The second Wagner’s opera of the DIOF, <Tannhauser>! This opera is based on the main motif of the legend of Tannhauser who histor-ically existed, about a story of Tannhauser, a knight, who fell into temptation of Venus, a symbol of physical pleasure, who is saved by the pure love of Elizabeth. Operas of Wagner, written and composed himself, are famous for consistency between music, story and pro-nunciation. Particularly, <Tannhauser> is the work most beloved by 'Wagnerians'. The opera festival shows a real ‘feast of opera’ by stag-ing various works which are difficult to be performed in Korea, including <The Force of Destiny> with the best casting in the history of the festival, <Tannhaus-er> from Germany, <Tosca> with Daniel Oren, the best existing conductor, and <Don Carlo> with Gang, Byeong-Woon, a bass with who is a national treasure, on his last opera stage. Grand and special prizes will be given to individuals and groups who show their best ability during the festival. Did you know that there is a man-made lake only 15 minutes away from downtown by taxi?! It’s called Su-seong Lake (수성못) and is surrounded by numerous coffee shops and restaurants. However, there is one coffee shop that stands out among the rest, A Twosome Place. This newly built dessert café is built within the New York New York restaurant; with the assistant man-ager, Jung Yoon Jung (정윤정) managing both establish-ments. A Twosome Place is a very well-known name around Daegu, and other cities here in Korea… But, this one is a bit different than the others. The Suseong Lake, 'A Twosome Place', is the only location in Daegu that has a brunch menu in the popular chain! The brunch menu, which is offered from 10-3 pm every

day, currently has four items: Twosome Eggs Benedict (9,500 won), Ricotta Cheese Platter (9,000 won), Coun-try Breakfast (9,500 won), and Spinach Mushroom Om-elet (9,000 won). Also, there is a seasonal menu: White Cloud Latte, Royal Milk Tea, and Citron Lemon Tea. Just a quick note about the food. The brunches were a great taste of home! The portions are just the right size and they were all cooked to perfection. They also have delicious coffee (Americano 4,100 won), tea (Herb Tea 4,800 won), fresh fruit juices (Kiwi Banana 5,500 won), lattes (Cookie & Cream Latte 5,800 won), and frappes (Choco Cream 5,500 won). The desserts were absolute-ly delectable! We got to sample cakes and macaroons: Black Forest Cake (5,100 won), Red Velvet Cake (5,000

Sand-wiches, wraps, and salads are also available.I’ve been to many A Twosome Places, but this one has a different atmosphere than the others. The first floor offers a huge variety of seating options, and vibes too! Some of them are a quiet library setting, private group meeting rooms, high bar tops, and two-seater tables. But the most enticing environment was the relaxing, large open windowed area overlooking a grassy lawn with a beautiful running stream. The upstairs is an open patio deck shared by the New York New York restaurant. The entire first floor is non-smoking. But have no fear smokers, the upstairs is the place for you

to go and get your fix! Another huge plus to the Suseong A Twosome Place is that almost all of the tables have an elec-trical outlet! So, if you’re out on a date around the lake, having a family outing, or studying hard for those exams, then this place is perfect for you to charge your phone, along with your mind. On a side note, if you are looking for a part time job, they are looking for some dedicated and fun people. Stop by and talk to Jung, Yoo Jung. Oh, and I’m sure you’re curious how to get there? Get in a taxi and say, “Take me to New York New York, please.” Or, show this to the driver: “수성못에 있는 뉴욕뉴욕으로 데려가 주세요.”


Have you noticed the lack of true Italian restaurants here in Daegu? It is true that there are many pasta and pizza places, but not very many that have an authentic Italian tasting cuisine. Pietra’s menu has some of the tastiest Italian food I’ve had in my four years of being here in Korea. Pietra is a brand new modern Italian restaurant nestled in the Beomeo (범어) area. The two story building has two different atmospheres. The first floor focuses on the coffee and juice bar, but still is used at restaurant seating. As for the second floor, there is seating for 14 people with a wide open view of the whole kitchen. It’s a very cozy, yet spacious, environment due to the floor to ceiling windows that allows the natural sunlight to shine through. Chef Kim, Sang Hwan (김상환) started his 13 year ca-reer by achieving his Culinary Arts degree, and then

worked in Daegu for two years as a chef. He wanted to work in the Italian side of the business, so he moved to Seoul and worked there for six years as an Execu-tive Chef. He perfected his techniques, and with his wife, Seok, Min Kyoung (석민경), brought them back to Deagu to try and make it an international ‘hotspot’. He hopes that he can do this through his authentic Italian cuisine at Pietra. Seok, Min Kyoung (석민경) is the man-ager of the fresh juice bar on the first floor. Chef Sang Hwan and his wife, take pride in offering the freshest ingredients, and in the healthiest ways pos-sible. Pietra doesn’t use salt in its food, but rather the cheeses add the saltiness that is desired. Besides not using salt, they also don’t use MSG. Chef Sang Hwan says, “Fresh foods and fresh ingredients are the most important thing for a restaurants success.” Min Kyo-ung also uses only the freshest ingredients and the only

sweetener she uses is honey.The menu reflects this freshness. It has the usual foods: pizza, pasta, salad, steaks, and desserts. However, they are far from usual. We were awarded the pleasure to try the Insalata e Nero Caprese (14,000 won), Gorgonzola Pizza (13,000 won), Spaghetti di Pancetta e Peperoccino (15,000 won), and Filetto di Manzo (39,000 won).

