Sel-Plex 64 Field trials w ith a selenium yeast supplement (Sel-Plex™, Alltech Biotechnology Inc., Nicholasville, KY) w ere conducted during 2003 and 2004 in14 commercial dairy herds. Days in milk (DIM), milk production, and composition w ere collected from dow nloaded Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI)test records. Fat-corrected (FCM) and energy-corrected milk (ECM) w ere calculated from milk yield and composition measurements. The datasetincluded 1444 cow s w ith tw o consecutive DHI tests and initial DIM>30. After the first monthly DHI test, Sel-Plex w as included in the diet to provide0.3 ppm added Se (DM basis) and replaced inorganic selenium. Cow s w ere fed Sel-Plex, on average, for 20 d before the second monthly DHI test.No adjustments w ere made for change in DIM (191 days for initial test month and 226 days for the second month). A tw o-stage analysis w asused. The first stage evaluated individual herd responses and the second stage evaluated the overall response from variation among herds.Cow s averaged 33.6 and 33.3 kg milk per d during the pre-Sel-Plex and Sel- Plex test month, respectively. Milk yield and composition w ere similar
64 betw een the tw o test months. Actual somatic cell count (SCC) w as low er on the Sel-Plex test month (252,653 vs. 213,173 cells/ml; P<0.10).Somatic cell count expressed on the linear score scale w as also low er after Sel-Plex supplementation (4.34 vs. 4.09; P<0.10). Replacing inorganicSe w ith organic Se from Sel-Plex did not affect milk production and reduced SCC in commercial dairy herds.

Ruchamax, Minovit-Forte
203 In present study an experiment (CRD) w as conducted on eighteen Hampshire piglets ( 10 to 12 w eeks age) to investigate the effect of Minovit -Forte and Ruchamax feeding on grow th. The three grpops w ith equal number of replications w ere randomly alloted to one of the treatments; Viz. ,Ruchamax feeding @ 0.2% (T1) MinovitForte feeding @ 0.2% (T2) and control group (T3). The analysis of variance revealed a highly signif icant(P<0.01) effect of Ruchamax and Minovit-Forte on grow th of pigs under study. The overall average daily w eight gain of pigs w as calculated as;331.25+5.31 ; 301.24 + 4.20 and 280.30 +3.78 gm, respectively for T3 , (429.18g/d) w as recorded in the first group (Ruchamax fed @ 0.2%). Theeconomics of raising pigs for T1 w as also found to ne the low est ( Rs. 39.25/Kg body w eight gain) among all the three groups under study. Basedon these observations, it may be concluded that Ruchamax can be fed to Hampshire pigs for higher grow th rate by the piggery farmers.
Ruchamax 202 A farmers field study w as conducted under their system of management and feeding schedule as w ell as at pig research farm. Ruchamax w asadded @ 15gm/17.5Kg of the pig ration. The grow th rate obtained at the institute and farmers field as 33.25gm/day and 305.00gm/day respectivelyleading to attainment of 30Kg b.w t. at 6 month as compared to 17Kg in the existing pig population w ithout any treatment.

205 Previous reports show that addition of botanicals to nursery diets may signif icantly reduce feed intake interfering w ith the assessment of potentialbenefits in piglets. A four-w eek trial w as carried out at the Schothorst Feed Research, to study the effect on pig performance and fecalconsistency after w eaning of three botanicals (internal reference number [Ref] 44 w ith 3% capsicum, Ref 45 3% capsicum & 50% chicoryextract, and Ref 46 50% chicory extract) dosed at 0.1, 0.2 & 0.4% for Ref 44 and 45, and 0.1 & 0.2% for Ref 46. Except for the negative control(T1) diet, a cherry-honey flavor w as applied to all diets aimed at masking the botanicals (T3 through T10) or flavoring the control (T2). In total 300piglets (26 d of age) w ere blocked by w eaning eight (avg. 8 kg) and offspring and randomly allocated to treatments. Piglets received Phase 1 (0-14 d) and Phase 2 (15-28 d) grow th promoters & acidif ier-free diets. Compared to control T1 application of f lavor alone (T2) numerically (P> 0.05)increased feed intake (5%) and daily gain (6%) in the four-w eek period. The flavor seemed to prevent depression of feed intake normally
205 associated w ith botanical additives except for the highest inclusion of Ref 45 (T8) particularly w hen compared to the positive control T2 (12%decrease; P<0.05). Inclusion of botanicals Ref 44 and 46 did not have signif icant effects compared to control T1 and tended to perform w orsethan piglets on the flavored control T2. Feed conversion ratio and fecal consistency w ere not affected by treatments. It is concluded that, overall, compared to a negative control, the three botanical additives tested did not improve gut health or performance of w eanling pigs. The reduction onfeed intake observed in previous w orks w as largely avoided presumably due to a compensatory effect of the addition of the flavor. Treatmentw ith a f lavor alone tended to improve feed intake and daily gain.

