreland’s biggest Coffee Morning, bringing volunteers from many partsof the North County together to raisemuch needed funds for the hospice.Among the volunteers were localMalahide ladies, Mary Shannon andEileen Rush. The event was held inMary’s house and she managed tosqueeze 50 people into her home toaid this great cause. This is the tenthyear Mary and the girls have run the

coffee morning for the hospice andthey were delighted to be celebrating10 years. Mary told the CountyLeader, “It’s €2 for a coffee, but Iplace a jar on the counter so peoplecan give what they want. The Hospiceis a much valued institution in Dublinand I doubt if there is anyone whodoes not know of a family, friend, neighbour or work colleague who hasnot availed of the services providedby the staff there. It was great toreach 10 years and it was a doublecelebration for us. The neighbours arereally helpful and provided extra cupsand kettles and helping out ingeneral.”

Skerries Residents CanBecome Energy-Smart!

Skerries residents will be given the opportunity to become‘energy-smart’ by attending a free Home Energy SavingInformation evening on Thursday, 7th October in the LittleTheatre (beside Skerries Community Centre) at 7:30pm.The information evening is being organised by Codemawith the support of Sustainable Skerries. Codema is anot-for-profit sustainable energy agency which acts asenergy adviser to the four local authorities in Dublin and iscompletely independent of all contractors. Therefore, itsonly interest is in looking out for the local community.Residents will be given an insight into the current energystandards of Dublin homes and they will also receiveexpert, independent advice on saving energy around thehome. Homeowners who are interested in improvingtheir homes’ energy performance will also learn about thebenefits of joining an Energy Smart Community andgetting work carried out as a cluster. The Energy SmartCommunity is a scheme which allows homeowners to jointogether to improve the energy-efficiency of their homes ata lower price than going it alone. It works on the simpleprinciple that by bringing homeowners together in acluster, they can save on the cost and hassle of carrying outenergy-efficiency improvements through a group tenderprocess.

Portrane LadyLeft Isolated ByCouncil DecisionA truly bizarre case of ‘Political CorrectnessGone Mad’ has afflicted the council officials and

elected members recently. The council in theirperceived ‘wisdom’ have decidedto isolate a Portrane resident bychanging her address.Mary Brennan of NetherCross, Burrow Road hashad her address changedto Valley Lane. Maryand her son, Darren arethe only residents herefor the last 36 years.Valleys wouldnormally suggest thenearby presence ofmountains, butunless there hasbeen very recentglacial activity on thepeninsula, mountainsare in short supplyhere. Perhaps thecouncil were influ-enced by the nearbymounds created by Ballealy landfi l l atRogerstown, which is clearly visible from thearea. Mary told the County Leader, “It was calledBrennan’s Lane years ago, although the officialname was Nether Cross since 1870. I told thecouncil that I love the name of my address and Ican’t see why people who don’t live here have theright to change the name, especially when itsagainst my expressed wishes,” a furious Marysaid. The whole affair has caused her nothing butanxiety and grief, but she intends to get thecouncil to reverse this daft decision. She has tried

in vain to contact them about changing theirminds without success up to now. The CountyLeader contacted local Labour Party councillor,Gerry McGuire who said, “The namingcommittee carried out a survey last May tochange the name and everyone agreed, exceptMary. Incidentally she is not the only resident ofNether Cross, as other people live further downthe lane.” He continued, “The reason for thechange of address is to facilitate the emergencyservices and to put proper signage on thelaneways. In the event of an emergency, theservices would not know where to go. The nameValley Lane appears on Ordnance Survey mapsand historians are adamant that this name was

previously used. Burrow Road is full of lanewaysand some are called after people who lived onthem and they don’t appear on any maps. Onlythe locals know them,” he said. It seems that thecouncil are not for turning on this decision. Itwould appear that leaving the name ‘NetherCross’ and providing adequate signage at theentrance to all of the laneways would have solvedthis problem very quickly. Surely the councilhave more pressing issues to be getting alongwith, instead of causing unnecessary hardship toMary Brennan.

East West Interconnector The East West Interconnector utilises a Direct Current (DC) system that produces a static magnetic field. The most common static magnetic field is the one produced by the earth itself (typically 49µT in Ireland) which has been around since the beginning of time.

The following table shows the magnetic field from some everyday sources:

Microtesla (µT) is the unit used to measure magnetic fields.

