When it comes to myths about sleep, this one refuses to nod off -- and stay asleep. Contrary to popular opinion, older people don't need less sleep than the average per-son. In fact, adults require about the same amount of sleep from their 20s into old age, although the number of hours per night varies from person to person. But many older adults get much less sleep than they need, for a variety of reasons.
Take Harry Gaertner, a 68-year-old retiree from Richard-son, Texas. He remembers first being extremely tired and having difficulty sleeping six years ago. "I had to have 10 hours of sleep and an hour nap every day," he recalls. Gaertner's wife also noticed he was snoring heavily. A trip to the doctor resulted in a sleep apnea diagnosis and a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. But Gaertner says, "the machine didn't work, so that meant something else was wrong."
A trip to the ER revealed what that something else was: Gaertner needed a pacemaker to correct his heart rhythm. He now has a guaranteed pulse of 60 beats per minute, which helps him sleep and breathe easier. But Gaertner's heart issues were only partially to blame for his restless nights. He still suffered from sleep apnea, so he resumed use of the CPAP machine and now dozes more comfortably than he has in years.
Sleep deprivation and seniors
Many older sleepers have sleep deprivation that is just as debilitating, if not as complex, as Gaertner's. "Insomnia is more common for seniors, partly because of health issues, partly because of the anxiety and the concerns of aging, and sometimes because of medication," says Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine at the Sleep Center at Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie, Texas. Gardner adds that the likelihood of sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome also increases with age. Frequent urination and the pain from arthritis are more common, too, and rob sleep from seniors.
Another reason for senior snooze troubles lies in a big difference between younger and older sleepers: the timing of rest. As adults age, advanced sleep phase syndrome sets in, causing the body's internal clock to adjust to earlier bed and wakeup times. But some seniors continue to stay up late, as they did in their younger years. Sleep deprivation is often the result.
Bottom line: It's important to find the root cause of sleep-less nights, especially if, as in Gaertner's case, sleep issues are masking deeper medical problems. "See your doctor if you're not getting restful sleep at night and are unable to wake up refreshed," Gardner says. "Healthy sleep is something one should expect at all ages."

Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016 @1:00 pm Tokyo Central Gardena
Go For Broke National Education has a new interpretive exhibition open to the public. The Defining Courage Experience is a hands-on and participatory learning center in the heart of Los Angeles' Little Tokyo historic district. The exhibition ex-plores the concept of courage through the lives of the young Japanese Americans of World War II, and asks modern visitors to act with similar courage in their own lives. The exhibit teaches the history of the Japanese American World War II story and its relevance to our lives today.
All grandparents are proud of their grandchildren and love to share about them with
others, but one of Nikkei Senior Garden’s newest residents, Doug Doi, has some-
thing to be really proud of. His granddaughter, Emi, was one of 7 finalists to be
chosen out of a field of 1,000 applicants for the 2017 Tournament of Roses Queen.
Congratulations to Emi Powers and proud grandpa, Doug Doi.
Rose Princess Lauren “Emi” Emiko Powers,17, is a senior at Arcadia High
School and lives in Arcadia. She is part of Arcadia High School’s Apache News, and
Speech and Debate. Her volunteer work includes Arcadia Assissteens, Girl Scouts,
Methodist Hospital’s ICU and her church youth group. She enjoys taiko drums, bike
riding, traveling, baking, and making those around her laugh. She would like to at-
tend Syracuse University and plans on majoring in broadcast journalism with a minor
in public relations. Emi is the daughter of Fred and Candice Powers; she has two
brothers: Jonathan and Michael. (taken from Rafu Shimpo)

Honoring and Remembering Our Veterans
Dear NSG Families and Friends,
Nikkei Senior Gardens is planning a Veteran’s Honor Wall to honor, remember and celebrate our NSG veterans. An
area has been designated where residents and their families can view pictures, stories and memorabilia of our vet-
eran’s service to their country. We are asking for your help in gathering pictures, information and memorabilia to
be used as part of our honor wall. We want to honor, not only current Nikkei Senior Garden residents, but also those
who are no longer with us and any members of our residents’ families that have served our country in military service.
Please share this with others connected to Nikkei Senior Gardens so they can have the opportunity to be a part of this.
Thank you!
Please contact Patti Kimura, Director of Life Enrichment, to be a part of Nikkei Senior Gardens’ Veteran’s Honor Wall.

SUPER FOOD OF THE MONTH
Did you know?... “Buy Nothing Day” is the day after Thanksgiving in the USA and is
observed as a holiday “AGAINST” Black Friday.
November comes from the Latin word nine and is the ninth month in the Roman calendar.
A commonyns is a group of words that have a common trait. For example: A car, a tree, an elephant—they all have trunks. Try finding the common trait in the group of words below.
For the answers, see page 12.

Puzzle:
Since the feudal period in Japan, a square wooden
box called masu was used for volume measure-
ments. Originally, the size of masu varied from one
region to another, but the famous warlord, Oda
Nobunaga, standardized them. The base unit for
volume became 180 ml masu.
Today, masu is used almost exclusively for drinking
sake, and traditionally is made of hinoki wood
(Japanese Cypress). It is said that the hinoki wood
gives sake a special, fresh fragrance.