Let’s start with the Insalata e Nero Caprese. A Caprese salad typically has basil, mozzarella, and tomato to rep-resent the Italian flag colors. However, this one is a bit different in the fact that it uses mozzarella dipped in a squid ink batter and deep-fried, baby tomatoes with no skins, and salad greens. The plate is beautifully deco-rated with streaks of tomato sauce, freshly made pesto sauce, and a balsamic vinaigrette reduction. The cheese is warm and gooey, and the sauces are a perfect blend for dipping the warm cheesy balls of dough into. Next was the authentically made Gorgonzola Pizza. Chef Sang Hwan is especially proud of this pizza, as he should be, because he imports real Italian flours. These create the elastic soft dough that is often missed by many foreigners. The oven he uses is imported from Italy, so it gives a fast replacement for the brick oven without the large requirement of space.

The Spaghetti di Pancetta e Peperoccino was the third dish we were able to enjoy. A thick spaghetti is topped with bacon, tomatoes, black olives, red and yellow peppers, mushrooms, eggplant, and then drizzled with some EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) for that extra special touch of flavor. This pasta is light and flavorful, and is typically spicy, but with a simple request to the chef, it can be easily modified.The final dish, Filetto di Manzo, is one of the best steaks I’ve ever had! It was better than any of the steak restau-rants I’ve visited, and even better than the ones I tasted while my time as a soldier on the Army base. If you are craving steak, try this one! It might seem a bit pricy, but it is well worth it! Chef Sang Hwan pan grills his steak, because it is healthier, in an herb infused olive oil. The beef tenderloin is super tender, juicy and full of flavor. Perfectly cooked fresh vegetables (crispy green beans

and moist mushrooms, to name a few) are served on the side, along with a whole grain mustard. Other menu items are the Insalata di Funghi Misto (12,000 won), Insalata e Griglia di Manzo (20,000 won), Margherita Pizza (13,000 won), Manzo Funghi Pizza (19,000 won), Spaghetti alla Am-articiana (14,000 won), Spaghetti con Filetto di Mazno e Gorgonzola (19,000 won), and Risotto al Frutti di Mare (16,000 won)Ready to find how to get there and sample their menu items? It’s very simple. Take the green Line towards Yeongnam University (영남대) and get off at Beomeo station (범어역). Take Exit 1 and go straight. You’ll make a right at the World Smart Phone store and continue down for another five to seven minutes. Then, you’ll see an intersection of two small alleys on your right side. Take the left alley and it’s just a one minute walk from there! You’ll be able to see the beautiful modern building on the right.


If you are craving some food with a little bit of difference this is the bar for you. The Bombay lounge is a relatively new addition to the Daegu bar scene and has fast be-come a popular hang out with Westerners and Koreans alike. The staff are friendly and willing to help any way they can and the drinks menu is extensive. The Tom Collins are delicious and worth a try.

Although the bar has an Indian theme it isn’t a restaurant but more of a bar that serves Indian based food. Even on a weeknight the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting with loud music that’s perfect to have a few drinks too. The bar specializes in cocktails (any variation you can imagine) and hookah which can be tried as water, milk or even wine hookah. Hookah smoking is a personal taste so if you don’t like it then maybe avoid sitting at the bar but it is a well ventilated place so you won’t be taking in a lot of second hand smoke. A popular edition to the bar is the beer pong table which you can pay extra to play as gin and tonic pong or even Jack and coke pong. Tandoori Chicken is a popular favorite. Especially the Tandoori chicken and cheese burger. 봄베이 라운지가 인도를 테마로 하고 있지만 식당이라기보다는 인도풍의 음식을 제공하는 바이다. 주중에도 분위기는 편안하고 한 잔 하면서 즐기기에 완벽한 시끄러운 음악이 함께 한다. 이 곳은 (당신이 생각하는 모든 종류의) 칵테일과 물, 우유 심지어 와인으로 할 수 있는 물담배가 전문이다. 물담배는 개인적인 취향이기에 좋아하지 않는다면 바에 앉지 않기를 권하지만 라운지 내의 환기 시설이 잘 되어 있어 간접흡연을 많이 하지 않을 것이다. 바에서 가장 인기있는 것은 비어퐁인데 추가요금을 내면 진앤토닉퐁이나 잭앤코크퐁도 가능하다. 진 몇 잔을 마시고 나면 탁구공을 겨냥해서 던지는 것은 더 어려워진다. 메뉴의 음식도 다양하지만 탄두리 치킨이 인기있다. 특히 탄두리 치킨과 치즈버거가 말이다.

The Bombay lounge is situated downtown above ‘Italy, Italy’ on the street in-between ‘Communes’ bar and ‘Gogo’s’ so it’s perfectly located for a few drinks on a Friday night. The décor of the bar is well thought out and welcoming. As well as good food and varied drinks you can also try your hand at darts or pool. 봄베이 라운지는 시내의 ‘이태리 이태리’ 윗층에 자리하고 있으며 Commune과 고고 사이의 거리에 있어 금요일 밤에 몇 잔 하기에 딱 좋은 위치이다. 바의 장식은 세심하게 계산되었고 손님을 따뜻하게 반기는 듯 하다. 맛있는 음식과 다양한 술뿐만 아니라 다트나 당구도 즐길 수 있다.