We hope this helps you understand that there are no health concerns in relation to everyday contact with static magnetic fields and reassures you that the East West Interconnector is completely safe.

Dispute Over Opening UpOf Balbriggan Laneway

Two neighbouringBalbriggan estates are atloggerheads over the

reopening of a lanewaybetween the two, justover two weeks ago. Originally there was a

fence erected here by thedeveloper, but 18months ago, residents ofHampton Woodsdecided to erect a wallas a safety precautionagainst their childrenaccessing a busy roadvia the laneway. It isnow a magnet for anti-social behaviour.Residents in HamptonWood were notinformed that the wallwas being demolishedafter lobbying by theirneighbours in BremoreCastle to open up thelane. Residents, Liamand Emer Peel who liveadjacent to the lanewaytold the County Leaderthat since the wall wasdemolished they cannotrelax in their own home.“Late at night, youthscongregate in thelaneway leaving debrissuch as bottles and cans. They are there until allhours of the night.” TheHampton WoodsResidents Associationwant the council toengage with them on anissue which is causingsleepless nights formany members whohave young childrenwho are particularlyvulnerable to possible

traffic accidents, as thereis currently just a gapinghole where a wall usedto be. Bremore Castleresident, Victor Dunne, who has lobbied for theopening up of thelaneway told the CountyLeader “We wanted itopened up to make aquicker, more efficientjourney to access thetown, it saves fiveminutes off a fifteenminute journey. I wouldlike to see the council

come along and finishthe lane, maybe puttinga barrier up on theHampton Wood side toease their concerns. Ihave also been lobbyingthe council for severalyears to put trafficcalming measures ontothe road at the lane’sexit.” When contactedby the County Leader, the local authority issueda statement promisingtraffic calming measures

would be on the agenda.A spokesperson said, “Ican confirm that a fullyaccessible pedestrianlink was providedbetween Bremore Castleand Hampton Woods bythe developer under theterms of the planningpermission for the twoestates. The purpose ofthe link is to provideease of access to resi-dents and schoolgoingchildren living in thearea. This was subse-

quent ly b locked bypersons unknown to thecouncil , as i t contra-vened the conditions ofthe planning permis-sion.” Meanwhile, local FineGael councillor, TomO’Leary to ld theCounty Leader, “I havemet the res idents ofHampton Woods andinspected the lanewaythere which leads outonto the Bremore

es ta te . I am veryconcerned wi th theHeal th and Safe tyaspect of the design ofthis access, and I amconcerned that the rele-vant planner or engi-neer could sign off onthis access as a safepoint of access, particu-

lar i ly for smal l orteenage children. Thereshould be some sort ofbarrier preventing chil-dren f rom goingdirect ly out onto theroadway.” Hecontinued, “I suggest ameet ing should bearranged with represen-

titives of both residentsassociations to see if asolution can be found. There i s somethingradical ly wrong withthe p lanning regula-t ions that resul ts inresidents under siege intheir own homes,” heconcluded.

8.30 a.m. The early morning head office wasa hive of activity, but there was also a senseof decorum in this busy North City work-place, a mindfulness among the staff thatjust down the corridor in the differentchapels of rest, recently deceased people arelaid out for their final repose, that deeplysymbolic age-old pause between one worldand the next.Jonathan takes a call concerning Stafford’snew Portmarnock Funeral Home – it’s due toopen on the 1st October; he is meeting keypeople out there later in the morning and I’llbe tagging along. As we moved through the organisation,Jonathan introduced me to staff membersand if you didn’t know better, you might wellbe learning how a successful Accountancyfirm goes about its day. But then it all got abit different. We were chatting with Chris, the Operations Manager of Stafford’s, whenan urgent call came through to him from aEuropean Embassy concerning the repatria-tion of an Irish citizen who had suffered amassive heart attack on holiday and hadpassed away. It was chilling to think of it.Holidays are synonymous with lightness andjoy and anticipation. Bereavement anddeath are not supposed to be a part of thepackage deal. And then you remember thatdeath has no boundaries and is not mindfulof home or nationality. And so of coursepeople die on vacation. As we left Chris andthe diplomat to the important business ofhaving this Irishman’s remains brought backto his native homeland, Jonathan elaboratedon that specialised aspect of their service.‘We deal with an unbelievable amount of redtape in the effort to have a deceased Irishperson brought home. It’s very difficult forthe families, entangled in yards of bureau-cratic demands along with the shock andintensity. And that’s before you even begin toget your head around the language barrier.’I agree with him that life really can changein the flip of a moment, a family basking inthe heat of a well earned holiday one minuteand then so suddenly thrown into chaos andconfusion and pain. ‘It must be a relief forthe relatives to let you guys deal with thenightmare of documentation’. ‘It is,’ agreedJonathan. ‘Can be highly stressful at first. Then there’s the emotional task of actuallytelling us down the line that their belovedrelative has passed away. But once theyknow that we can take immediate action ontheir behalf, you can hear the relief in theirvoices.’9.00 a.m. You can feel things ratchet up anotch. Funeral time is fast approaching andI take a step back to observe, and leaveJonathan direct his attention to the demandsof a busy morning. There’s a lot happening.Phones are ringing loudly but answered byvarious staff with quiet reassuring efficiency.Jonathan Stafford is right up to the minuteon every single aspect of all the currentfunerals taking place. He seems to have anuncanny ability to move fluidly betweendifferent demands, yet give his undividedattention to the smallest detail. As a result,

