NON-PERMISSIVE EXTERIOR INSULATION AND FINISH SYSTEMS CONCEPT

    TECHNOLOGY AND DETAILS

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates to a new concept of the permissive exterior insulation and finish

systems to transform these systems in to a non!permissive to water air and vapor exterior

    insulation and finish system"

    #$%&'(O)ND OF THE INVENTION

Exterior Insulation and Finish *ystems +EIF*, are well -nown in the art" *uch systems

typically consist of a layer of su.strate such as plywood oriented!strand .oard O*# /ypsum

sheathin/ etc an insulation layer such expanded polystyrene mesh em.edded in a coat of

polymer modified cement and polymeric finish" Ori/inally EIF* was an exterior wall concept

desi/ned to have hi/h insulation values and a relia.le stucco finish that could .e economically

created in a wide array of textures and colors" 'enerally these systems include an exterior

wall havin/ an expanded polystyrene foam insulation .oard E0* attached via an adhesive or

mechanical fasteners to the su.strate" The exterior of the insulation after all details specified

.y architect such moldin/s .ands structural or aesthetical 1oints are created is covered with a

dura.le water resistant .asecoat which receives a fi.er/lass mesh as reinforcement" $ dura.le

finish coat typically usin/ an acrylic co!polymer technolo/y is then applied" The finish coat

is /enerally .oat color fast and crac- resistant"

EIF* which is a type of claddin/ for exterior .uildin/ walls is defined per $*T2 E345!

65# as a7 non!loadin/ outdoor wall finish system consistin/ of a thermal insulation .oard an

attachment system a reinforced .asecoat exterior 1oint sealant and a compati.le finish"

8hile such EIF* have proved to .e 9uite satisfactory for easy of installation insulatin/

properties and a.ility to receive a variety of aesthetically pleasin/ finishes a serious and

vexin/ pro.lem associated with EIF* construction exists" This pro.lem is one of water

accumulation .ehind the exterior wall coverin/" *uch water it:s considerate to .e the result of

condensation and wind!driven water that may enter .ehind the exterior wall coverin/ at any

point where the exterior surface of the coatin/ is penetrated" 2oisture is driven throu/h the

porosity of exterior polymer cement and finish coat surface and throu/h air!permea.le

insulation +E0*, .y the difference pressure of cold air and hot air" The air!permea.le

insulation is exposed to permit air to flow into and out of the insulation layer to e9uali;e the

pressure of exterior environment and inside cavity of wall" This flux of air will drive moisture

into the system" 8ind!driven water that may enter .ehind the exterior wall coverin/ may .e

the result of poor wor-manship or desi/n deterioration of flashin/ or sealants over time lesser

9uality doors and windows or any other penetration or compromise of the exterior finish"

Once inside the sealed wall and .ehind claddin/ the water can remain trapped lon/

enou/h .efore evaporatin/ to dama/e or rot any water sensitive elements to which the

insulation is .onded includin/ framin/ structure" This water is -nown in the art as intrudin/

    or incidental water"

To eliminate those inconveniences EIF* industry creates draina.le systems" Draina/e is

accomplished .y means of channels formed .y vertical ri..ons of adhesive applied to the .ac-

of the insulation .oards or channeled E0* .oards to form channels for incidental moisture to

escape" The moisture and intrudin/ water travels .etween the ri..ons to the .ottom

termination of the system where it escapes throu/h weep holes of the draina/e vented trac-"

This system is installed over a water and moisture resistive .arrier"

Draina.le systems have difficulties when needs to drain water amon/ windows and when

vertical wall end whit ceilin/ or .eam" *offits have no solutions to drain condensation water"

In addition the moist environment is a .reedin/ /round for wood consumin/ insects and

health ha;ards such as various varieties of molds" $ttempts have .een made to prevent entry

of moisture into the .uildin/ wall interior .y sealin/ or caul-in/ entry points in and around

wall components as the primary defense a/ainst moisture intrusion or .y installin/ flashin/

around the wall components to divert the moisture" These attempts have not .een completely

successful" *ealants are not only difficult to properly install .ut tend to deteriorate and

separate from the wall components due to climatic conditions .uildin/ movement the surface

type or chemical reactions" Flashin/ is also difficult to install and may tend to hold the

moisture a/ainst the wall component" Flashin/s are thermal .rid/es from outside temperatures

and sources of airflow into the wall cavity" These materials are of no value in addressin/ the

pro.lem of moisture that has already entered a .uildin/ wall cavity or moisture that penetrate

the permea.le E0* .oard and condensate on the moisture .arrier surface"

The superior ener/y efficiency and desi/n flexi.ility of EIF* have resulted in /rowin/

popularity .ut the presence of moisture remains a vexin/ pro.lem" Thus there is a /reat need

for a system and method to prevent and stop moisture to penetrate the insulation layer and

intersections of EIF* whit other elements"

For that we have to fully understand the phenomenolo/y of interior and exterior

environment difference such temperature relative humidity and pressure the conditions of

condensation and physical properties of materials such permea.ility permissively thermal

    conducti.ility and otters"

That part of any .uildin/ that physically separates the exterior environment from the

interior environment is called the .uildin/ enclosure or .uildin/ envelope" $lso the .uildin/

enclosure may contain .ut is not the same as the so!called thermal envelope term that is used

to refer to the thermal insulation within the enclosure" The overall enclosure is made up of all

the conti/uous enclosure su.!assem.lies" Further dawn N0!EIF* is considered the thermal

    envelope of the enclosure"

    #uildin/ assem.lies need to .e protected from wettin/ via rainwater /roundwater air

transported water and vapor diffusion" The typical strate/ies use draina/e planes on air

.arriers air pressure control installed .etween insulation system and exterior wall assem.ly

indifferent of climate location and season" 2oisture usually moves from warm to cold driven

.y the thermal /radient +vapor pressure differential, and from more to less driven .y the

concentration /radient" In cold climates moisture from the interior flows towards the exterior

.y passin/ throu/h .uildin/ enclosure in hot climates moisture from the exterior flows

towards the cooled interior .y passin/ throu/h the .uildin/ envelope" #y climates and seasons

we can have two extreme situations from the exterior environment7 very cold and dry and hot!

hummed with same inside conditioned space limited to 3=> relative humidity at ?@AF

    + (elative Humidity, and

    exterior +!CAF Temperature 4=> (H," $.solute humidity +water vapor concentration, is the

reach the moisture .arrier" In cold and very cold climates condensation on interior surfaces

occurs durin/ the heatin/ season .ecause the interior surfaces of exterior walls are cool from

heat loss" #ecause on this situation EIF* is placed on the cold side of .uildin/ the wall

assem.ly is warm includin/ vapor retardant material of moisture .arrier" This will e9uili.rate

temperatures air pressure and relative humidity from inside conditioned environment and wall

accordance with local climate the only reason of condensation it:s the thermal .rid/es around

windows doors flashin/s and other outside penetrations" 0ractically any material with hi/h

In hot!humid climates and seasons moisture from the exterior flows towards the cooled