The Bombay Lounge is a great addition to the Dae-gu nightlife scene. It’s a perfect place to celebrate a birthday or a special occasion as the bar also does beer towers and cocktail towers to share. Anju ExpeditionDiscovering the Food & Alcohol Pairings of Korea

It was a rainy Saturday afternoon. I was bored and hungry. The only thing thinner than my wallet was my enthusiasm for the same old bars and restaurants. It was time for something new, something exciting, but also something affordable. I conscripted a comrade and drew up plans for an expedition. Our mission: eat delicious meals and get drunk. To guide us was a Kore-an tradition, the art of combining the right food with the right alcohol. Its name is Anju, and this is our journey to understand it.

비 오는 토요일 오후였다. 나는 지루하고 배가 고팠다. 내

지갑보다 유일하게 가벼운 것은 늘 같은 식당과 술집에 대

한 열정 정도였다. 뭔가 새롭고 흥미롭고 동시에 합리적인

것을 찾을 때였다. 나는 한 명의 전우를 깨워 새로운 탐험

을 위한 계획을 세웠다. 우리의 임무는 맛있는 식사를 하고

취하는 것. 우리를 이끈 것은 한국의 전통 중 적당한 음식에

딱 맞는 술을 결합시키는 기술이었다. 그것은 ‘안주’이며,

이 이야기는 ‘안주’를 이해하기 위한 여정에 대한 것이다.

Chapter One: Makgeolli

According to the weather, makgeolli was our first objective. We discovered an inexpensive noodle house near Jungangno. Packed with elderly patrons wise in the ways of Anju, it was the ideal place to learn more.

Also known as nongju, or "farmers' alcohol," its traditions are closely linked to the rural lifestyle. For example, why is makgeolli popular on rainy days? Because farmers would stay home and drink when poor weather prevented field work. Why is makgeolli popular after hiking? Because mountains and farmlands are of-ten neighbors. (Plus it helps circulate blood through a hiker's sore muscles). Clearly of agricultural origins, makgeolli is fermented from rice or wheat, and often flavored with produce like apple, corn or bean. For this veggie alcohol we needed a veggie Anju: Pajun (battered and fried spring onions). It's soft, salty and meat-less, the perfect Anju for the smooth, milky makgeolli.

날씨 때문에 막걸리가 우리의 첫 번째 목표가 되었다. 우리

는 중앙로 근처의 저렴한 국수집을 발견했다. 안주에 익숙

한 노년층의 고객들이 가득한 덕에 그곳은 안주에 대해 배

우기 좋은 이상적인 장소였다. ‘농주’ 혹은 ‘농부의 술’ 이라

고 알려져 있는 막걸리의 전통은 농촌의 삶과 밀접하게 연

결되어 있다. 예를 들어 막걸리는 왜 비 오는 날에 인기가

있을까? 농부들은 궂은 날씨 때문에 들일을 할 수 없는 날에

는 집에 있으면서 막걸리를 마시곤 했다. 막걸리는 왜 등산

후에 마시는 술일까? 왜냐하면 산과 농지는 보통 같이 붙어

있기 때문이다. (덧붙여서 등산객의 근육통이 생긴 부위의

혈액 순환을 도와준다.) 명백하게 농업에 기원을 둔 까닭에

막걸리는 쌀이나 밀로 발효된 술이며 종종 사과나 옥수수,

콩으로 풍미를 더한다. 막걸리가 순수하게 채소로 만들어

진 술이기에 우리는 고기가 없는 안주를 곁들였다. 바로 파

전이다. 파전은 부드럽고 짭짤하며 고기가 없어 뽀얀 빛깔

의 목넘김이 좋은 막걸리에 완벽한 안주이다.

Chapter Two: Beer

As the rain passed we continued our drunken journey. Our second objective was beer.

Unlike the indigenous makgeolli or soju, many still con-sider beer a western influence. So when under such an influence, western-style Anju is ideal. Breaded, crispy and fatty foods are beer beneficiaries. The carbonation can wash down a mouthful of chips; the slight acidity can dislodge a greasy pizza. An icy beer is the ying to a fried chicken's yang.

So we decided to balance our Chi with Chimek (chicken & mekju) and headed to Dalk-ddong-jeep Alley. Just northeast of Dongdaegu Station lies this officially-desig-nated "city treasure," a block of restaurants specializing in fried chicken gizzards. As we drank our Cass beer from Hite glasses, we wondered about beer in Korea.

Only arriving in the early 1900's, it turns out Korean beer is still in its infant state. Well more like a state of infants

being stomped out by two bully teenagers; Hite-Jinro (Hite, Max, and Dry Finish d) and Oriental Breweries (Cass, OB, Cafri, and Budweiser) dominate the industry with their bland and mass-marketed labels. Although there has been hope since 2011, with the relaxation of laws that restricted distribution from micro-breweries. But not waiting for that to bear fruit, we resumed our Anju adventure... 적이었다. 빵가루가 입혀져 바삭하고 기름기가 있는 안주

닭똥집 골목으로 향했다. 동대구역의 북동쪽 편에 공식적

으로 지정된 대구의 보물이 있는데 튀긴 닭똥집으로 특화

된 식당들이 밀집된 구역이다. 우리는 하이트 생맥주부터

카스까지 마시며 한국의 맥주에 대해 궁금해하기 시작했

다. 겨우 1900년대 초에 맥주가 한국에 상륙했을 때, 한

국의 맥주는 여전히 걸음마 단계에 머물렀다. 마치 두 명

의 고약한 십대들(하이트 진로와 OB)에게 치이는 아이같

ing both external relations and internal organs. It first poured down the peninsula in the 1200's via invading Mongols, who in turn pillaged it from Persia. Since then soju has saturated the country, with over three billion bottles sold per recent year. In the machine of Kore-an society, Soju acts like industrial-strength lubricant. Sometimes tastes like it too. That is, unless certain conditions are met, like frosty bottles, warm moods and, of course, proper Anju.

