The work and witness of the Church in the diocese, in vale and valley, in city and suburb, in town and village, is part of the unceasing worship offered by the wider Church of Almighty God.

In our diocese, the mother church, Llandaff Cathedral remembers the parishes, clergy, committees, specialist ministries and the people each day at the Eucharist. The diocese is asked to pray for the work of the Cathedral in its servant role and especially on those days in which your parish is remembered at the Cathedral.

The titles of the Sundays and other days are from the Church in Wales Lectionary for 2020/ 2021 Year B, Weekdays Year 1.

The daily intentions of the Anglican Cycle of Prayer are included as is, at the request of Bishop June, the Porvoo Prayer Diary. These appear at the beginning of each week.

THE PORVOO DECLARATION commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses.

The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year.

Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week.

In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement.

A PRAYER FOR THE DIOCESE

Father, you gave us Jesus Christ your son to be both Lord and Saviour. By the power of your Spirit, renew your Church in this Diocese of Llandaff, and help us to bring the Good News of Salvation to all your people.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

GWEDDI DROS YR ESGOBAETH

Dad, a roddaist i ni Iesu Grist dy fab yn Arglwydd ac yn Iachawdwr.Trwy rym dy Ysbryd, adnewydda dy Eglwys yn Esgobaeth Llandaf, a chynorthwya ni i ddwyn Newyddion Da Iachawdwriaeth i’th holl bobl.

Gofynnwn hyn yn enw Iesu Grist ein Harglwydd. Amen.

Gracious God, we give you thanks for the gift of this world-wide Anglican Communion of churches: for our sense of belong to all the ages, for the gift of thoughtful prayer you have taught us, and for the task of reverent study to which you call us. We thank you for the love of worship and have stirred up in our hearts, and for the love of justice you have implanted in our wills. Be with us in times of trouble as in times of joy; give us thankful hearts when we stand together, and send your holy Wisdom into all our disagreements. In dispute, may we be gentle and loving; in unity may be humble; in poverty, give us hope; in wealth make us responsible and generous. Inflame us with prophetic vision so our fellowship will be the likeness of your kingdom of righteousness, proclaimed for all by Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen

WARNING: God at work – be patient!

Be patient with yourself, all you can do is open yourself

to the activity of God….Create a hopeful spaceand let God work not his magicbut let his free-flowing gracework deep within you.

Faith and hope walk hand in hand;‘For faith is the substanceOf things hoped for’.When faith and hope find a home in youthey clasp hands and give birth to love.

The gift of faith is born out of the recognitionof God’s enduring faithfulness to you.He never turfs you out of his heart, however carelessly you neglect or try to use him, however cruelly you turn your back on him.

This work of God can seem slow, hence the call for patience, remember it is not Godwho is dragging his feet, but the heavy barriers you erectto keep him out of parts of your life. You have much to say to Godand quite a lot to complain about himbut little time for listening to him.

You need to learn to forgive the past,to move on in faith. To see how God was at workin the downs as well as the ups,and even in the dull routines.

Page 6: O God, you are the Pastor and Ruler of your holy church ... · Web view“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” JANUARY. TO . MARCH

You need the winter of the pastto awaken you to the spring of your future.

Spiritual progress can be a delusion.Growth in the Spirit comes not by expandingbut by dying and rising with Christ. You cannot have certainty about any vital decision –you can only live by faith,by opening yourself as much as possibleto the curious workings of the Spirit. So instead of dwelling only on your faults –and seeming lack of progress, seek to recognise and rejoice in the fruits of the Spiritin yourself and in others:‘Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,Goodness, faith, gentleness and self control’.Give thanks for these fruits and work with themPatiently ………

A reflection based on some of the words shared by David Foster OSB in ‘Touched by God-Ten Monastic Journeys.

PRAYING FOR OUR NEW RELATIONSHIP in OUR MINISTRY AREAS Lord of all life, send your Spirit to guide and inspire us to discover the good side of growing closer together. Help us to see a way through the difficult aspects and as ever, know we are not alone. May we have the humility to learn from those more established, so that we can truly work together for a way forward that will help and not hinder our churches to reach out into the communities we serve. May we both continue to nurture the people you have given us and embrace those who do not yet share the Gospel of life. To you be praise and glory in all we undertake in your name, the cornerstone upon which we are all called to build: Christ our Lord AMEN

Fr. Colin Sutton

THE HOMELESS & NEEDY

O Lord, who rescues the poor from need, and restores the lonely to a home: look in mercy on all who suffer the lack of livelihood and, like you O Lord have nowhere to lay their head. And as you have assured those that do good to others that, inasmuch as they do it to your brethren, they do it unto you, let your pity and compassion move us to house the homeless and to lighten the burdens of the needy and distressed. Guide we pray, those that govern the nations, that your people may be set free from want and fear, and that in you all the families of the earth may be blessed. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