families are constantly reassured that theirdeeply emotional funeral farewell is giventhe highest priority. No issue or specialrequest is too small. Flower tributes arearriving from Stafford’s dedicated floralservice, spilling out around the receptiondesk in glorious abundance, and there’s apoignancy to it all, a reminder of the good-ness of friends remembering to call theflorist, offering a touch of colour to lightenthe dark days of the bereaved family. Jonathan continues to move with quiet

assurance through a day filled with whatseemed to me to be a multitude of chal-lenges. The most pressing issue right now isthe fact that he basically needs to attendone Funeral in Howth at 10 o’clock and getto Malahide in time for another FuneralMass at 11. ‘It’s not so much a question oflogistics’, says Jonathan. ‘I don’t mean thatI have to drive the hearse and suddenlyabandon one family while high-tailingacross the city to the next. Everything isalready in place for both funerals, and theneccessary men assigned to each service. But I find that I’m involved in every funeralthat we arrange to some degree, and thatoften entails attending more than onefuneral or removal on any given day. Thegift of bi-location would be nice.’ With over 20 years experience in theFuneral business, the young ManagingDirector is also current President of theIAFD, (Irish Association of Funeral

Directors), and has been highly instru-mental in raising the professional standardsof his profession, through education policy, ethical standards charters and much more. And yet as I observe Jonathan’s hands-onstyle of management, his involvement withthe families he serves is deeply indicative ofthe core ethos running through Stafford’slong-established family firm. ‘Stafford’s wasalways a very community orientated busi-ness. And that strong core thread is stillwhat we are about. I meet people almostevery day who remember my grandfatherand how he began with one car providingfuneral assistance for local neighbours andfriends in the North Strand area. And myown father, John Stafford developed thefirm over many years. Dad’s whole life hasbeen about service to his community in oneform or other - his deep connections topeople framed his long career in public officeand also made him an outstanding FuneralDirector. Dad was unstintingly generous in

passing on his wisdom but also wise enoughto give me free rein to develop my ownideas. People in North Dublin still love tolink in with him after various funeralservices.’12.00 p.m. There’s time for a quick coffee, and Jonathan is reflecting on the twofunerals. ‘They were both slightly unusualbut for different reasons. The earlier servicehad very few mourners. The deceased manhad come in to see me 4 years ago, asked meto pre-arrange his funeral. A meticulousman, pleasant manner. Had gone to Londonat 15. His family had all passed on. I knew Iwas probably the only person at the servicethis morning that had known him well. ‘That must be awful. Knowing that youreally are alone.’ ‘You would think so, but John, that was hisname, he came to see me a good few timesand I tell you, that man had a huge sense ofpeace and acceptance about him. A real