With this in mind we visited soju's iconic home: the po-jangmacha. These unregulated street vendors are often shut down by authorities. Fortunately, next to Daegu Station some of these red-tented relics still stand, and still offer their unique atmosphere.

Patrons sat around outdoor tables, contemplating, rem-iniscing, concealing sorrows with laughs, surrounded by green bottles. Each crack of an aluminum seal an-nounced the arrival of a new friend, a jester, a therapist, a philosopher. But soju's greatest role is companion to Anju. While makgeolli or beer flush away and replace

foods' flavor, soju always precedes and enhances it. For one, a shot of soju cleanses the palette, preparing the taste buds to fully enjoy their next food encounter, hence soju's popularity alongside delicacies like raw beef or certain seafoods. Conversely, since soju can be harsh on the unfamiliar or sober, following a shot with spicy soups or marinated meats provides a tasty chaser.

Meanwhile, the friendly ajummas at our pojangmacha were Anju authorities. Their menu offered the perfect compliments to soju, such as bulgogi, chicken feet and mackerel. We decided on gomjangah, or spicy eel, a classic Anju and a satisfying conclusion to our journey.

주이면서 우리의 여정에 만족스런 결론이 될 곰장어 혹은

양념 곰장어를 먹기로 결정했다

Blaine Harden is the author of the international best-seller, Escape from Camp 14. It is the heart wrench-ing story of Shin Dong-hyuk, the only person born in a North Korean prison camp to escape to the West. He recently took some time out from his schedule to an-swer questions about the book and the current situation with North Korea.블레인 하든은 국제적인 베스트셀러인 “제14 수용소 탈출”의 작가이다. 이 책은 북한 수용소에서 태어나 유일하게 서부로 탈출에 성공한 신동혁씨의 애간장 녹이는 이야기를 그리고 있다. 작가는 최근 대구컴파스를 위해 바쁜 스케줄도 불구하고 그의 책과 현재 북한의 상황에 대한 질문에 대해 답하였다.

What initially attracted you to the write this story?이 이야기를 쓰게 된 계기가 무엇입니까?

A: I was covering the Koreas for the Washington Post and my editor pushed me to try to find a fresh and powerful story that would help explain why the Kim fami-ly dynasty has been able to maintain a totalitarian system for so long in North Korea. I met Shin for lunch, found his story to be amazing, and then persuaded him to work with me on a book. It took him about nine months to agree, about two more years to finish the interviews, and then he was suspicious of me until many months after the book came out.

A: The success of the book is due to the power of Shin’s story. Readers, I think, feel they should learn more about North Korea, but the subject is very dark and depressing, and most of the coverage is repetitive and not very insightful. I should know because I wrote a lot of dull stories myself. What Shin’s story does is place a reader inside a labor camp with a young boy who is struggling to survive. Shin’s life is terribly bleak, but the arc of his story slowly improves. As readers follow Shin, they understand of the repression that sustains the Kim family. Plus it is an adventure: with a thrilling escape.

A: He wasn’t delusional. Guards had indoctrinated him to believe in the rules of the camp above any loyalty to his family. He was a boy doing what he had been told to do. He believed that obedience – snitching on people who violated camp rules -- would mean more food and less work. He did not feel guilt about the death of his mother and brother until many years after his escape, when he learned that people in the outside world saw his betrayal of his family as shocking and wrong.

Recently, an agreement has been reached to re-open the Kaesong Industrial Complex as well as the recom-mencement of family reunions later this month. A: Both are important. Anything that exposes North Koreans to the outside world is useful.

You interviewed a few North Korean prison guards for your book? How was that experience? Did you feel any

A: I don’t feel anger towards the guards. The fact that they are willing to speak to Western reporters means they are full of remorse.

A: I think it is unfair to judge defectors who want to go back. They are almost always under severe stress, with symptoms of clinical paranoia, and guilt about those they left behind. If a few go back home, it should not be seen as an affirmation of the quality of life un-der the Kim dictatorship. There is overwhelming factual evidence that life in North Korea is difficult, by almost every measure, except for the favored elite.

I am assuming that you have visited North Korea? What was your impression of the country?이미 북한을 방문했다고 추정해도 됩니까? 북한은 당신에게 어떤 인상을 남겼습니까?

A: I was there for three days during a visit of the New York Philharmonic in 2008. Like all westerners, I was squired around by government minders who limit-

ed what I saw and allowed me to witness staged events populated by North Koreans who had been trained to have interactions with Westerners. It was a weird and frustrating three days. I have learned much more from long conversations with defectors, and from interviews with South Korean technocrats and UN officials who travel widely and often inside DPRK.

Living in South Korea, it seems that the majority of people (between the age of 18-40) I talk to either do not care or are against unification, especially due the potential economic effect it would have. A lot of talk in the media focuses on the rocky relationship be-tween the US/North Korea, but with South Koreans interest in unification whittling away, it seems that this may become its greatest obstacle. What is your opinion on this?대한민국에 살면서 저와 대화를 가지는 대부분 사람들이 (18세-40세) 통일이 가져다 줄 경제적 영향 때문에 통일에 대해 무관심하거나 통일을 아예 반대합니다. 많은 미디어에서는 미국과 북한 간의 불안정한 관계에 대해 언급하지만 한국 내에서 통일에 대한 관심이 점점 떨어져 가고 있는 것이 오히려 제일 큰 문제가 될 수 있다고 생각합니다. 당신의 생각은 어떠합니까?

