Visit and Meeting with the State Leader of the Opposition, The Hon. Matthew Guy MP at Donvale

The State Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy MP visited our Diocese Headquarters in Donvale on Tuesday 15 December, 2015. This was an appropriate time to thank Mr. Guy for his support and approval of Eporo Tower when he was then Minister of Planning.

This was a fruitful meeting and a great opportunity to inform Mr. Guy about the work and plans of the diocese and to hear from him his opinion on many issues such as the East-West Link, education, gambling, substance abuse. Some other issues that were discussed were: recent legislative changes that ban religious instruction in public schools, climate change, and the vision for Melbourne's CBD and beyond.

His Grace Bishop Suriel presented Mr. Guy with a Coptic icon of the Theotokos which was very much appreciated by him.

We thank the Leader of the Opposition for his visit and for taking the time to listen to our concerns for our community and for Victoria.

في التاريخ إلى األبد.

نحن ال نستطيع أن نوفيك الشكر لهذه الرؤية وللنتائج التي أنجزتها.

Speech of His Grace Bishop Suriel in Honour of Fr. Tadros Sharobeam End of Year Luncheon - St Mary Coptic Orthodox College

Friday 18th December 2015

St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College was founded in 1991 as a primary school, with 51 pupils in rented premises in 256 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, of blessed memory, officially opened the College on 23rd February 1991 during his pastoral visit to Melbourne.

Also in the same year, when I was beginning my monastic journey, and I heard about the opening of the first Coptic college in the lands of immigration, and although I did not have a personal relationship with Fr Tadros Sharobeam or the Coptic community in Melbourne, I sent a cheque for $5000 to the college as a donation. I did this as I dearly value education, and even back then, I wanted to see our Coptic identity maintained, and believed that this was one way to do it, through Coptic education.

Then in 1994, the first Year 7 students began and we have added a new year level each year since then until we were a P-12 College. In the same year the college moved to our present site in Coolaroo, which was refurbished in 1996.

After my enthronement as Bishop of Melbourne in 1999, I fervently prayed for the continuous success of this college, I could not help but love this school and education, after all, I was a teacher previously. I will never forget the blessed last visit to the school by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III of blessed memory in 2002, and how he had supported this college in every possible way he could. His Holiness spoke highly of this college everywhere he travelled and encouraged Copts to learn from our example and to establish similar colleges in North America and Europe.

We opened our new Gymnasium and chapel in April, 2007, and our new Library/Science/Language/Support wing in 2010. In 2014, a final VRQA report stated that the college has met all the requirements for the special review conducted in 2013. Now we are expecting enrolments to reach about 800 in 2016.

We discussed and planned how to alleviate and support the many responsibilities that Fr. Tadros carried over the years, and how to effectively change the structure at the college. So in 2014, a new accountant, Matthew Simon, was employed to help facilitate our financial capabilities. Also in the last term of 2015, the newly appointed principal, Matthew Ivulich, began his mission to take the college to new heights.

As you can see, the achievements over the last 25 years are extensive. This is due to the efforts of the Very Rev. Fr. Tadros Sharobeam.

We are indebted to this amazing effort that Fr Tadros has put into this college, and we understand what great lengths you have gone to, to bring this fine college to where it is today. Your dedication is exemplary, and your legacy as a pioneer in setting up the first Coptic College in the lands of immigration will live on, and will be marked in history forever.

We cannot thank you enough for this vision and the results that you have achieved.

So on behalf of The Board of Governors of St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College, on behalf of the principal, its teachers, staff, parents and students, we congratulate Father Tadros Sharobeam on his dedicated service to our community over the last 25 years as the College’s Founder and College Director. He has built an excellent foundation for its future.