example of how faith can sustain. And thenI go to Malahide and there’s a huge familygathering and an outpouring of emotion. This was Paul, he was 86, same generationas the other gentleman. And of course that’sa different kind of bereavement, when aperson passes at a ‘good’ age, after a longlife. A different kind of grieving happens. But what really added to the family sadnesswas the fact that Paul had only buried hiswife 5 weeks ago.’ ‘Do you think he died of a broken heart?’ ‘Who knows, says Jonathan. ‘But I can tellyou this – we’ve seen that sequence happena lot over the years. That doesn’t make itany easier for the family – the strangenessof a double blow like that is one huge shockto absorb.’ 12.30 pm: We’re driving to Portmarnock, where Jonathan is meeting an engineerconnected to the newly built Stafford’sFuneral Home in the heart of the coastalsuburb. It’s a beautiful building set rightagainst the backdrop of the PortmarnockEstuary. It’s hard to believe that a 15minute drive from the city centre can bringa body to such a deeply peaceful location.Jonathan tells me what motivated him toopen a state-of-the-art funeral home, espe-cially in recessionary times. ‘Quite simply, the time was right,’ saysJonathan. ‘You could say that in like theslow and seemly pace of a funeral proces-sion, Stafford’s moves forward withmeasured progress. It was around 1980when we opened Maypark on the MalahideRoad to facilitate the suburban expansion.North Strand and Maypark are still pivotalto our service – Portmarnock takes things toa new level in terms of the options nowavailable to the communities we serve inNorth Dublin, including Portmarnock,Baldoyle, Sutton, Howth, Donaghmede,Clontarf, Raheny, Malahide, Kinsealy andbeyond.’His concept makes complete sense when Isee the newly completed building. It’s full ofbrightness and light, a place that might liftthe spirits of families in mourning. Veryspacious with 4,500 square feet in total andfour interchangeable chapels of rest, whichmeans that Stafford’s can cater for all kindsof funeral services, from small intimategatherings to large extended crowds. ‘Funeral patterns in Ireland are changingvery rapidly for the first time in 50 years,’says Jonathan, ‘and Portmarnock has incor-porated all these emerging trends. Dublin’straffic congestion has created a huge needfor extensive car parking facilities. Theconcept behind our new building wasmindful of creating new possibilities forpeople. Take the one-movement FuneralService, where a family would rather nothave a Removal, and don’t go to the Churchuntil the morning of the Funeral Mass. Thiscreates an immediate need for the family – alarger place where they can gather theevening before to spend time with theirdeceased relative or friend. Stafford’s canarrange to have an evening prayer service ifrequired. Look, the nature of our businessmeans that every single day families cometo us in deep states of trauma, right in themidst of maybe the biggest challenge they’llever face. That’s a huge motivation to us toenhance service. A key element of that islaying on as many options as possible.Spaciousness and atmosphere means fami-lies can be together in way that sustainsthem through the trauma.’ ‘Will you caterfor people who require a Humanist, Nonreligious Civil Funeral Service?’‘Of course. The Portmarnock building isvery inclusive and roomy and expansive indesign. Civil ceremonies are just oneelement of the changing funeral patterns;we already arrange them, but Portmarnockliterally opens the field of possibilities interms of choice for all.’ As we finish our interview and drive away,it’s easy to see what he means. Looking outacross the broad tranquil sweep of theEstuary, you can easily imagine anyFuneral Service lifted to a special dimensionby virtue of such peaceful surroundings.

A Day in the Life ofa Funeral DirectorAs research days go, this was high on the human-interest scale – a day

spent in the company of a busy Dublin Funeral Director. Along withmy tape recorder, I packed a layman’s curiosity and maybe just a dash

of trepidation. The trepidation took a back seat when I met JonathanStafford, the affable and courteous MD at the helm of Stafford’s FuneralDirectors, one of Dublin’s longest standing family firms. In his late-thirties,Jonathan is younger than I expected.

New Secondary SchoolFor Lusk Looks Likely

The County Council and the Departmentof Education are very close to completingthe purchase of a site for the firstsecondary school in Lusk. This will bewelcome news for all the parents of chil-dren in Lusk who are having difficultyfinding places in the nearby towns of Rushand Skerries, where the secondary schoolsare full. The site is located behind theexisting Educate Together school off theRing Road in Lusk and beside extensiveplaying fields and the planned new facili-ties for the local Soccer club.

Cllr Tom O’Leary (FG) told the CountyLeader, “This is great news for Lusk. I aminformed that the paperwork is beingprocessed and may take about a month tocomplete. The council will then buy thesite and be reimbursed by the Departmentof Education under the Fingal SchoolsPlan. When the site is purchased, theproject moves to the next phase of designand tender.” Deputy James Reilly and Ihave been lobbying for the secondaryschool for some time and I can assure youthat the deputy leader of Fine Gael willmake Lusk secondary school a priority ifthere is a change of Government and he issitting at the cabinet table as a Minister,”concluded O’Leary

The Biggest Circulation Of Any North County Newspaper 15North County Leader5th October 2010

Monday 27th Sept to Friday 1st Oct

Talk of the shrinking economy quickly turned into talk of new business opportu-

nities, as the largest enterprise week in the capital, the Fingal Enterprise Week,

took place in various parts of the North County last week.