A: Time is the enemy of unification. Members of families split during the Korean War are dying. With each passing year, the cultural, economic, political and even linguistic differences between North and South Korea grow, and their citizens become strangers to each other. And the cost of paying for unification goes up for the South. But a crisis in the North, implosion of the regime, could force the South to spend the trillions of dollars necessary to bridge the chasm between the two Koreas. Very difficult to predict what will happen.

Do you think that the threat of nuclear weapon attacks from North Korea is just their way of seeking attention from the rest of the world? It has been a relatively quiet issue as of late; a hint of optimism maybe?북한의 무력 위협은 세계의 관심을 끄려는 수단에 불과하다고 생각합니까? 최근에는 조금 잠잠해진 이 이슈가 긍정적인 미래를 의미한다고 생각합니까?

A: I think the North Korean government views nuclear weapons as a key to survival. I don’t it will ever give them up, until the Kim regime collapses or is overthrown.

Now, he can see that his story (and his life) has value, raising interna-tional awareness about the camps and helping to create pressure to close them.

A: If Rodman can learn about the character and behavior of Kim Jong Un – and pass that information on to the outside world, it is beneficial. If he can help in-crease contact between Americans and North Koreans, it is good. Rodman looks and behaves strangely, but who cares?

Daegu Medical expertise attracts the world during the WEC 2013

World Energy Congress 2013 was an opportunity to promote Daegu’s leading medical technology and local medical tourism.

The Daegu Metropolitan Government ran “Medical Tour” promotional booths at EXCO lobby and outdoor exhibi-tion area during the WEC 2013. A total of 1,000 over-seas delegates from 58 countries visited the spots with 527 receiving a consultation, 357 getting medical check-ups and 27 arranging a visit to the local medical facilities.

Jeju Island is the perfect get away spot for those four-day weekends here in Korea. For Columbus Day, our family was able to find very well priced airline tickets to Jeju Island. We had many different plans for our visit and being that our youngest daughter is a complete cat fanatic, the first flyer to catch her eye was the one with a black cat on the front. Being that KimNyoung Maze was located a very short distance away from the Manjang and Gimnyeongsagul Caves, we decided to visit it along the way.

The maze itself is fairly small but don't let the size fool you, it took us a while to make it through - to be honest, we never did finish it to the end! Before we went into the maze, we visited the small store to get some water and while we were in there, we noticed an older gentleman in his office with a red kitten on the desk, two sleep-ing cats in his inbox, and another kitten running around on the floor. We purchased our tickets and took off into the maze which is shaped like the island of Jeju and is eco-friendly. In the sun - lazily stretched out towards the

entrance of the maze - was the first cat of many we saw while trying to find our way back out. The maze itself is harder than you would think, especially if you choose not to use a map. There are four ways to get to thru the maze and ring the silver bell on the tower, however only 65% make it to the bell - 5% even need to be "recued". We were part of the 35% that ended up coming back out the way we went in.....

The maze has been a staple on the island since 1987 and was designed by world famed maze designer Adrian Fisher. Inside the maze itself, over 2,200 green Leyland Cypresses form the 7 symbols of Jeju; the coastline of Jeju, a pony head, a snake, the dolmen, a ship, the yin/yang symbol, and the east/west axis of the maze, the geographical location of Jeju itself.

When we came out of the maze, my competitive nature came out - I wanted to ring that bell! But there were two cats, sunning themselves and our love of animals got the best of us. They loved to be petted and it was obvious

that they were definitely buddies. On our way out we al-lowed Kaitlyn to go in and ask if she could pet the little red kitten on the desk. That is when we met the older gentlemen we saw before and found out that he was no other than Dr. Frederic Dustin, who is the founder of the maze! He told us his story.....

After the Korean War, in 1952, he and his wife were meant to go to Taiwan to teach English. A mix up in Ja-pan send him to Korea where he taught at the university in Seoul. After a visit to Jeju, he and his wife decided to move there in 1971. He continued to teach, this time at Cheju National University, all the while falling in love with life on the island. After his wife's passing, Dr. Dustin de-cided that he wanted to live out his Golden Years on Jeju and he started work on the Maze before his retirement from the university in 1994

While the maze was started with a seedling in 1987, one rainy day, four kittens were found under the picnic table. Dr. Dustin took them in but only one survived. She was named Nabi (Korean for Butterfly) and we found out that it was Nabi who had greeted us by the entrance to the

maze. Her buddy was actually her first born son - the one cat she is still closest too of all..... All the cats at KimNyoung Maze are responsibly neutered and they wander around the maze and the property as if they own it - and guess what? They do!

Dr. Dustin told us that he considers it an honor to intro-duce more Koreans to the enjoyment that cats can bring. According to him, more and more people come to the maze to meet the cats, pet them, and feed them. It helps brings awareness and helps educate people who other-wise wouldn't think to pet a cat. The sheer enjoyment on the faces of the two small Korean children, combined with their squeaks of joy, certainly proves that Dr. Dustin is absolutely right!

