Are you expecting but stillundecided on a name?
Some experts predict babynames for 2011 signal a new, lighter feel and more optimisticoutlook.
Some trends to consider:• Proper names that can be
morphed.Proper names such as Louise,
Arthur, Beatrix and Abraham canbe nicknames.
Parents get two very differentnames for the price of one, whichcan be an advantage to children asthey grow up too: Lulu by nightcan be Louise by day.
Some names without obviousnicknames now are beingshortened: Caleb becomes Cub,Alistair becomes Ace and so on.
• Pick the nickname first.Another route is to choose the
nickname, then find a formalname to go with it. Josie really isJosephine, Zee is Zachary.
• Make a switch.Experts are seeing more
traditional dog names being usedfor babies, and vice versa. Busterand Buddy might occupy the cribin the next room, while Chloe orZoe might be in the doghousesome nights.
• Ha!Lots of names beginning with
“ha” are predicted: Hayden,Harry, Hazel, Harrison, Harper,Hadley, Hank, Haven, Hal, Hart,Harriet, Hattie, Hale, Harley,Hartley, Harlow.
• It’s all about “us.”The Latin “us” for boys is
increasingly popular: Atticus,Aurelius, Augustus, Cassius,Maximus, Amadeus. Other stylishs-ending names: Rufus, Amos,Miles.
• About time. Some people are choosing
month names such as January andMay, holiday and seasonal namessuch as Winter and Easter and dayor time of day names, such asSunday and Midnight, are beingused.
• Think old.Stanley is a new entry to the
British Top 100. Other old-timeynames up for reconsideration:Ernest, Harvey, Arthur, Walter,Warren.
• Switching genders. Some names are truly
androgynous: Paxton, Peyton,Sawyer, Sasha. Parents are nolonger backing off from using aname for boys once it becomes
popular for girls.• Flower power. The freshest flower name is
Azalea. Other exotic blossomnames are Dahlia, Poppy, Lotus,Lilac, Acacia, Marigold andCamellia.
Lily, Rose and Daisy appear tobe losing their bloom.
• Arrr!A popular beginning for names
is R, not as in old-school Robert,Richard and Rhoda, but as in suchrich and robust newcomers asRufus, Rupert, Ray, Rosamund,Raphael, Roman, Romy, Romilly,
Remy, Rory, Reed, Rhys, Rowan,Ronan, Reeve, Ripley, Roscoe,Reuben and Ruby.
• It’s all about the O.O has come into its own as a
beginning — Oliver, Olivia, Oscar,Owen, Orson, Olive, Oliympia,Octavia and Ophelia – and anending — Milo. Otto and Orlandohave it coming and going.
• Space, the final frontier.Parents also are finding
inspiration from above withnames inspired by the objects andcreatures of the heavens. Theyinclude planet names such as
Mars and Jupiter, star names suchas Orion, angel names fromSeraphina to Gabriel, and othercelestial names such as Stella andLuna.
• Team Edward vs. TeamJacob.
Yes, “Twilight” names havebeen hot, but are starting to fade. There may not be as many babiesnamed Bella, Edward, Cullen,Emmett, Jasper, Esme and Felix.

