Who is Datta’scompanion?
Karagre Vasate LakshmiKara Mule SaraswathiKara Madhye Tu GovindahPrabate Kara Darshanam
TranslationOn the tip of your fingers is Goddess Lakshmi; on the base of your fingers is Goddess Sarasvati; in the middle of your fingers is Lord Govinda. In this manner, look at your palm
Brief ExplanationThis is a Morning Prayer called “karadarshana”. One begins the day with this prayer. ‘kara” means the palm of the hand and it stands for the five organs of action.
While looking at the palm, one asks the Lord in the form of various deities, to reside in the palms so all the actions that will be done during the day will be good.
By acknowledging the Lord as the giver of the capacity to perform actions and as the giver of the fruits of those actions, one sanctifies the actions.
Thus, one prays in the morning to reinforce the attitude that all actions are performed as a service to the Lord. All human progress lies in effort.

Brhaspati cautioned, “Go to Sahyadri where Dattatreyaresides and serve him. You need unwavering devotion and steadfast faith to please him. Dattatreya is very severe in testing his disciples (students). Be careful! Do not be disgusted if he appears ugly and loathsome or engaged in despicable actions.”

Reflecting carefully on Brhaspati’s words, Indra went to Sahyadri.
At that time Dattatreyawas engaged in frivolous activities. There were singers in front of him, others were giving him pots of wine and a woman was rolling over him with little cloth covering her body. Dattatreya was highly intoxicated or drunk.
Indra and the devatas arrived and was witnessing these activities. Indra remembered his Guru’s words, “Dattatreyasubjects his disciples to severe tests.”
“Understand that he is pure like a flame and nothing can taint him. Farewell and may success be yours.”

On hearing this Lord Datta burst out laughing. He said, “It is quite obvious why you were defeated. You have poor understanding so your enemies are able to overcome you.
Indra stood there with folded hands. He and the other devatasbegan serving Dattatreya. They made the beds, set the table and arranged the meals.
Indra stood by Datta’s side and handed him anything he desired immediately. Sometimes Dattatreya would spit on his own body. At other times he would spit on Indra. Yet Indra did not flinch. He and the devatas remained there serving Dattatreya with devotion.
Indra narrated all that had happened in Heaven. Indra then humbly begged, “Please save us and grant us victory over Jambh-aasura and his forces.”
SKY :Look at the sky space it is all-pervading (exists everywhere). It is in pots, rooms, the body space etc. Yet the space in the pot etc does not unite with the space in the room etc. What other spaces do you know?
Space is immeasurable and cannot be cut or divided.
Seeing this and recognizing that the inner Self, dwells in innumerable bodies, is unattached and indivisible, I learnt to experience the Self everywhere and in everything.
There is an extraordinary thing about the Sky, clouds are formed by the elements of dust (from earth), water and fire (heat) with the help of air they move about in the sky. Yet the sky is not stained by them.
From this I learnt, that the Self is not contaminated by the qualities of the elements forming the body. This is what Sky has taught me.
MOON :The moon appears to wax and wane (full moon, half moon, new moon).
Do you see a half moon sometimes? Is the moon just one half or is it the light from only half of the moon that you see?
I learnt that the six objects of sense (smell, hearing, tasting, touch, sight, mind) are of the body and not of the Atman (Soul). to be continued………
This went on for some time. One day Dattaasked, “Eh, why are you hanging on to me?”
It is not the moon that waxes and wanes only the lustre (light) of the moon.

King Yadu asked Lord Datta, “How do you remain unaffected, happy and calm? Why do you
always seems to be floating in bliss? What has made this state of mind possible?”
Lord Datta replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little knowledge from a
number of gurus (teachers). I have 24 such gurus.
Listen carefully! I will tell you what I have learnt from them.”
The Air :I learnt non-attachment and stainlessness from the Air.
The air in the body mixes with food but remains withoutdesiring any pleasure. In the same way I should take food only with a view to -obtaining knowledge and not chase after sense pleasures.
To obtain knowledge a body is needed, food is necessary for the body to live.
So limited amounts of food should be eaten for life and to obtain knowledge.
In addition, I learnt that the outside air comes in contact with many things, possessing many qualities, such as heat and cold. Yet the air is not soiled.
In the same way, I should remain unattached even when I come into contact with sense objects..