In June 2013, Bryan Hylenski, Jake Preston, Jonn Jean-neret, Dan Kopperud and Gabriel Thomas of team Dedi-cated Everyman headed to India to attempt a first ascent of one of the last great unclimbed peaks in Uttarakhand. However, on June 17th, the Uttarkhand province of India was hit by the largest flash flood in nearly a millennium, taking the lives of more than 10,000 people, destroying entire villages and flattening infrastructure in the sur-rounding area. Our mountain, “Janhukot” is located in this devastated region, and all access to the area has been closed for rescues, recovery and rebuilding efforts.

2013년 6월, 데디케이드 에브리맨 원정대의 브라이언 하일렌스키, 제이크 프레스턴, 존 장느레, 댄 커퍼레드, 가브리엘 토마스는 높은 미답봉 중 우타라칸드에 있는 산봉우리를 처음으로 정복하기 위해 인도로 향했다. 하지만 6월 17일, 인도의 우타라칸드주는 거의 백년 만에 가장 큰 홍수를 겪게 되어 십만 명 이상이 죽고 마을 전체가 파괴되었으며 주변의 기반시설이 모두 사라지게 되었다. 우리가 가려 했던 산인 “잔후컷”은 이 지방에 위치해 있었으며 황폐해진 이 곳에 대한 구조활동, 복구, 재건을 위한 모든 접근이 막혔다.

Our team was forced to find another region to climb and Zanskar, Kashmir in Nothern India became our des-tination. Located a grueling 6 days overland travel from Delhi and nearly 150km from civilization sits the Hagshu Glacier, home of Himalayan giants, Hagshu , Lost Friend, Peak 6191 and Peak 6035. Lost Friend was climbed 10 years earlier and stands at the southern end of the glacier. The Dedicated Everyman team focused on com-pleting the first ascent of the three remaining peaks.

우리 팀은 등정을 하기 위해 다른 지역을 찾아야만 했고 인도 북부지방의 카슈미르에 있는 잔스카르가 목적지가 되었다. 델리로부터 6일간 힘겨운 육로 이동과 문명으로부터 약 150km 떨어진 곳에는 히말라야의 거대한 봉우리들이 가득한 학슈빙하지가 있고, 이 곳에 로스트 프렌드, 6191피크와 6035피크가 있다. 로스트 프렌드는 10년 전에 정복되었고 빙하지의 남쪽 끝자락에 위치해 있다. 에브리맨 원정대는 남은 세 개의 봉우리를 처음으로 정복하는 데에 집중했다.

The team arrived at basecamp on July 8th and despite a variety of natural obstacles, illnesses and injuries, the

team was able to set up Camp 1 on the upper reaches of the Hagshu Glacier by July 14th. On July 15th, Bryan and Jake made the first of 2 summit attempts on Peak 6191. Due to inclement weather, whiteout conditions and some additional health reasons, they were turned back only 200m from the summit.

원정대는 7월 8일 베이스캠프에 도착했고 다양한 자연의 장애물, 병과 부상에도 불구하고 7월 14일까지 학슈빙하지의 상류지역에 제 1캠프를 세울 수 있었다. 7월 15일에는 브라이언과 잭이 두 봉우리 중 첫 번째로 6191피크 등정을 시도했다. 그러나 악천후와 화이트아웃, 다른 건강상의 이유로 정상에서 겨우 200m를 남겨두고 돌아왔다.

On July 19th, the entire team attempted Peak 6035. After an enduring midnight struggle up the eastern ice slopes, with more than half the team forced to turn back, Bryan and Jonn, completed the first ascent of Peak 6035. They reached the summit at 1pm and christened the peak “Under Moonlight.” The excitement from the team’s first summit pushed them to their next objective, the southeast ridge of the famed “Hagshu.” They estab-lished camp 3 at 6200m, just below the summit fortress. The mountain towered over the glacier, and on July 25th

Bryan, Dan and Jonn made an attempt on Hagshu’s true summit at 6515m. They turned back at 6440m just below the summit, due to poor ice conditions and fast changing weather.

7월 19일, 팀 전체가 6035 피크에 도전했다. 동쪽 빙벽에서 하룻밤 동안 사투를 벌인 후에 절반 이상의 팀이 돌아갔고 브라이언과 존은 6035피크의 초등을 완수했다. 둘은 새벽 1시에 정상을 정복했고, 봉우리를 “달빛 아래서”로 명명했다. 원정대의 첫번째 등정 성공의 기쁨에 힘입어 다음 목표인 유명한 ‘학슈’ 의 동남쪽 산마루에 도전하게 되었다. 원정대는 정상의 안전지대 바로 아래인 해발 6200m에 제 3캠프를 세웠다. 산은 빙하 위로 우뚝 솟아 있었고 7월 25일에 브라이언, 댄, 존 대원은 학슈의 진짜 정상인 6515m 고지에 도전했다. 그들은 정상 바로 아래인 6440m 에서 좋지 못한 빙질과 급격한 날씨 변화로 돌아와야 했다.

This failure only motivated the team to make one last attempt on Peak 6191. On July 28th, having been turned back two weeks earlier and with food stores running critically low Bryan, Jonn and Dan broke through the corniced summit ridge and completed the first ascent of Peak 6191, reaching the summit at 11am and re-naming

it “Hana’s Men,” a name inspired by team captain, Bryan Hylenski’s own 5 year old daughter, Hana.

이 실패는 원정대가 6191피크에 대한 마지막 도전을 하도록 북돋웠다. 7월 28일, 2주나 빠른 귀환과 비축 식량이 거의 얼마 남지 않은 상황에서 브라이언, 존, 댄 대원은 정상의 산능선을 뚫고 오전 11시경에 6191피크의 초등을 이뤄내고, 원정대장인 브라이언 하일렌스키의 다섯살난 딸 하나의 이름을 따서 “하나의 남자들”이라고 명명했다.