Any parent who’s sat upthrough the night with a sick childknows relieving their symptoms isonly part of your mission.
Easing the discomforts of coldand flu for your little one is a No. 1priority.
“Watching your child suffer, even if it’s from something asminor as a nose that’s sore andchapped from repeated blowing, isa terrible feeling for any parent,”mother and pediatrician Dr. TanyaRemer Altman said. “Relieving thediscomforts related to cold and flunot only helps kids feel better, italso reduces stresses for theirparents.”
“Dr. Tanya,” as she’s known toher patients and those who’ve seenher on “The Today Show” or whofollow her blog, offers some tips tohelp parents make children feelmore comfortable while fighting acold or the flu:
• Flu vaccines arerecommended for everyone 6months and older, but it’s notunusual for children to fear a shot.
Ask your pediatrician aboutgiving your child the flu vaccine ina nasal spray form.
It’s available for children 2 andolder, and provides the sameprotection and safety as thetraditional flu shot.
• Your mother probably sworeby chicken soup and she was on tosomething.
Serving sick children chickensoup not only gives them thebenefit of nourishment while theirbodies are fighting a virus, studiesshow chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties as well.Plus, it’s a popular comfort foodthat most kids love.
• Sore, chapped noses add tothe discomfort of having a cold.
Tissues with added lotion canhelp prevent chapping fromfrequent nose blowing and wiping.
The strong, lotion-filled tissuescan help children get more out oftheir nose blowing, ensuringthey’re confident they can blowwithout getting anything “icky” ontheir little hands.
You can also use petroleumjelly or unscented ointment tosoothe the irritation anddiscomfort.
• Another way to help relieve astuffy nose is to try a few drops ofnasal saline and gentle suctioning.
A cool mist humidifier and aliberal application of rub onchildren older than 2 can alsohelp.
• Frequent hand-washing isimportant to prevent the spread ofviruses.
Washing your hands a lot, especially in cold weather, canleave them dry, sore and cracked.Teach your children to wash theirhands while singing “Wash, wash, wash your hands, wash them everyday.
Wash them with water andwash them with soap to wash the
germs away” to the tune of “Row,row, row your boat.”
Then follow up with a soothinglotion. You can find manyfragrance-free varieties speciallyformulated for children.
• When your child’s throat issore, he might be unwilling to eator drink much.
Offer a sugar-free fruit frozenpop instead.
The coolness can help ease asore throat, your child will getsome hydration from the frozenjuice and he’ll feel like he’s gettinga special treat.
• Make trips to the doctor’soffice fun by bringing a book ortoy to keep your child occupied, and a snack in case she getshungry.
A special reward or treat afterthe visit is also a nice tradition.
• Don’t overlook your ownmental comfort as well; call thedoctor if you feel your child’ssymptoms are worrisome.

Parents can help a sick childWatching a child
suffer, even if it’s
from a sore nose, is
terrible for a parent
By ARA Content
While today’s economycontinues to put extra stress onmost Americans’ wallets, thosepreparing to welcome a new childinto the family experience theadded pressure of a whole new setof expenses.
From diapers to baby furnitureand day care, the costs for newparents mount quickly.
For some, the reality of theseexpenses is daunting. Others arecompletely unaware of how the joyof a new child will impact theirfinancial situation.
So, just how much does a babycost? The answer depends onmany factors. Does one parentstay at home or does the family
hire a child care provider? Will the child attend public or
private school? Is there a need fora larger home or car for thegrowing clan?
Raising a child costs an averageof nearly $11,000 the first yearand more than $220,000 for thefirst 18 years, according to theU.S. Department of Agriculture.
So where do expecting and newparents start? Thrivent Financialfor Lutherans offers five “babysteps” to help them prepare.
• Start early. During yourpregnancy, take the time todetermine your family’simmediate financial needs as wellas your long-term goals.
• Create a realistic budget.Determine the true cost of what
you will need and weigh it againstthe new realities of yourhousehold income situation.
This is particularly important ifyou plan on leaving the workforcefor an extended period of time.Consult another new parent for alist of monthly baby expenses toget a clear picture of those costs.
• Start and/or increase anemergency fund. The chances ofunexpected expenses will becomemuch greater once the little onecomes on the scene.
• Get protection throughproper insurance. It’s time to faceyour own mortality andvulnerability. Protection is critical.
Consult with a financialrepresentative to insure yourhealth, property, income and life
through appropriate insurance. Inaddition, consider a juvenile lifeinsurance policy when your childis born. Also, be sure to update thebeneficiary designation on yourown policies once the baby isborn.
• Save for college. Before youknow it, your child will leave thenest, so start saving for collegenow.
A financial professional canassist with the various investment
tools available today for collegesavings.
Opening a savings account inthe child’s name is a great startingpoint for depositing monetary giftsgiven to the child.
Supporting a family is hardwork.
Having the knowledge andtools you need to help ensure yourfinancial stability will make thejourney less complicated and evenmore rewarding.

