Grouping Feedback & Discernment Team

For more than a year there has been news about the

“Renew My Church” project that Cardinal Cupich has begun in

the Archdiocese of Chicago. Perhaps this effort could be called a

“renewed missionary effort” here in Chicago. I think that this

can be said because a missionary seeks to facilitate in people a

relation with Christ the Risen Lord, to make disciples, who then

build communities, which inspire others to follow Christ. As I

know from seventeen years of personal experience in mission, all

the while these ministries are being done, there is a need to

establish administration and structures which support the

ministries. “Renew My Church” asks us to imagine in a creative

way how to do the ministries of the Church in the 21

st

Century

and to see how this can best be done with the personnel and

resources that are available. One essential component of the

RMC process is the “Grouping Feedback & Discernment Team.”

This team of five persons from the parish will work

with me as the primary “discerners” in the process. We will

work with the Teams from Holy Family Parish, Our Lady of

Pompeii Shrine and the St. JPII Newman Center at UIC. These

teams will work together to review and discuss the data for our

neighborhood and the experience of the people here over the

many years. The data includes all the pastoral ministries done by

each Church institution: Masses, Sacraments, care of the sick,

bereavement ministries, religious formation and the other

spiritual activities. In addition, there is the current financial

reality and the demographic reality of a growing neighborhood.

The church buildings are some of the oldest structures in the

City of Chicago, so data includes the analysis that was done of

the structures, electricity, plumbing, heating and condition in

general. With a dozen meetings over the next three months, the

teams will assess the reality and plan for the future existence

and work of the Church in this neighborhood of the Archdiocese

of Chicago – a plan that will be elaborated with the RMC

administrators of the Archdiocese and finalized by Cardinal

Cupich.

The members of the Group Feedback & Discernment

Team for Notre Dame Parish are: Martha Álvarez, Maggie

Crulcich, David Deutsch, Larry Sorce and Mark Valentino.

Among them there is some 250 years of involvement with and

love for Notre Dame Parish. I am very happy that they accepted

my invitation to work on this difficult project. I am confident

that they will do an excellent job. I ask for your prayers for all of

Hace más que un año desde que hemos comenzado a

escuchar las noticias sobre el Programa “Renueva Mi Iglesia” que

el Cardenal Cupich ha iniciado en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago.

Quizás se puede considerar esta iniciativa como una del esfuerzo

misional renovado. Digo eso porque un misionero desea facilitar

en el pueblo una relación con Cristo el Señor Resucitado, formar

discípulos, quienes hacen comunidades, las cuales inspiran a

otros a seguir a Cristo. Con mis diecisiete años de experiencia

personal en misión, mientras que se hagan estos ministerios, es

necesario establecer una administración y las estructuras que

apoyan los ministerios. “Renueva Mi Iglesia” nos pide a imaginar

una manera creativa de hacer los ministerios de la Iglesia en el

Siglo Vigésimo Primero y averiguar la manera mejor de hacerlo

conforme a las personas y los recursos disponibles. Un

componente esencial del proceso de RMI es el Equipo de

Respuesta en Conjunto y Discernimiento de la Agrupación.

Estas cinco personas trabajarán conmigo como los

participantes principales del proceso del discernimiento.

Trabajaremos con los equipos de la Parroquia de la Sagrada

Familia, el Oratorio de Nuestra Señora de Pompea y el Centro

Católico San Juan Pablo II de la UIC. Estos equipos trabajarán

juntos para revisar y considerar los datos del vecindario y la

experiencia de por años que la gente ha tenido. Los datos

incluyen todos los ministerios pastorales hechos por cada

institución eclesiástica: las misas, los sacramentos, los enfermos,

los muertos y sus dolientes, la formación religiosa y las demás

actividades espirituales. Además, hay la realidad financiera

actual y demográfica de un vecindario creciente. Los edificios de

las parroquias son unas de las estructuras más antiguas de la

Ciudad de Chicago y, por eso, los datos incluyen un análisis

hecho de las estructuras con sus sistemas de electricidad,

plomería, calefacción y las condiciones en general. Con una

docena de reuniones por los próximos tres meses, los equipos

harán una evaluación de la realidad y planearán la existencia

futura de la Iglesia y sus obras en este vecindario de la

Arquidiócesis de Chicago – un plan que será elaborado con la

administración arquidiocesano de RMI y finalizado por el

Cardenal Cupich.