This year’s, Dedicated Everyman, team came less than a week from being destroyed by one of the worst natural disasters in Indian history, traveled 6 days over some of the most remote mountain terrain on the planet, and overcame multiple team illnesses and injuries to achieve two first ascents in the Indian Himalaya.

The non-profit organization was founded in 2010 and has initiated a range of projects around Korea to ensure that the country's rock climbing spots are safe, well equipped and environmentally sus-tainable. Dance for Charity

The Daegu Rescue Team of Liberty in North Korea, better known as Daegu LiNK, is sponsoring a pow-er-packed Zumbathon® on Saturday, November 16th from 3:00pm-5:30pm at Babalu Dance Club in down-town Daegu. Zumba® is an exciting fitness program that blends magnetic Latin rhythms with easy-to-follow choreography, for a total-body workout that feels like a party. Offered in 185 countries, Zumba® classes offer a unique combination of fun, fitness, and friendships.

A Zumbathon® is a charity event sponsored by a li-censed Zumba® instructor to raise funds for recognized charitable organizations. Funds raised from the Zumb-athon's® W10,000 entry charge will contribute to Daegu LiNK's Power of One Campaign, the goal of which is to raise the USD $2,500 required to rescue a North Korean refugee by the end of 2013. This admission fee includes healthy snacks, bottles of water, and a raffle ticket for great prizes and gift certificates. Door prizes and re-al-fruit smoothies will add to the fun flavor and help keep dancers pumped up!

Licensed Zumba® instructors, each of whom brings a unique style to their craft, will be coming from various corners of the peninsula to kick off the exhilarating event. Local instructor Amber Buysman, who will be leading in-struction, is turning up the volume with awesome music, and encourages anyone to attend. No dance experience whatsoever is needed to enjoy the fitness party, and it is no problem to sit out for a few songs to kick back and watch one’s friends. Founded in February of this year, Daegu LiNK is a non-profit organization with dual goals of shifting the public perception of North Korea and aiding North Ko-rean refugees in safe resettlement to other nations. An official chapter of the international organization Liberty in North Korea, Daegu LiNK has sponsored documen-tary film screenings, topic-based discussion forums, and fundraising events throughout the city to further its mission of bringing an end to the Korean human rights

crisis. The organization has recently partnered with Yeungnam University and looks forward to empowering more students through future collaboration at other institutions.

On a crisp morning, another fall day begins with beau-tiful weather and like most Deagu Compass trips we start by meeting at Exit 18 at Baldwaldong. There we met up with our guide and interpreter Ha Mi Young and Yujeong Lee. Once we had everyone on the bus we started our 90 minute ride to Yeongchong and our first stop was at the wine making restaurant. Here we were led to the vineyard out back where we picked our own grapes to start the process to make wine. After squeezing the grapes we added yeast and sugar then we were given instructions on what to do later. The owner of the restaurant along with the Compass then had us do something that caught everyone off guard; we had a grape spitting contest. The winner received a $50 dinner gift certificate. Needless to say, there

were over twenty men and women competing. This was entertaining and very fun.

We had a traditional Korean BBQ pork lunch with all the sides that we all enjoyed before we went to our next stop, ATV riding. Having gone on this trip last year, the people running the event remembered me and my wife Maria. We had two hours to ride and everyone got a chance to ride several vehicles. We should have brought an extra pair of shoes and pants because going through the water leaves you kind of wet. We had a blast racing each other and riding on the back of the really big bikes.

The last stop of the day was soap making. Here we were introduced to an organic soap and make-up factory. We made soap with flowers and leaves and while it cured some of us got a chance to play dress up. We dressed as a king and queen while others dressed as husband and wife. Along with the Korean snacks and tea that was served we got a chance to buy some of the products that were sold there. I know that one person in our group spent over $100 and was very happy with what she purchased.

We made new friends and had a GREAT day. I'm looking forward to the next Compass trip. They really know how to have FUN!


Interactive Learning beyond the Classroom

On October 1, Mr. Hugh Cole, with Dr. Jimmy White, headed to the Incheon International Airport with six high school sophomores from his Advanced Place-ment (AP) Biology class at the Daegu International School (DIS). The group was bound to Subic Bay, Philippines, where they were to stay at DIS’s sister school, American International School of Subic, during the five-day trip. This AP Biology trip was a culmination of hands-on learning and interschool bonding. “This trip [was intended] to help [the students] get a feel for the importance of the natural world and to develop ways in which they can be involved in its pres-ervation,” said Mr. Cole. Abiding by the AP curriculum, the trip combined such activities as snorkeling, canoeing, and visits to the Ocean Adventure, a reserve for marine animals estab-lished by professionals and trainers, to help students learn firsthand about the ecosystem, its components,

and their networks. The learning agendas ranged from cycles of matter within our environment, population analysis to human influence on the ever-changing eco-system. “Especially in science, hands-on learning experi-ence—whether it be in the laboratory or the field—is one of the best ways to promote the academic pro-cess,” noted Mr. Cole upon the significance of this interactive academic trip. “To actually observe, with all senses, ensures more of an understanding of the world around us,” he con-tinued. During their various activities, the students were assisted by resident personnel of expertise. At the Mangrove Camp managed by Ocean Adventure, for instance, the students had the opportunity to have the indigenous Aeta people guide them. After learning about the role of the mangroves as barriers that preclude the erosion of sand and protect