The Fingal County Enterprise Board hosted a series of free seminars, workshops

and mentoring clinics throughout the week, which drew record numbers of small

business owners and managers from Swords, Malahide, Balbriggan, Skerries

and surrounding areas.

Oisin Geoghegan, CEO of Fingal County Enterprise Board told the , “The

success of Fingal Enterprise Week demonstrates the huge need for information,

supports and advice from businesses who are looking to expand and from people

looking to set one up. Through the County Enterprise Boards, more small busi-

nesses can be supported and more jobs can be created locally.”

The week got off to a flying start as 200 guests attended the ‘The Business Panel

Q&A’ at the Europa Academy with John Bowman, Bill Cullen from ‘The

Apprentice’ series, Nicola Byrne from 11890, Pat Delaney from IBEC and the

Economic Advisor to ICTU, Paul Sweeney.

Other highlights of the week included the ‘Finance and Funding’ seminar with

RTE presenter, George Lee, at the Grand Hotel in Malahide on Tuesday

evening. George was joined on stage by Oisin Geoghegan, CEO of Fingal

County Enterprise Board, Tom Fitzpatrick from Chartered Accountants Ireland,

Liz Fleming from the Halo Business Angels Network, Michael Lauhoff from

Bank of Ireland, Gerry O’ Brien from Enterprise Ireland and Mairead O’ Grady

from RBK.

Over 50 one-to-one mentoring sessions were hosted throughout the region on

Tuesday, including the Drinan Enterprise Centre in Swords and the Beat

Enterprise Centre in Balbriggan. The panel of experienced business mentors

were on hand to give free advice, information and encouragement to small busi-

ness owners and those thinking of setting up a business.

Sean Gallagher, one of the stars from the Dragons’ Den series on RTE was the

guest speaker at the ‘Networking 4 Business’ event in the Carlton Hotel on the

Old Airport Road on Thursday evening. Members from four business organisa-

tions participated in the networking sessions, including members of the Fingal

Business Network, Women in Business Network, the Fingal Dublin Chamber

and the D15 Chamber.

The grand finale on Friday, was the Fingal Enterprise Awards at the Europa

Academy in Swords. Suzanne Carroll, founder of Tone at Home, a fitness equip-

ment hire company in Swords, took the overall prize. Suzanne was presented

with the award by the Chairman of the Fingal County Enterprise Board, Joe

Harford. Tone at Home, which has ten employees, was shortlisted alongside

three other impressive businesses: Star Stories (Siobhan Warde from Malahide),

Dog Training Ireland (Tara Choules and Lisa Whelan from Blanchardstown)

and Deliciously Different Cakes (Tony Kane from Santry). Tone at home will

now represent Fingal at the National Enterprise Awards in November.

Congratulating Suzanne and her husband and fellow director, Stuart Holmes,

Oisin Geoghegan from Fingal County Enterprise Board, praised the company,

saying: “Tone at Home has successfully managed to turn their fitness equipment

hire company into an attractive franchise model, with eleven franchise territories

across Ireland already signed up. Plans are underway to roll-out this model to

the UK and the judging panel were particularly impressed with the company’s

dynamic strategy for growth.”

Before the awards ceremony on Friday, the stories of three established entrepre-

neurs from the local area were also showcased, including Ann McGee from Ann

McGee Consulting (2009 Fingal Enterprise Award Winners). Michael Dawson

from The Gift Voucher Shop delivered the keynote address at the ceremony,

with RTE’s Bryan Dobson acting as the Master of Ceremonies.

The Fingal Enterprise Week was supported by The County Council, Bank of

Ireland and Newstalk and Joe Harford, Chairman of Fingal County Enterprise

Board, thanked the sponsors, saying, “The Fingal Enterprise Week was all about

positive action. It was about helping people who wish to start new businesses

and owners, managers seeking new opportunities.”