O merciful, God who knows the needs of your Church and people strengthen their faith and resolve during time of vacancy. We pray that provision may be made for them to receive spiritual feeding and that your sacraments are avaiable to them ; we ask this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

INCREASE OF THE SACRED MINISTRY

O Lord, we pray that more men and women be guided by your Spirit to seek ordination to your Sacred Ministry. Guide those who feel called to seek advice. May we Lord, encourage those who feel called to serve you as Deacon and Priest and also those who are called to ministry as Reader. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

O God, the Creator and Preserver of all, we pray for people of every race and in every kind of need: make your ways known on earth, your saving power among all nations

We pray for your church throughout the world and for June our Bishop: guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that all Christian people may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace and in righteousness of life.

We commend to your fatherly goodness all who are anxious or distressed, in mind, body or spirit; comfort and relieve them in their need; give them patience in their sufferings, and bring good out of their troubles.

We entrust to your gracious keeping all who have died in the faith of Christ, and we give you praise for all your faithful ones with whom we rejoice in the communion of saints.

All this we ask for Jess Christ’s sake. Amen.© The Representative body of The Church in Wales

Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us to love our neighbour, and to care for those in need as if we were caring for you. In this time of anxiety, give us strength to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick, and to assure the isolated of our love, and your love, for your name’s sake. Amen.

God of compassion, be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation. In their loneliness, be their consolation; in their anxiety, be their hope; in their darkness, be their light; through him who suffered alone on the cross, but reigns with you in glory, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those who are ill. Merciful God, we entrust to your tender care those who are ill or in pain, knowing that whenever danger threatens your everlasting arms are there to hold them safe. Comfort and heal them, and restore them to health and strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For hospital staff and medical researchers. Gracious God, give skill, sympathy and resilience to all who are caring for the sick, and your wisdom to those searching for a cure. Strengthen them with your Spirit, that through their work many will be restored to health; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

From one who is ill or isolated. O God, help me to trust you, help me to know that you are with me, help me to believe that nothing can separate me from your love revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Submitted by Fr. Colin SuttonPutting the Song into Action

Luke starts the portrait of Mary and revisits it a few times, and then leaves us to mark its earthly conclusion. Our role is surely to stand with Elizabeth and witness her double blessing: Of all women you are most blest and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Mary may be full of grace but she does question how can this be. The answer she received offered no explanation or justification, but a deep expression of God’s wondrous, unpredictable action. Action both beyond Mary’s and our comprehension. She let God’s spirit take hold of her so that the Son of God could take flesh in her and so dwell among us. Mary does not allow her fear to form her response. God announces through his messenger his free choice of Mary and she in turn announces her free choice of God. The two choices meet and there is fulfilment- the start of Heaven and earth uniting in the Saviour.

Jesus would eventually say that the true disciple is the one who hears the word of God and keeps it: so in a way she is the first disciple to respond to God’s final plan of Salvation.

In Mary’s Magnificat we see Mary the radical prophet proclaiming the challenging word of God, hungering for justice, and lifting up the despised and neglected. Above all, Mary sings forth that the those who hold the

power based on greed and manipulation will not ultimately win the day. Her true joy is to welcome the poor in heart. How easy is it to sing the song but to seek neutrality, to seek a quiet life for ourselves and our children. But Mary’s Magnificat will have none of it! It’s not a hymn for escapists or idealists, but a mission statement for the poor and down trodden and those who suffer under unjust governments that are based on corruption. No wonder totalitarian regimes have sought to ban her hymn. Christ in the company of Mary and the saints will surely continue the work. So Mary’s crown today is not of gold but is reflected in the lifting up of the humble and powerless before Christ the Saviour her Son.

Will we join her, not just to sing her hymn, but live its meaning in our own imbalanced and fraught world?

From Fr. Colin Sutton the Diocesan Promoter of Retreats:

LLANGASTY RETREAT HOUSE is a Christian centre, and a place for individuals and groups to develop their spirituality by means of retreats, conferences and study groups.

A place of Christian Worship and Prayer, set in surroundings of peace, beauty and tranquility, with wildlife in abundance that never fails to catch the retreatants attention. Llangasty Retreat House has been used as a place of retreat by Church groups, The Mothers Union and study groups to name but a few, for over 50 years.

Llangasty Retreat House is used by Christian organizations such as, Creative Arts Retreat Movement with their Painting and Prayer retreats and the Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer. Llangasty Retreat House is also an ideal place for the individual to get away from the stresses and strains of modern-day life, the views from the lounge window entice you to sit, relax and marvel at God's creation.