the forest from potentially harmful waves triggered by storms, students were apprised of those plants in the forest that their Aeta guides used as medicine. “It was amazing how the Aeta tribe [had] adapted its lifestyle to the surrounding environment,” said Annie Chang, a student on the trip. When asked about the Mangrove Camp, she respond-ed, “The mangrove forest was full of all kinds of creatures, including monkeys and hermit crabs! I [also] learned that the [forest] provides protection to the nearby vil-lage.” On the second day of the trip, the students went snorkeling at Ocean Adventure’s reserve. They didn’t merely observe the fish, the invertebrates, and the cor-als that constituted the marine life of the Philippines Sea, however; they witnessed firsthand the influence of mankind on the environment when they heard the story of how dynamites used for fishing were destroy-ing the coral life and abrading the ocean floor. Maintaining their focus on their academic agenda, the snorkeling students gathered data on the fish popula-tion for further analysis back in school. The data sits ready to be assayed as Mr. Cole plans assignments on finding the mean and the standard deviation of the populations of various fish species. “We are [going to write] a research paper about the marine ecosystem after this … survey,” noted Sophie Seo, another student in class. “We are [currently] learning about ecosystems, com-munities, abiotic and biotic factors … so [this trip] fit with our AP curriculum,” she elaborated. Yet, this trip was more than a simply “academic” trip. DIS students and faculty members have been contin-uously forging a special connection with the school’s sister school at Subic since its establishment in No-vember, 2012. Last May, DIS third-grade students had stayed at AIS for their own five-day trip. For this trip as well, meals and residence were provided by AIS. “[It] is hoped that certain camaraderie will be estab-lished between DIS and AIS students,” chuckled Mr. Cole before he left for the trip. Tired but smiling with fond memories, the AP Biology students returned to Daegu on October 5. The trip was an eye-opening experience for many. As for Annie, her favorite part of the trip seemed to have been “swim-ming with the dolphins.” Barring all that academic significance of this trip, she could find a deeper signif-

icance of this exotic adventure: “It was a trip to the Philippines with my friends. We did everything together, including getting on the plane and shopping [for] stuff,” she reminisced. Asked if she would participate in another such trip, she smiled, “I would love to go again.”

Did you know that there is an organization for all inter-national women who live in Daegu? Maybe you have heard it mentioned.... It's called DIWA - Daegu Interna-tional Women's Association. Here is a short history...DIWA started as an organization, then known as the Korean-American Women's Club, in 1973 when the wife of the then major of Daegu and the wife of the then 19th Expeditionary Support Command (ESC) Commanding General saw a need for a way to share the different cultures that came to Daegu. They envi-sioned an organization that would welcome women from any country that come to live in Daegu and enjoy cultural interchanges between them all. That is how DIWA came to be and for your information, there are two sister organizations, BIWA in Busan and SIWA in Seoul, all with the same goals in mind, bringing us all together!DIWA held its first meeting on 20 September, 1973,

and it only had 20 original members. In May 1991, the Korean-American Women's Club changed its name to DIWA and since then it has grown to over 160 mem-bers, Korean, American, Russian and more. Our very first president still comes to all of our lunches! DIWA is a not just a social and cultural organization that en-courages friendship, support, networking, and cultural exchange between its members but it is also a chari-table organization that supports several organizations here in Daegu such as orphanages and kitchens that provide food for the needy.Last September, DIWA had its opening ceremony at the Suseong Hotel, near Suseong Lake. It is always great to see old friends after the summer break and meet the new members for this year. As always, opening remarks were made by our Korean president Ann and our American vice-president Michelle.Our first luncheon took place shortly after the Korean

holiday Chuseok, also known as Hangawi or, as we Americans say "Korean Thanksgiving", one of the two most celebrated traditional holidays together with the lunar New Year Day. Keeping in tradition with Chuseok, the Korean members of DIWA taught us how to make songpyeon - a small half-moon shaped rice cake. These cakes are stuffed with sweet fillings, such as sesame seeds and mung or red beans and are sup-posed to be steamed on a bed of pine needles. The name songpyeon stems from the use of pine needles ("song" in "songpyeon" means pine tree). We made some very interesting shapes and while the songpyeon was steaming, we enjoyed our lunch. After lunch there was an opportunity to meet and greet our new members and we all voted on the table that made the best shaped songpyeon. Our table did not win but we all had a wonderful time learning how to make this traditional food - and we got to take some home to share with our families.Before the luncheon ended, some of the ladies dressed up in Chuseokbim (Chuseok dress, also known as Hanbok). Bim means "to adorn oneself with new clothes for holidays or parties". Then we all joined hands and danced Ganggangsullae, a Korean circle dance. Traditionally this dance is done on the night that

the full harvest moon appears on Chuseok and one sings a song. Us Americans were barely able to keep up with the chorus, but we did our best. There is a story that tells us this dance dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) when the Korean Army dressed young women of the village in military uniforms and had them circle the mountains to make it appear to the enemy that the Korean military was greater in number than it actually was. We were told that the Korean Army enjoyed many victories thanks in part to this scare tac-tic. How genius!

DIWA meets every fourth Thursday from September through May at 10:30 am at various luncheon venues around Daegu. They offer members a number of class-es such as making flower arranging, Korean, English, knitting, and oil painting. DIWA organizes cultural trips and events in and around Deagu. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts.