Fingal EngineeringWell known localcompany, FingalEngineering, is at thecutting edge of tech-nology in the field ofcommercial anddomestic automatedgate systems. Thecompany providesautomated Doors,Gates, TrafficBarriers and shuttersfor a wide range ofcustomers, forcommercial, domesticand agriculturalcustomers. They arebased at Treen Hill inLusk and among theirspecialities arecustom made Automated gates systems, including Swing Gates, Sliding Gates andCantilever systems, as well as TrafficBarriers, RisingBollards and alltypes of Industrialdoors and morerecently, a GSMbased weatherrecording system.Twelve years ago,Fingal Engineeringrealised that therewas a market for aturnkey solution toautomated access toyour home orc o m m e r c i a lpremises. Previous to this, if you needed anautomated system you had to contact a gatemanufacturer, another to supply and fitmotors and an electrician to power thesystem.

Managing director, Des Connolly said, “Wespotted a gap in the market and we soon setabout becoming a one stop shop, thus elimi-

nating the associatedproblems of too manycooks spoiling thebroth, so to speak. Wedo the complete jobfrom start to finish. We manufacture theproduct and theninstall it, including allelectrical works. Noneof the work is sub-contracted. Theadvantage for ourcustomers is thatFingal Engineering

take responsibility for the complete project. We service the entire Leinster region and areable to service all types of automation, regard-less of the manufacturer or installer,” he saidIn 2004, a niche in the market presented itselfthrough the explosion of mobile phone usage.”This led to our successful collaboration withDPS Promatic, an Italian company, whichprovides this new technology facilitating theopening of your automated gate by mobilephone. We customise their units to makethem suitable for the Irish market, resultingin hundreds having been successfullyinstalled in Ireland. This system works oncaller ID, with no charge being made for thecall,” said Des, who is very proud of theprogress being made by the company.“We are also agents for TAU AutomationEquipment. They are also an Italian companywhich provides automation systems for gates, doors and shutters and this year marks the10th anniversary of our very successful part-nership,” said Des. The GSM Intercom systemwhich the company promotes through itsassociation with DPS Promatic is indeed revo-lutionary. This works for barriers, gates anddoors. The County Council are one of ourcustomers for this system,” said Des. Thedifference between this system and otherswhich we encounter in shopping centres, hospitals and other locations, is that the

communication between the intercom and thecontrol centre is done by mobile phone. Forany companies thinking of changing to thissystem, the great advantage is that it does notrequire hard wire or any associated expensive

have years ofe x p e r i e n c e ,ensuring you ofvalue and servicefor money,” said adetermined Des.One of the thef o r t h c o m i n gprojects which Fingal Engineeringare carrying out for a local agricul-tural concern is a solar poweredautomatic gate system. In thiscase, the proposed location of thegate is over 1 kilometre from the

nearest power supply, making the provision ofa power supply extremely expensive. This system works with low voltage where the

batteries are chargedby solar power.Calculations arecarried out by TAUtechnology and arebased on geographicallocation and antici-pated frequency ofusage. Home security is some-thing we all need to beaware of at all time, butmost particularly in timesof recession, when burglarsat at their most active, Mostdaytime burglaries takeplace in unoccupied homes. When leaving the house, close any windows whichcan be climbed into. Makesure you don’t leave valu-ables where they can beseen through the window.Secure your windows,

doors, sheds and garagesand don’t cut more keysthan you have to. If youhave a spare, give it tosomeone you trust. Don’tleave obvious signs of avacant apartment, such asclosed curtains duringdaylight hours. Just in caseyou are broken into, youshould mark your propertyso it can be identified.Don’t leave loose cash athome and keep bank cardsin a safe place. Consider

insuring any valuables youhave such as laptops,Playstations etc.

WINDOWSWe can all recall thatfamous line from the firstever televised children’sprogramme “..and todaywe’re going through theround window...” cuemusic. Windows can comein many varying designs;

windows that open outwardon a slant, windows withwooden frames, others withPVC, windows that aretinted, reflective, doubleglazed and the list goes on. Windows play an incred-ibly integral part of thefront, back and sides toyour domestic domain, bethem round, square, triangle or a shape yet to bedefined, as the glass spyholes to the outside worldor inside as the case maybe. To help accentuate thesunlight, shut out trafficnoise and raise awarenessof what the climate is doing

it’s important get themcorrectly installed, thismeans a trusted joiner andthe choice in the NorthCounty is quite significant.

