From the President’s desk….

Greetings community members:

The time has arrived for our Society to share our winter inspirations with you. It has been a busy time and hope you all are able to take a look at our exhibit for the 1930’s in our museum room. As your President I had the wonderful opportunity of presenting the early history of Plain to the fourth and fifth graders at the Plain Elementary School. We covered the early 1800’s thru the 1918 cyclone. Thanks to the families that donated the Indian baskets and their historical documentation the children were able to have several hands on exhibits. The Indian history of our community and surrounding areas proved most interesting to the students. Those of you that experienced the cyclone and have shared that with us may be sure we are busy passing it on to our community youngsters. We are still looking for persons of community interest and importance, for our lower level gallery. The Pat Walsh family has joined us with some very interesting family history data. Your Historical Society has acquired Past Perfect software for Researching, Reporting and Cataloging Collections. If you are looking for some interesting and stimulating hours to fill your free time, the society would love to have you on board. Have a very cool, relaxing, and historical summer.

Until next time…… Mary Frances Nachreiner email: [email protected]

“A morsel of genuine history is a thing so rare as to be always valuable.”

~Thomas Jefferson, September 8, 1817

On the following page we would like to share several of the thank you cards sent to

President, Mary Frances (Bettinger) Nachreiner, for her recent history presentation to the

4th & 5th graders at the Plain Elementary School. Mary Frances also read sections from

the “Genealogy Of The Bettinger Family.” Note that the 1st student picked up on

Elizabeth Bettinger living to be 100 years old. Elizabeth was actually Mary Frances’s

grandmother. The 1918 cyclone seemed to be another event that struck the children’s

memories. It is amazing that these students remembered so much from the

presentation.

Recent donations to our society include:1) Barbara Ann Schutz has donated a copy of her book, “The Descendants of Michael and

Anna Catherine Schutz.” to our historical society. 2) Bonita (Laubmeier) Albrecht donated the Marriage Certificate of her grandparents

Rudolph Feiner & Mary Ederer and two unidentified portraits. The portraits belonged to her grandmother.

3) A large rag rug 10ft. x 11ft. donated by Sharon Mary Schillinger Mazaheri. The rug belonged to her grandparents Alois & Katherine (Bindl) Hutter. Sharon & her husband, Mort, have recently moved from North Dakota to Arizona.

4) Dr. Fowler’s medical instruments donated by Richard & Mary Frances Nachreiner. 5) JoAnn Schanke donated a pair of vases. Given to JoAnn by her Godmother Frances

Bindl. (Herman Bindl’s wife). Frances received them from mother-in-law. Frances thought they probably were sold at the church picnic for the parish after the tornado in 1918. JoAnn Schanke also donated a jar of glass from the 1918 cyclone. The glass was found when they built the house at 1600 St. Luke Ave., now owned by Alois Bindl. The stained glass windows were large, thus lots of glass!

6) A picture of the village of Plain before Westbrook was built, donated by The Peoples Community Bank, Plain, WI.

7) Numerous items donated by Rita T. Kaiser in honor of Sylvester & Laura Nachreiner.

• Rose Reuschlein’s braided rug

• Graduation gift of Sacred Heart of Jesus & Mary given by Sr. Demetria to Laura Nachreiner.

• Blessed Mother (holy water fount) given by Clara Beck to Alma McCarville.

• Curling iron heated on wood stove to curl hair.

• Papers & material from 1776 to 1996 prepared by Laura Nachreiner.

• 2-piece cross used on casket of Clarence Herbert infant son of Sylvester & Laura Nachreiner

• Thermometer that perhaps belonged to Rita’s grandpa Joseph Bandel, doctor during the Civil War.

The above donations are just a small listing of the items that have been donated in the past year. We apologize if we have missed your donation. Please remind us & it will be listed in our next newsletter.

One of our members, Dorie Danelski, has spent the last couple of years working on 3 family histories. The books are printed on acid-free paper, and have a sturdy plastic ring binding. If you are interested in any of these, phone Doris Danelski, (541) 686-2155, or write to 2425 S. Louis Lane, Eugene, Oregon 97405; E-Mail: [email protected] The Hehenberger - Hemberger and Egger Family - $32.00 (3 copies remaining for sale) The earliest know ancestors of this family are Georg and Sarah Hehenberger of Scharten, Austria. Their son, Michael Hehenberger, emigrated to the USA in 1852. Michael married Marie Egger, an immigrant from Aarwangen, Switzerland, who arrived in 1852. Both Michael and Marie were previously married. Michael brought a son, John Hehenberger (age 3), with him to America. The Hutter, Engel & Born Families - $49.00 (10 copies remaining) Volume I The HUTTER family emigrated to the USA between the years 1855 to 1867 from two villages in Bavaria, Hochabrunn and Ast, Germany. They did not all emigrate together. The earliest to arrive was Johann Evangelist Hutter with his 2nd wife, Maria (Barbara) Bindl. Johann Evangelist’s first wife, Eva Margaretha Malterer, died in 1842. Volume 2 ENGEL & BORN FAMILY: The second volume concerns the descendants of Anna Born of Twann, Canton Bern, Switzerland. She was married twice. With her first husband, Daniel Engel, she had 3 daughters; Mary Ann who married Solomon Cramer of Plain, Wisconsin; Rosina, who married Johann Baptist Hutter; and Caroline, who married twice – first to Lorenzo Bow Needham and then to Georg Hutter. After the death of Daniel Engel in Switzerland, Anna Born emigrated to the USA in 1844 with her three Engel daughters, where she married her cousin, John Ulli Born. John and Anna Born had four daughters, three of whom married: Mary Martha Born wed Heinrich Luther; Elizabeth wed George Claridge; and Margaret married Frederick Schoenmann. Names that are prominent in the Hutter book are: Hutter, Nachreiner, Claridge, Cramer, Bauer, Ruhland, Thering, Meixelsperger, Schoenmann, Aron, Bettinger, Brechtl, Neuheisel, Reuschlein and Hehenberger–Hemberger. The Reuschlein & Thering Family - $40.00 The history of the Reuschlein family was published in 2006, as a 2-volume set. Seven copies of this genealogy and history are still available for sale. The family of Heinrich Josef Reuschlein emigrated to America from Baden-Württemberg, Germany in 1852. They settled first in Burlington, Wisconsin; but then the family moved to Plain, Wisconsin except for two brothers who married and stayed in Burlington. Heinrich Josef had five children; but only Theresia, Maria Eva, and Sebastian had descendants who survived more than one generation.