Cooking a meal should be funfor both children and adults.
By engaging your children infood preparation, you candemonstrate valuable food lessonswhile enjoying time well spentwith your family.
By including everyone in thepreparation, you can introduceyour children to how fun cookingand eating together can be.
Not only will they learn a littlebit about navigating the kitchen, but they will also discover how itcan serve as the perfect platformfor a math lesson or an art project.
Here are a few tips for makingyour family meals fun and child-friendly:
• Get your kids involved incooking preparation from an earlyage.
Your little ones will get a kickout of doing something as simpleas dumping a cup of flour into amixer and watching you useeveryday kitchen tools.
You can also use themeasurements that go into recipesas a teaching opportunity for yourchild with a built-in math lesson.
Children can also lend a handby setting the table or designingplacemats for the family meal.
• Make food fun. Keep yourkids engaged by experimentingwith different colors, shapes andsizes of foods they know.
• Create excitement fordinnertime.
A great way to make sure kidslook forward to mealtimes is toparticipate in fun activities as afamily.
Theme nights are a great wayto engage children around thedinner table.
You can prepare traditionalmeals from around the world, orcook a meal inspired by yourfamily’s favorite movie or vacationspot.

Children love to do art projects— whether they be with crayons, markers, paints or dough.
Such projects help develop finemotor skills and help childrenlearn about colors.
Besides, they’re fun.Squooshing dough through the
fingers, rolling it and cutting itinto shapes or modeling it intoanimals can be a great way tospend an afternoon.
Finger paints can be messy, butan old T-short can help keep paintoff clothing. Spread out a layer ofnewspapers to protect flooring ortabletops.
The dough and paint recipeshere are fast and easy to make, inexpensive and easy to clean up.They’re also non-toxic and, withthe exception of a couple paintrecipes, are edible, though they’renot particularly tasty.
That’s a plus, because smallchildren seem to put everything intheir mouths.
A roll of butcher paperprovides a great canvas forchildren’s artwork. It’sinexpensive, sturdy and can be cutin varying lengths.
Some parents buy or make
easels that allow paper to roll fromone side to another for acontinuous art project.
Homemade playdough
1 cup white flour1/4 cup salt2 tablespoons cream of
tartarCombine and add:1 cup cold waterFood coloring (optional)1 tablespoon cooking oilIn a medium saucepan, mix
together flour, salt and cream oftartar. A non-stick pot works best.
Combine water, a few drops offood coloring (if desired) and oil.
Add to dry ingredients andcook over medium heat, stirringconstantly, for three to fiveminutes. It will look globby.
When it forms a ball in thecenter of the pot, remove from theheat and turn it out on a slightlyfloured surface. Knead brieflyuntil smooth.
Cool and store in an airtightcontainer (a one-pint cottagecheese or margarine tub will holdit) or a zippered plastic bag.
This dough is edible, but nottasty. It keeps, unrefrigerated, for
several weeks.Be sure to provide plenty of
cookie cutters, a rolling pin, dullplastic knives, bottle caps and otheritems for cutting and shaping.
This dough cleans up well. If abit of it does dry on a surface, pickor chip off as much as possible, then remove the rest with a damprag or non-abrasive scrubber.
If it’s left uncolored, it won’tstain.
Finger paint No. 1
Mix 2 cups flour and 2teaspoons salt. Add 2 1/2 cupscold water and stir until smooth.Gradually add to 2 cups boilingwater. Boil until smooth and thick, stirring constantly. Add foodcoloring and stir until smooth.Cool.
Finger paint No. 2
Whip 1 cup soap flakes with1/2 cup water. Tint with foodcoloring.
Finger paint No. 3
Mix 3 tablespoons sugar and
1/2 cup cornstarch. Add 2 cupscold water. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickenedand well blended.
Divide, color with foodcoloring. Add a pinch of liquiddetergent to each color for cleanupease.

If one feels the need of
something grand, something
infinite, something that makes
one feel aware of God, one need
not go far to find it. I think that
I see something deeper, more
infinite, more eternal than the
ocean in the expression of the
eyes of a little baby when it
wakes in the morning and coos
or laughs because it sees the sun
shining on its cradle.