Lord Datta interrupted, “Indra, why should anything be hidden from you? I have obtained some power by Yoga, but what use can it be?
Intense penance is needed to accomplish certain works. How can I find time for such penance when I am enjoying the company of this woman and enjoying wine and food?”
Indra replied, “Lord, you are the world teacher.
Neither righteousness or unrighteousness touches you.
You are ever shining with the light of wisdom.
Why are you trying to deceive us?”
Catching hold of me who is in the snares of a woman and floating in wine, you are now foolishly asking for my help to conquer that giant!
In the past someone said that he could cross the river Ganga by holding on to a dog’s tail. Your conduct seems to be the same.”
You must learn to control this bad tendency. It is difficult to change the tendencies because you were born with these qualities. They came from actions you did in several previous births.
How can these bad qualities be removed? The Law of Action says that these tendencies came through Actions so can be removed only through Action. Just as one key opens a door and closes the same door by turning the key in the opposite direction. The bad tendencies came through bad actions.
Good actions alone can bring the change.
If you perform Good actions then the tendencies will change from selfish, moody and evil to good and pure actions.
Always practice satvic or good actions. If you cannot, at least let your actions be rajasik but with good feelings. Never practice Tamasik actions (filled with hatred).
Also the action should be performed with the thought that all the results should be for God. You will then shine and be brilliant with the light of these good qualities.
This is why you must :
DO POOJASSAY PRAYERSCHANT MANTRAS
READ HOLY BOOKS
SING BHAJANS OR HYMNS
DO YOGA MEDITATION
PERFORM GOOD ACTIONS
When all your thoughts, actions and speech are pure then you are a gift (Datta).
Until then Datta himself will help you transform your qualities by keeping you in his heart and helping you with your practices.

Swamiji explains about Dattaduring Datta Jayanti
(birthday celebration of Lord Dattatreya)
Datta means Gift.
The devotee gifts himself to Datta. Datta gifts himself to the devotee.
What does this mean? It means that the devotee has surrendered or gifted his body, sense organs and mind to Datta. Datta in turn gives off himself to the devotee.
There are three qualities that you have and these are a pure heart (Satvik), egoistic nature (Rajasik – moody, selfish quality) and a demonic nature (Tamasik – hatred, jealousy).
Which quality do you have most of the times? Most of the time our feelings are good but our actions are not good (Tamasik).
Do you like to share with others? Sharing is a satvic or good action. Do you work with your classmates to solve problems or do projects?
Do you think good things of others but sometimes behave badly when you are with them. The action is then demonic (tamasik). Speaking ill of others is tamasik.
Sometimes even feelings are bad in addition to the actions. Being jealous if someone gets praise or has something that you want is an example.
Can you think of other good and bad actions and feelings?
Do you think and speak well of your family and others? If you do then that is a pure hearted nature.

When they came Lord Dattatreya was in the guise of a drunkard making merry in the company of Anagha Devi. When those sinful souls saw Anagha Devi they became giddy. She was a rare and enchanting beauty and was half naked at the time. She was also tipsy from drinking so much wine.
The demons entirely forgot that there was a war to fight and that half naked beggar Datta was in their opinion not even worthy of consideration as a human being. They dragged Dattatreya and pushed him aside.
The battle began but before long the devatas lost their strength and began to flee.
Jambhaasura came out roaring in anger, “I will destroy every last one of you!”
Indra had acquired great strength in the service of Lord Datta. He returned to Heaven with the devatas and challenged Jambhaasura to a fight.
The demons began to chase them saying they would not stop until the last one was destroyed.

While Lord Datta was speaking to the devatas a quarrel broke out amongst the demons. Everyone was arguing that he alone should be near the damsel, he alone should carry her and he alone should carry the palanquin. This ended in a loud quarrel.
Thus by the Grace of Dattatreya, the devatas were able to regain their kingdom of Heaven.
For Lord Dattatreya the protection of Indra was not a great feat.
The devatas encouraged by Lord Dattatreya started to fight with great vigour and killed all the demons. Anagha Devijumped out of the palanquin and joined Lord Dattatreya.