CARPETSOver the years DIY hasentered into the realm nearto convenience as one canget; Laminate flooring hasproven popular whendesiring the wood effectwhich is both a alternativecheaper to hardwood andeasier to assemble. Thefinished effect can behighly aesthetic. Carpetsare another set of rulesaltogether, limitless inchoice of colour and style, thickness and patterns, carpeting remains the evertraditional flooring option. There’s something quite

fulfilling watching thekids play with their toycars exploiting the patternof the carpet to imagina-tive effect. The greataspect that remains aboutcarpeting is that carpetscan do so much to reflecta persons persona. Carpetcan accentuate a naturallylightened room orbrighten up a children’sbedroom providing brightprimary colours orcomplex patterns for theliving room. Takingadvice from an experi-enced carpet fitter or anexpert in flooring is amust as few can carpet astairwell as well as theprofessionals. Similarlyone should invest time toconsider a trip to a carpetshop and browse the wideselection of carpets available to the discerningshopper.

The inaugural Bridgestone Balbriggan FoodFestival gave local North County producers thechance to showcase their wares in Ireland’s fastestgrowing large town. The idea of the festival wasquite simple, a chance for members of the publicto sample local goods and produce. These rangedfrom fruit to fish, with vegetables and deli meatsshowcased alongside some of the North County’sbest eateries, with menus which would suit anypocket. The festival featured food and productdemonstrations with a chance to have a littlenibble of the various tasty delights on show.Another unique selling point for the festival wasthe offer from sponsors, Bridgestone, who arerenowned in the restaurant guide business, to givean outstanding local artisan food producer orrestaurant a year long mentoring programme fromJohn McKenna, whose business and culinaryexpertise would help the lucky recipient take thenext big step for success. The judges were soimpressed with the standard of the exhibitors thatthey decided to make two mentoring awards. The

Bagel Bar in Balbriggan, run by Alan Delaney andCinful Bakes, run by Aisling Lynam whoserecipes are based on cinnamon.President of the Balbriggan Chamber OfCommerce, Joe English was delighted by a bigturnout of around 500 for the festival, withexhibitors getting terrific feedback from ordinarymembers of the public who are their target market.“I don’t think in our wildest dreams we wouldhave had such a good turnout to see the best theNorth county has to offer. People are buzzed up,it’s a wonderful showcase for local small businessin the food sector. We’re in stricken times and theidea behind this festival is to get the local commu-nity pulling together buying locally producedgoods. If a euro is spent locally, it grows and thatmakes the local economy work,” he said. Thefestival was completely funded by Bridgestonewith exhibitors being able to showcase their culi-nary delights free of charge.

WINTERService

The winter months canmean extra wear and tearfor your vehicle.Remember that keepingyour car well maintainedwith regular car mainte-nance checks can guar-antee warm, secure andreliable motoring. At the beginning of theWinter Season spray somelubricant oil into eachdoor lock. This preventsthe key cylinders fromgetting a little stiff as theyage. It’s important to haveyour car (or light commer-cial) serviced, including afull safety check, aswinter approaches. This isthe time of the year whenthe weather is becomingharsher and the long, darkevenings are almost hereand rather than walkingshort distances, many tendto use the car for theshortest of trips. The basic requirements atthis time of year are the

safety checks, especiallythe tyres. Looking afterthe simple things on yourcar can make life hasslefree when winter hits. Some of these thingsinclude, wipers, lights, coolant, oil and otherlevels. The car alwaysseems to come second, butdon’t compromise onsafety. Regular servicingwill be more cost effec-tive.Regular servicing meanspeace of mind and asaving in the long term, but it can add value toyour car when you go totrade it in. A full servicehistory is something carbuyers are looking formore and more, so ifyou’re concerned aboutthe residual value of yourvehicle, take it to a garagewith a reputation. Regularmaintenance will prolongthe life of your car andnow with the short darkevenings, wind, rain andfrost as well as the oddspell of snow, these arethe harsh conditionsdrivers can expect thiscoming winter. Nobodywas 100 percent preparedfor the cruel winter wehad last year, so don’t becaught this year. Yourlocal mechanic or garagecan assist you to prepareyour vehicle for the longwinter ahead.

Battery

In winter time yourbattery is placed underparticular strain. Whentemperatures fall onlysome of the battery’scapacity is available forstarting the car. Adepleted battery canfreeze even at a fewdegrees below zero.