Crina 214 Alternative feed additives have been studied and the use of plant secondary compounds is a promising option. A blend of essential oil components(CRINA Ruminant, CRINA S.A., Sw itzerland) w as fed to lactating cow s to study its effect on intake and milk production. Cow s w ere fed a TMR of15% alfalfa silage, 10% alfalfa hay, 25% corn silage, and 50% concentrate (DM basis). For a 2-w k pretreatment period all cow s w ere fed 50 g ofa limestone/CRINA blend that w as mixed into the TMR to provide a daily intake of 0.6 g of CRINA/cow /d. At the start of an 8 w k treatment periodcow s w ere blocked on lactation number, pretreatment milk production and days in milk, and randomly allocated to one of tw o treatments: 1) 100 gof limestone or 2) 100 g of limestone/CRINA (1.2 g CRINA/cow /d). Cow s fed CRINA ate 4.2 lb more DM/d and produced 5.9 more lb of 3.5% FCM/dthan did cow s fed the control diet (P < 0.05). Milk composition w as unaffected by treatment. CRINA w as also added to chopped corn forage (30%DM) to evaluate its effect on silage fermentation and aerobic stability. Treatments w ere: 1) no additive, 2) 2.5 g of CRINA/25 kg of w et forage,
214 3) 5.0 g CRINA/25 kg of w et forage, or 4) a buffered propionic acid based product, 4 lb/ton of w et forage (Kemin Industries, West Des Moines,Iow a). After ensiling, addition of CRINA had no effect on silage fermentation or the aerobic stability of corn silage. As expected, addition of thebuffered propionic acid based product increased the concentration of propionic acid (P < 0.05) and decreased the yeasts in silage(4.45 vs. 5.16log cfu/g, P < 0.05) but only numerically improved aerobic stability (47.5 vs. 59.5h) w hen compared to untreated silage. The findings of this studyshow that CRINA w as unable to affect silage fermentation or aerobic stability but it increased DM intake and milk production in dairy cow s.

Natustat 226 The performance of both turkeys and chickens in the tw o experiments suggests that Natustat™ may play an important role as a dietarysupplement in poultry susceptible to histomoniasis. This is supported by the cecal and liver lesion scores in both species, w hich w ere generallynot different betw een Natustat™ and Histostat®- supplemented birds. In addition, feed efficiency values of broilers and turkeys receivingNatustat™ w ere less affected by the histomoniasis challenge than those receiving Histostat®. Data from both experiments show ed that H.meleagridis-challenged birds fed Natustat™ performed similar to (or intermediate to, depending on parameter) non-challenged, non-supplementedbirds and challenged birds supplemented w ith Histostat®.

233 Tw o experiments w ere conducted to investigate the effect of herbal extracts (including Solanum xanthocarpum, Hedychium spicatum, Curcumalonga, Piper longum and Ocimum sanctum) on the grow th performance and blood composition in pigs. A total of 96 nursery pigs w ere randomlyallocated into four treatments w ith six replications for four w eeks (initial average BW 27.6 ± 2.63 kg). Dietary treatments included: 1) Con (Control),2) AB (Control + 0.1% Antibiotics), 3) AM (Control + 0.1% Animon) and 4) ABAM(Control + 0.1% Antibiotics + 0.1% Animon). For the overall period,ABAM (562 g) treatment increased ADG compared to CON (500 g) and AB (506 g) treatments (P<0.05). The difference of IgG concentration w asincreased in pigs fed AM and ABAM diets compared to pigs fed AB diet (P<0.05). Pigs fed ABAM (3.5 g/dL) diet had higher albumin concentrationthan pigs fed CON (2.9 g/dL) and AB (3.0 g/dL) diets (P<0.05). Lymphocyte concentration difference of AB and ABAM diets had increased by9.51% compared to CON and AM diets (P<0.05). The digestibility of dry matter in ABAM treatment w as increased by 5.3% compared to that of AB
233 and AM treatments (P<0.05). How ever, no differences w ere found for total protein of serum and N digestibility of feces (P>0.05). In Exp. 2, a totalof 75 grow ing pigs w ere randomly allocated to three treatments w ith five replications for 29 days (initial average BW 40.22 ± 2.82 kg). Dietarytreatments included 1) CON (Control), 2) AM1 (Control + 0.1% Animon) and 3) AM2 (Control + 0.2% Animon). For the total experiment, the pigs fedAM1 (887 g) and AM2 (894 g) diets had greater ADG than pigs fed CON (831 g) diet. The AM1 diet increased ADFI compared to the CON diet. Inserum characteristics, difference of IgG concentration of AM1 and AM2 treatments w ere greater than those of CON treatment (P<0.05).Lymphocyte w as greatest for AM1 and low est for CON, w ith AM2 intermediate (P<0.05). In conclusion, herbal extracts w ere effective in grow thperformance, IgG, albumin, total protein and lymphocyte responses in pigs.

241 One hundred and tw enty 21-d-w eaned pigs w ere used to compare five treatments w ith 12 replications (pens of tw o pigs each) per treatment in a35-d randomized complete block design experiment. Treatments consisted of: control - basal diet of corn, soybean meal, dried w hey, lactose anddried plasma; antimicrobial - basal diet plus antimicrobials (Zn bacitracin and olaquindox, 50 ppm of each); probiotic - basal diet plus 1300 ppmprobiotic (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis); prebiotic - basal diet plus 3000 ppm mannanoligosaccharide; herbal extract - basal diet plus500 ppm herbal extracts (garlic, clove, cinnamon, pepper and thyme). Antimicrobial agents improved (P<.05) ADG during d 1-35 (+21.4%) and d 15-35 (+22%) post-w eaning compared to pigs fed the control diet. Although not signif icant (P>.10), ADG of pigs fed mannanoligosaccharide w as25.7% higher than those fed control diet during 1-14 days post-w eaning period. Performance of pigs fed mannanoligosaccharide w asintermediary betw een that of pigs fed the control and antimicrobial diets during d 15-35 and d 1-35 post-w eaning. The herbal extracts did not