With the commencement of the College’s new Principal, Matthew Ivulich, we are all excited about the college’s next 25 years and beyond. This new era will be served by a new leadership structure. The position of director will formally cease as of today, as Fr Tadros Sharobeam has requested to retire from this position. The title of director will no longer be used, and this is to acknowledge and honour Fr. Tadros being the only director in the history of this college. The position of principal will assume the responsibilities of the previous position of director. Fr. Tadros was fully involved and participated in the new structure process and the appointment of the new principal. The Board of Governors also wished to make this announcement in early November before my travel to Egypt, but Fr. Tadros requested that this be delayed till after the VCE exams. The Board of Governors would like to assure the college community and our Coptic congregation at large, that the link between our church and the college is vital. This is why we support, within this new structure, the position of a College Chaplain. The College Chaplain has been appointed and that will be Father Angelos Rofail, our parish priest from Archangel Michael and St Anthony Parish in Oakleigh, who is with us presented here today. Many other clergy will also support Fr. Angelos’ work on a regular basis. The Board of Governors including myself have also dedicated half a day on Friday’s to be at the college to meet with the principal, teachers, staff, students and parents. This school belongs to all of us in the diocese, and each one of us has a duty of care, and we need to commit to its growth and expansion. The contribution to the college of Father Tadros Sharobeam will always be embedded in its history. The Board has commemorated this achievement by the placement of a plaque at the college, which will be officially unveiled shortly. In honour of Fr. Tadros, the award to the Dux of the college, commencing in 2016, will be known as the “Father Tadros Sharobeam Medal.” In my appreciation to what Fr Tadros Sharobeam had accomplished over a quarter of a century, I had nominated him for the OAM award, but out of his humility, he declined to receive this award after it was approved in November 2014, even though all the process had been finalized. We congratulate Father Tadros Sharobeam again on his wonderful contribution to so many individuals and families. On behalf of the Board and all of you, I would like to present Fr Tadros Sharobeam with a gift as a token, to thank him for all his hard work, long hours that he laboured, and his unwavering dedication. May the Lord Jesus Christ reward you thirty, sixty and one hundred fold for your love and toil. Glory be to God forever. Amen.

واوضح قداسته سبب كتابة هذا األصحاح قائال إن مدينة كورنثوس تشبه كثير مدينة االسكندرية وأنها كانت

مليئة آنذاك بالمواهب الروحية والتعاليم الصحيحة لكنها كانت وخالية من المحبة الفتا لقول القديس بولس فى

شروط وصور 13من ذات الرسالة "وأيضا أريكم طريقا أفضل "وسرد فى األصحاح 12صحاح نهاية اال

لماذا تنقذه وأنت تعلم أنه سيلدغك؟ من إنقاذه. وكان تلميذه يراقبه فسأله

فرد الحكيم قائال "العقرب طبعه اللدغ )أي الشر والسوء( لكن طبعي اإلنقاذ )أي الخير( فال يجب أن أجعل

طبع العقرب السيئ ينتصر على طبعي أو يغيره.

ته مؤشر على سالم اإلنجيل يعلمنا اإليمان العامل والملئ بالمحبة فأحد صور سالمة اإليمان هى المحبة وهى

وقوته.

في مجال الغذاء: "إن أطعمت كل أموالي ولكن ليس لي محبة فلست شيئا" ليس المهم فيما تقدمه وإنما -4

فى كيفية تقديمه، فهل تقدمه سعيا وراء المديح أو من باب الشعور بالتقصير؟ سواء قدمت القليل أو الكثير

ة هي المحبة فيما تق دم. ليست هذه هي القضية أمام المسيح، القضي

فى مجال الخدمة والمجتمع: "إن سلمت جسدي حتى احترق ولكن ليس لي محبة فال أنتفع شيئا" أحيانا -5

تجد إنسانا فى منتهى النشاط ومجتهد فى عمله لكنه يؤديه بدون محبة فيصبح عمله كال شئ.

لكي ما تتجدد روح المحبة في قلبك.أحب أن تضع هذه الشروط الخمسة أمامك كنموذج في حياتك

يعطينا مسيحنا أن تكون المحبة هى فكرنا وعملنا وكل ما يشغلنا في حياتنا اليومية وكل ما تمتد إليه أيدينا.