Windscreen wipers

The importance of wind-screen wipers is oftenunder estimated. Yoursafety depends on clearvision. It is important tocheck your windscreenwasher reservoir to ensurethere is sufficient winteradditive to prevent it fromfreezing.

New Initiative May CreateJobs In North County

Deputy Darragh O’Brien (FF) haswelcomed the launch of theGovernment’s integrated plan for trade, tourism and investment saying that it willmean more jobs for the North County.“An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen has justlaunched a five-year integrated plan,‘Trading and Investing in a SmartEconomy’ which will focus on trade, tourism and investment and aims tocreate 300,000 jobs and boost exports byone third,” said Deputy O’Brien. “Thewhole focus of the plan is to create jobsand has the potential to benefit NorthCounty businesses and enterprise. Theplan aims to create over 150,000 directnew jobs in manufacturing, tourism andinternational trading services. The aim is

also to create an additional 150,000 spin-off jobs nationally.” He continued, “TheForeign Trade Council will promoteIreland abroad with new ‘brand Ireland’initiatives such as exploiting themarketing potential of St. Patrick’s Dayand trade missions. The aim will be toopen up new markets for small andmedium-sized enterprises. The Councilwill also work to ensure that our visapolicy is aligned with strategic businessinterests and our overseas diplomaticagency representatives,” added O’Brien.“These are tough times for business andenterprise so I am pleased to see that thisplan will bring all of the relevantGovernment departments and agenciestogether to ensure that everyone workstogether in an optimal way to ensure thebest results for North Dublin and theentire country.” he concluded.

Skerries man, Adam Burke islooking to undertake one of thetoughest rowing events in theworld, the Atlantic Rowing Race. The ocean rowing eventstretches for 4,700km betweenthe Canary Islands and theWest Indies, and is heralded asone of the mostgruelling sea eventsworldwide. Originally,Adam was to be joinedby a fellow Skerriesman, BrendanGuildea, and the pairwere to undertake theexpedition together in2011. However, Adamwas recentlycontacted by PeterWilliams, from SouthDublin, who proposed that hepartake with an English teamwho were looking for more teammembers. This renderedBrendan unable to partake dueto college commitments.Speaking to the CountyLeader, Adam explained howthe race involves “a two yeareffort. It focuses on three aspectsof preparation; fundraising, preparing your boat, and

preparing your body. It costsroughly €70,000 to take part inthe race overall, so when I wasoffered the opportunity to trialwith the team from England, itwas the better option. It works

out cheaper and moreefficient, as I’ll be partof a six man teamrather than a two-man”. The race isrenowned for itsintense hardship, yetAdam relishes thechallenge. Two menwho undertook therace in 2005, JamesCracknell and BenFogle, released a docu-mentary in 2006 show-

casing the harsh weather andimmense physical toll the pairhad to endure in order tocomplete the race. Laughing,Adam explained that “whileanyone else who watched thatwould run a mile, I justremember saying to myself ‘Iwant to do that’. Adam nowmust undertake trials with theEnglish team to secure his placefor the 2011 event.

Choosing the right serviceprovider for you is some-thing you should spendtime thinking about. If youwere going to spend€1,000 would you checkto ensure the companiesyou are looking at bestserve your needs? Therelationship you have withyour recruiter can have ahuge impact on yourfuture.

How do agencies make money? They make money by firstlyworking incredibly hard atcreating relationships withemployers, understandingtheir business and theirculture. Agencies make afee from the employer.

Recruitment agencieshowever are ten a

penny! Why does

a company use a particularagency? The agency has todo their research (far morethan the candidate), theyhave to convince theemployer they understandthe company, the type, cal ibre, background andmindset of the candidatethey need and still it’s noplacement no fee. I f i tdoesn’t work out – refund isdue!

How do you fit into this? I f you were an employerlooking to fill a vacancy youwould choose a large agency(like CPL with specialist divi-sions for al l areas) or aboutique agency specialisingin the area your vacancy isbased. As a candidate youshould register with agencieswith the mindset of thatemployer! It is in the agency’s bestinterests to place goodcandidates or they will not becal led again! Any goodagency is quite discerningabout whom they send totheir clients. Is that you? If itis remember to choose youragency wel l . Dress toimpress! Treat the agencyinterview as seriously as

you would an employer inter-view – they are your conduit!People do business withpeople; i f you want anagency to represent you tothe varied client base theyhave, recognise that andwork it! What benefits thembenefits you!

The very best of luck!