Notre Dame de Chicago Parish 4 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Religious Education & Sacramental Preparation

As the Archdiocese of Chicago and, in particular, Notre

Dame Parish continue to implement the “Renew My Church”

initiative of Cardinal Cupich, it would be good to see how one

of the pastoral priorities – Evangelization – affects the religious

education programming at this parish. Since last year this

program has been under a renewal process. With the surprise

last May that the parish was being “activated” for the Second

Wave of the implementation of “Renew My Church,” the

religious education and sacramental preparation programs must

proceed accordingly. Therefore, a new program in the old style

will not begin in September. There is no reason to begin a

program which will have to be changed again in a few months

with the RMC Plan for our Grouping. The only exception will

be the students who were in the first year of instruction for

Confirmation last year. They will continue and be confirmed

with the students from the Children of Peace School, Holy

Family and Holy Rosary Parishes. This collaboration is exactly

what RMC is asking us to do.

There are a few “old styles” that have been used over

the years for Catholic children who attended public schools.

Those of a certain age can remember when the Catholic children

were allowed to leave class and go to the closest Catholic school

for instruction once a week. Then the day came when parishes

began to conduct religious education programs on Saturday for

the children. Eventually, it became obvious that

the parents needed the opportunity to grow in

their faith as well. Programs of parent instruction

were developed, usually associated with the

reception of sacraments. In the last year the

amount of parent instruction time here was

tripled. But this is not enough.

There must be a “new style.” The

Catholic Church is moving to a concept of Family

Faith Formation as one of the components of the

parish’s work of Evangelization. The entire family

is given the opportunity to grow in their faith. The

other components of Evangelization must involve

the entire adult community. By growing in our faith, we are

better able to reach out to others who either do not practice

their faith or have no faith at all, inviting all to be a part of the

community of faith in Christ the Risen Lord. This is

Evangelization.

As we move through the process of RMC in the months

to come, there will be opportunities for the adult faith

community to grow in faith. Parents of children ready for

religious instruction will be encouraged to attend. In this way,

they will be prepared to participate in Family Faith Formation

the following year. Then together we can all begin to reach out

to the large majority of residents of our neighborhood who are

not part of the faith community. “Go and teach all nations.”

La Educación Religiosa y la Preparación Sacramental

Mientras que la Arquidiócesis de Chicago y, en

particular, la Parroquia de Notre Dame continúen la

implementación de la iniciativa “Renueva Mi Iglesia” del

Cardenal Cupich, sería bueno ver como una de las prioridades

pastorales – la Evangelización – afecta la programación de la

educación religiosa en esta parroquia. Desde el año pasado el

programa ha estado en renovación. Con la sorpresa del mayo

pasado que la parroquia ha sido “activada” para la Honda

Segunda de la implementación de “Renueva Mi Iglesia,” los

programas de la educación religiosa y la preparación

sacramental han de proceder conforme. Por eso, un programa

nuevo en el estilo viejo no se iniciará en septiembre. No hay

razón para iniciar un programa que, dentro de pocos meses,

tendrá que ser cambiado de nuevo con el Plan de RMI de

nuestra agrupación. La única excepción será en favor de los

estudiantes del año pasado en su primer año de instrucción para

la Confirmación. Ellos van a continuar y serán confirmados con

los estudiantes de la Escuela Niños de Paz y de las Parroquias

Sagrada Familia y Santa Rosario. Esta colaboración es

exactamente lo que el RMI nos pide hacer.

Hay unos “estilos viejos” que se han usado por años

para la educación religiosa de los niños católicos que iban a las

escuelas públicas. Los de una cierta edad recuerdan los días

cuando los niños se salían de sus clases para ir a una escuela

católica cercana una vez a la semana. Luego vino el

día cuando las parroquias comenzaron a ofrecer en

los días sábado sus programas de la educación

religiosa para los niños. Luego, fue obvio que los

padres de familia también necesitaban de una

oportunidad de crecer en su fe. Se desarrollaron

programas de instrucción para los papás,

normalmente asociados con la recepción de los

sacramentos. El año pasado se aumentó por tres

veces la cantidad de tiempo dedicado a la

instrucción de los padres de fe. Pero no es

suficiente.

Hay de ser un “estilo nuevo.” La Iglesia Católica

está alcanzando a un concepto de la Formación de Fe en Familia

como uno de los componentes de la obra de la evangelización de

la parroquia. Se ofrece a la familia entera la oportunidad de

crecer en la fe. Los otros componentes de la evangelización ha de

involucrar a la comunidad entera de los adultos. Por medio de

crecer en la fe, estamos capacitados mejor para recibir a los

demás que no practican la fe o ni la tienen, invitando a todos a

formar parte de la comunidad de fe en Cristo el Señor

Resucitado. Eso es la evangelización.

Al continuar el proceso de RMI en los meses que

vienen, habrá las oportunidades para que la comunidad de fe de

los adultos crezca en su fe. Los papás cuyos hijos estarán listos

para la educación religiosa estarán animados a participar. En

esta manera, estarán preparados a participar el año siguiente en

la Formación de Fe en Familia. Luego, todos juntos,

comenzaremos a alcanzar a la mayoría de los residentes de

nuestro vecindario que no son parte de la comunidad de fe.
